"The release of the FDA health claim is important because it says that eating a regular portion of tree nuts, such as pistachios, may likely lead to the prevention of heart disease in the future. As a cardiologist, I've been telling patients for years what they can't eat. So, it's nice to give them a choice of something that's crunchy and satisfying like pistachios." The reason for this book is to provide reference material for an individual who is planning or cooking a meal for six to ten people. For larger groups, most of the recipes can be easily doubled or tripled and two or more dutch ovens may be needed. Most of the information has been targeted toward the first time dutch oven user, although, the more experienced cook may find a tidbit or two here and there. I hope this book will intice all of you potential dutch oven cooks to "give 'er a try" and you will see why I call them "man's best friend". John W. Lyver, IV

    Tempo Run
This did not go entirely to plan. This past week has been wet, rainy and damp. That means that the trail is slippery. Today started out well, we did a two mile warmup run and then our drills, then headed out for a nice tempo run. This time, the idea was to accellerate each mile until we reached an 80% effort for the last one, keeping good form throughout. I headed off too fast as usual, but was then able to slow it down and concentrate on my breathing, my arms, my stride, and my not tripping and falling over any of the little rivulets that had formed in the gravel of the trail. It has been very wet here. Did the first mile in about 9:00, the second in 8:45, right on target (times from memory - my watch is in the car). I really started to pick it up on mile three, and got about a quarter of a mile through it when I slipped on a patch of wet, muddy gravel. Twisted my ankle.

General Safety Around the Kitchen Probably the two most dangerous things around the kitchen are: Knives and Other Sharp Edges , and Fires and Other Hot Things. Both of these have their own pages. Here we will try to cover the rest of kitchen safety. First Aid There can always be a mistake, and someone in the kitchen, preferably you, should be trained in at least basic first aid. Contact the American Red Cross for a class or two, it is one of the most valuable things you can do for you and your friends. Food Poisoning, Spoilage and Temperature Control Keep foods either hot or cold. The bacteria that cause spoilage and food poisoning grow best when food is luke warm. Be especially careful with raw poultry, seafood and foods with a base of eggs, such as mayonnaise or egg salad, or bread, like stuffings or puddings.
    • Make sure the temperature in your refrigerator is 40 degrees or under. Get a good thermometer for the fridge, keep it in there where you can see it, and check it often.

    79. HIC Homepage
A small group which gets together to talk about their homemade wines. Site includes recipes for various alcoholic beverages, as well as general tips and links.
    http://www.harvington.org.uk/hic/
Welcome to the HIC website. HIC is made up of a small group of friends who get together annually (or whenever there is a good evening on at the local pub!) and talk about their home-made wines. We live in a small village in the Vale of Evesham surrounded by Plum, Damson, Pear and Apple orchards and market gardening farms. Local farm shops sell much of this produce cheaply and at a much better quality than the supermarkets. The fertile soil of the Vale also means that the hedgerows are rich providers of Blackberries, Rose hips, Nettles and other good wine ingredients. It would seem a terrible waste if we didn't try our best to turn as much of this, cheap or free stuff into wine. Once a year - or more if we feel like it - we get together to test taste each other's home brewing efforts and there is a small cup awarded to the most drinkable. This is, of course, the much coveted HIC Cup! (Yes folks - its a joke!) So the lofty aim of this little dedicated (mostly) band of liver-abusers is the pursuit of "Cheap, tasty booze"! On this site we hope to share with you our tried and tested recipes and tips for home-winemaking. This is a British site - so any weights and measures will be Metric or Imperial - or downright odd as the recipes came from Granny's Granny on the back of an envelope and no one dares alter them as then they may not work!
