It can serve as a "face-lift" to projects that have grown somewhat removed from their original design. It can give project staff an opportunity to listen and reacquaint themselves with their target population. Participants in a project are often happy to hear an evaluation is being conducted because it can give them an opportunity to provide their feedback.

Web Browsers
This site has been designed with Frames, which we have sought to use intelligently to make navigation around the site as simple as possible. We are aware that Frames are controversial from an HCI perspective, but believe that most IJHCS readers are by now 'Web/Frames literate', and that the advantages outweigh the small initial learning costs. Printing Adobe Acrobat documents
The HTML version has been designed for online browsing, not printing. All articles are available in their final print form, supplied by Academic Press . These are in Adobe Acrobat's Portable Document Format (PDF), which requires the Acrobat Reader, freely available for MacOS, Windows and Unix. Choose and download a version
Commenting on articles
This environment uses the HyperNews system (developed by Daniel LaLiberte at NCSA) to enable readers to easily critique and discuss articles. Comment on the article in general, on specific sections, or on other readers' comments. Contributions can be named or anonymous, and can be tagged as "Agree" or "Disagree". Furthermore, you can add your own links to comments so that a range of 'secondary resources' relevant to the article is built up (URLs typed in will be automatically activated). You do not require any special tools to use HyperNews apart from a Web browser which recognises Forms.

Interop among blogging/blog reading tools?
Hey, you, Gnome Blog guys. And people working on any other similar tool that might potentially run on the same desktop as Straw. And Mikael too, if you really are wasting your time with that silly BLAM! thing ;-) I'm not interested in expanding Straw's scope to cover blog authoring, but apparently there are people who, like, comment on other people's articles, and maybe we should try to make their lives a bit easier. I don't know if Straw-BLAM! interoperability is really needed beyond OPML import/export, but it couldn't hurt, I guess. So: Should it be possible to drag feeds between aggregators? Drag articles from aggregators to authoring tools for easier commenting? Stuff like that? Yes, I think it should. Might even be good to be able to do it without dragging, who knows. Does someone want to share his thoughts about this or should I just go ahead (any month now) and implement something in Straw and wait for others to follow? archived RSS

Development of reading tools and programming for various TOU meters Investigators:: Kasam Siriratchuwong, Dr.Pichit Rerkshanandana, Dr.Djitt Laowattana, and Theera Yaemglin Recently, regional electricity demands are highly increasing and continuously expanding in every sector of the Kingdom of Thailand. As a result, regional consumers have different profiles in electrical demand. The Provincial Electricity Authority [PEA] has changed a method of charging rate from TOD (Time of Day) to TOU (Time of Use). Accordingly, the collecting processes: such as recording and adjusting factors of charging rate is indeed too difficult to get carried out. In addition, the new types of electric meters have been changed for solving this inefficiency and making it easy to process. Infrared recording meter is also used to reduce this burden. Electric rates are read by infrared recording heads, from electric meter to computer as shown in Figure 1. Amount of electric usage data is transmitted via serial communicating line and calculated for billing. At present, the different types of electric meters are one of the biggest problem. The specifications in each product are different and incompatible to each other. A recording operator needs to carry all types of infrared reading recorders to measure which is cumbersome. Insufficient equipment using in this work also leads to time delay and human error.

Arkenstone, Inc. was founded in 1989 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing reading tools for people with disabilities. For over a decade, it delivered these tools to over 35,000 individuals in 60 countries. In 2000, Arkenstone business operations were sold to Freedom Scientific , which now sells three products originally developed by Arkenstone: OpenBook scanning/reading software for people who are blind and low vision, WYNN scanning/reading software for people with reading challenges, and the integrated VERA reading machine for people who are blind and low vision.
After the sale, Arkenstone changed its name to Benetech , an innovative Silicon Valley nonprofit that uses the Arkenstone model to develop technology projects addressing major social problems in areas such as disability, human rights, literacy, education, and the digital divide. Its first two projects are the Bookshare.org

Aggregators - Blog Reading Tools
A natural progression from my foray into the world of blogging is to start using aggregators. These tools allow you to subscribe to RSS sources, (can be as simple as dragging a link into your aggregator). Most blogs and many web sites provide RSS feeds. The upside is that you can select all the blogs and sites that you are interested in and have the content delivered to your doorstep as it is posted. I am now using one web based, ( Feedster , described as the 'Google for Blogs'), and one PC based aggregator, ( SharpReader ), and the possibilities are quickly making themselves known.

WYNN is software that helps you read, study, and comprehend text more easily and effectively. WYNN is an exciting new product from Arkenstone, leading maker of software reading tools for people with visual disabilities. Used with a standard PC, WYNN lets you open a file and hear it read aloud. Or, you can scan a page using a flatbed scanner, and read that aloud. Once you open a file, you can alter the way the page is presented on the screen as well as the way it is read aloud to you. You can also insert notes and bookmarks, highlight sections, or look up words in the dictionary. You can use WYNN in the classroom or workplace. Although the software was designed with the guidance of students and adults with Specific Learning Disability and special educators, WYNN is also helpful for people who do not have a diagnosed reading disability, but find reading difficult, unpleasant, or laborious. And WYNN is a valuable tool for teachers and therapists who work with individuals with reading difficulties. If you want to read more easily and more effectively, WYNN is for you!
