Ronald Reagan At the end of his two terms in office, Ronald Reagan viewed with satisfaction the achievements of his innovative program known as the Reagan Revolution, which aimed to reinvigorate the American people and reduce their reliance upon Government. He felt he had fulfilled his campaign pledge of 1980 to restore "the great, confident roar of American progress and growth and optimism." On February 6, 1911, Ronald Wilson Reagan was born to Nelle and John Reagan in Tampico, Illinois. He attended high school in nearby Dixon and then worked his way through Eureka College. There, he studied economics and sociology, played on the football team, and acted in school plays. Upon graduation, he became a radio sports announcer. A screen test in 1937 won him a contract in Hollywood. During the next two decades he appeared in 53 films. From his first marriage to actress Jane Wyman, he had two children, Maureen and Michael. Maureen passed away in 2001. In 1952 he married Nancy Davis, who was also an actress, and they had two children, Patricia Ann and Ronald Prescott.

Eisenhower and Richard M. Nixon. After joining the Republican party in 1962 he began to champion conservative causes and enthusiastically endorsed presidential candidate Barry Goldwater Ford , respectively. Four years later he won the 1980 nomination and, with his running mate, George H. W. Bush , resoundingly defeated incumbent President Jimmy Carter Reagan's presidency had barely begun when he was shot by a would-be assassin, John Hinckley, Jr., on Mar. 30, 1981; he recovered completely and quickly. Advocating a balanced budget to combat inflation, he reversed long-standing political trends by successfully pursuing his supply-side economic program of tax and non-defense budget cuts through Congress. Adopting a hardline stance against the Soviet Union and other Communist countries, Reagan advocated and oversaw the largest peacetime escalation of military spending in American history; in 1983 he proposed the controversial and expensive space-based defense system known as the

Ronald Reagan (1911- ), 40th President of the United States, at 69, the oldest man ever elected to the office. A gifted speaker, his previous career in the entertainment business spanned 30 years. Ronald Wilson Reagan was born on February 6, 1911, in Tampico, Illinois, the second of two sons, to John (Jack) Edward Reagan, a shoe salesman, and Nelle Wilson Reagan, a homemaker, who sometimes worked in a dress shop. The family was poor and moved from town to town while Jack searched for work. Nelle's interest in the theater, and her involvement in amateur productions, early influenced Ronald. Beginning at age 14, the boy held part-time jobs, including those of construction laborer and summer lifeguard. In high school he showed ability in sports, drama, and politics. At Eureka College, Ronald supported himself with a small football scholarship, savings from his part-time employment, and wages as a fraternity house dishwasher. He majored in economics and sociology, was a varsity guard on the football team, captained the swimming team, performed leading roles in college plays, and became president of the student body. After graduating from college in 1932, Reagan became a sports announcer for radio station WOC in Davenport, Iowa. The next year he was transferred to an affiliated station, WHO, in Des Moines, where he worked until 1937, also writing a newspaper sports column. While traveling to southern California to report on the spring training season of the Chicago Cubs baseball team, he took a screen test for the Warner Brothers studio. They signed him to an acting contract, and in his first film role

Everybody knew he was a dumbass. Ronald Reagan was famous for not understanding how government works and not particularly caring about it. His job was to read speeches off the Teleprompter, shake hands with foreign dignitaries, pose for pictures, and maybe go out and visit a flag factory or a steel mill every once in a while. Otherwise he was busy sleeping in, eating jellybeans, and watching television. Even so, Reagan got deferential treatment from the press, so the news coverage almost always cast him in the best possible light. He was extremely comfortable in front of the cameras, as you would expect after all, he had been a movie star prior to becoming a politician. And he could be disarmingly affable. He often shared jokes and anecdotes and brilliantly-scripted one-liners that sounded spontaneous. But none of that explains why the journalists decided to take it easy on him. The reason Reagan got a free ride in the media stemmed from his fortuitously-timed assassination attempt.
