How to read the future in financial reports
Look beyond short-term earnings to find out how healthy a company is, accountant advises
By Fielding Buck
FACSNET Associate Editor
Posted March 2002 When reporters try to gauge the financial health of a company, they focus on short-term earnings, according to accounting expert Baruch Lev . But if journalists learn to ask questions about "intangibles" such as patents and people, they can better cover businesses in their communities. Lev, a business professor at New York University, testified on corporate reporting in February at congressional hearings on the collapse of energy trading giant Enron. The concepts he presented to lawmakers are the same ones he recommends reporters use in finding their way through the post-Enron world. "In the new environment, what you want to know is really the substance of things," he said. "You want to know what are the innovation activities of the companies." [Back to top]
Comprehensive disclosure
In his report to Congress, Lev said that traditional accounting looks at past transactions, such as sales and borrowing, and focuses on physical and financial assets, resulting in narrowly based corporate reports that don't provide investors and policy-makers the information they seek. Such reports ignore or misreport information such as:

RSS may be to the Web what TiVo was to TV. J.D. Lasica reviews the latest tools. J.D. Lasica
Posted: 2004-05-05 These days it's not easy being an infowarrior. As the number of blogs and niche news sites continue to soar, how do you keep on top of everything? While most Netizens still surf to Web sites to catch the latest postings, more users have found that to be a laborious, time-consuming way to browse. Instead they are installing "newsreader" software that constantly plucks feeds from Weblogs and news outlets and pulls them together onto a single screen. That, in a nutshell, is RSS (short for Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication). It's a Web tool that lets you create a personalized news experience by building an ad hoc online network of friends, experts and news sources. Minutes after they post a new story or blog entry, it arrives on your screen as a headline and short summary or in its entirety. Call it " news that comes to you After a couple of hours of subscribing to favorite feeds, your news grazing habits will be changed forever. Just as TiVo lets you watch TV more efficiently, RSS readers do the same by letting you scan your favorite blogs and news sites faster or letting you cast your net over a wider range of material.

Will RSS Readers Clog the Web?
By Ryan Singel Also by this reporter Page 1 of 2 next
02:00 AM Apr. 30, 2004 PT News aggregators may be the best new tools to appear on the Web since the browser, but as the programs and the underlying RSS standard grow more popular, some question whether the Internet will be able to handle the traffic. Aggregators, sometimes called newsreaders or RSS readers, are a hybrid of a Web browser and an e-mail program, allowing Web users to peruse hundreds of information sources, from Boston-based restaurant job listings to Taiwanese political blogs. The beauty of an aggregator is that it displays articles from hundreds of websites in one place, so the user doesn't have to pull up the sites individually. Assessment in Your Classroom
Informal Reading and Writing Assessment Ideas
From Brenda Weaver There are numerous formal tests that can be used to assess these four areas but it would take many hours to assess and you would be left with perhaps a single score which told you whether the student was average or not. In order to make instruction more effective and to increase student learning, informal measures are best because they are more time efficient and the results are specific as to what you need to teach. Here are some examples that you might want to try. Assessment Ideas for Grades K-2:
Print Conventions: Use unfamiliar books and orally ask students to identify formats or punctuation. Ask them to follow as you read to look for voice-to-print match, etc. Word Recognition: For use of cueing strategies take a running record ( sample record ) to see how the student applies the strategies. Have the student read phonetically correct nonsense words to determine the student's ability to apply phonic generalizations.

by Guido Flohr - Friday, June 11th 2004 11:17 PDT About: libintl-perl is a library that supports message translation for Perl, written in pure Perl (version 5.004 or better). A faster C version is also built and installed if the system fulfills all requirements. Its interface is very similar to the gettext family of functions in C, and it uses the same file formats as GNU gettext, making it possible to use all tools available for gettext itself and to seamlessly integrate internationalized Perl code into mixed-language projects. An alternative library with a similar purpose is available as Locale::MakeText. Changes: This release fixes some minor bugs and warnings and enhances the documentation.

The internet has long been valued by teachers and librarians as a powerful research and communications tool, and in the last 10 years, it has brought about a sea change in the way students find, manage, and use information. But the promise of the Web as more than just a readable, searchable resource has been slow to be realized ... until now. Two new Internet technologies, Weblogs and RSS (Real Simple Syndication), are redefining the way students and teachers use the Internet, turning them from mere readers into writers to the Web as well, and making it easier to filter and track the ever-growing number of resources coming online each day. In fast-growing numbers, educators across the country and throughout the world are finding just how powerful this new interactive Internet can be. Weblogs, or "blogs," as they are called, can best be defined as Web sites that are easily created and updated by those with even a minimum of technology know-how. What used to be a messy process for Internet publishing is now almost as easy as sending e-mail; no code, no file transfer, and in many cases, no hosting setup. Just login to your site from any Internet connection, enter the content in a typical Internet form, press a button, and your Weblog is updated. And it's not just text. Blogs can display pictures and video, include audio and Flash, and even store other files like PowerPoint presentations or Excel spreadsheets for linking.

Press Release Description Although the ocean-and the resources within-seem limitless, there is clear evidence that human impacts such as overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution disrupt marine ecosystems and threaten the long-term productivity of the seas. Declining yields in many fisheries and decay of treasured marine habitats, such as coral reefs, has heightened interest in establishing a comprehensive system of marine protected areas (MPAs)-areas designated for special protection to enhance the management of marine resources. Therefore, there is an urgent need to evaluate how MPAs can be employed in the United States and internationally as tools to support specific conservation needs of marine and coastal waters.

Introduction
This is a collection of pointers to information, and where possible, to demonstration versions of alternative browsing methods. People with disabilities, whether temporary such as a slow connection or eyes "disabled" by having to watch traffic or permanent such as hearing, visual, physical or cognitive impairment use a wide range of alternative approaches, different from traditional mouse-and-screen-based browsers. People with visual impairment or reading difficulties rely on speech output, Braille displays or screen magnification; and in many cases use the keyboard instead of the mouse. People who can't use a keyboard rely either on voice recognition for spoken commands, or on switch devices which can be controlled by head, mouth or eye movements. People whose eyes are busy with another task may need Web access using voice-driven systems. This page is intended to give you background and pointers to solutions for these scenarios. The purpose of this collection is to reflect the whole range of approaches used for browsing. If you design Web pages, then this will allow you to try out a particular browsing method with specific sites as a way of checking how usable they are for a given browser, or combination of browser and screen-reader, voice-recognition, or other adaptive systems. If you are a user who may be interested in finding the most effective method for you, then you should also find useful information here.
