At this time, there are still only a few computer programs available for learning speed reading. Most are quite limited. This program includes more features than those which only teach you how to double your reading speed. If you put in the time and hard work, Letter Chase Speed Reader will give you the know how and provide you with the practice needed to go on to advanced reading speeds. One of the best things about this program is that you can continue to use it long after you have completed the course. Letter Chase Speed Reader has two useful ways to insert your own text (reading material that you can obtain from several sources) into either of three different program sections to aid in your reading. With this program, you don't have to worry about reverting to old reading habits, you can continue to hone your skills using text obtained by copying and pasting from the internet, or loaded from text files. Future versions of Letter Chase Speed Reader will contain more stories, complete with comprehension tests. Also, you will be able to save your window sizes and positions making it more convenient.

I am reading the Speed Reading Book by Tony Buzan and I am unsure about the Meta-Guiding Technique. Can you explain it?
I can't be bothered to go through a book on speed reading, what tips can you give me that I can apply now?
ANSWERS to above questions: 1. Many people do find that their first stumbling block is the Meta-Guiding Technique(MGT) particularly if they have grasped the earlier information quickly. The Technique has many uses and I would suggest that at this stage of your speed reading career (I assume that this is the first time that you have tried improving your reading speed) you should use it to improve your "basic" reading speed. (By "basic" I mean grouping words together on each line for each eye fixation.) What do I mean?

Developing Reading Speed by Cheryl Champeau de Lopez

In 1921 Arthur Gates determined that reading comprehension and reading speed are two distinct but related factors, both of which should be included in a reading program. LaBerge and Samuels (1985) developed this idea in their model, emphasizing the importance of automaticity of certain components of the reading process. Basically, they theorize that readers who are able to identify words quickly (“automatically”) will comprehend better, since they can then devote most of their attention to comprehension, i.e., the meanings and relationships of those words. Timed readings and paced readings There are basically two types of exercises: timed readings and paced readings. In timed readings, students read at their own speed. When they have finished the text, they calculate their reading speed by dividing the number of words in the text by the time they utilized. For example, if they took seven minutes and forty-five seconds to read a 1000-word text, their speed would be: 1000/7.75 = 129 words per minute. In paced readings, the teacher controls the time allowed for the readings. In these exercises a mark is placed in the margin of the text next to the line containing each 100th word. The teacher then notifies the reader, perhaps with a tap on the desk, when his eye should be at each mark, according to the speed the teacher is pacing. For example, to pace at 200 words per minute, the tap would be every 30 seconds.

Improving Reading Speed
Activities for the Classroom
by Neil J. Anderson
To many second language readers, reading is a suffocatingly slow process; yet developing rapid reading, an essential skill for all students, is often neglected in the classroom. Data from Segalowitz, Poulsen, and Komoda (1991:15) indicate that the second language (L2) reading rates of highly bilingual readers are "30% or more slower than L1 reading rates." These data are also supported by Weber (1991), who points out that highly skilled bilinguals typically have a slower reading rate in a second language. Perkins and Pharis (1980) state that average ESL readers are well below average native English speakers in reading ability. Jensen (1986:106) indicates that "at the end of a reading course, even advanced ESL students may read only 100 words per minute or less."
Research findings on the value of rapid reading The earliest studies conducted with native English speakers indicated that rapid reading was only a skimming strategy used to cover the reading material (Brown, Inouye, Barrus, and Hansen 1981). Yet, later studies show that readers achieved not only rapid-reading skills but also better comprehension when specifically taught rapid-reading techniques (Cranney, Brown, Hansen, and Inouye 1982).

Advertisement Teach speed reading to your children even if you can’t speed read yourself by George Stancliffe
For over two years, I have had the hobby of teaching speed reading to people in the community where I live. So far I have taught over 300 people (most of them children) to speed read.
As a result of the many classes I’ve taught, I’ve made some observations:
• Children learn the speed reading skill far more easily than adults.
• Children master the skill far more completely than adults do. It literally becomes a natural part of them if they learn it by age 12 or so, just as much as speaking.
English is a natural part of them.

Ease of Use System Requirements PC Mac Price Survey Product Support Whether for school, business, or simply for pleasure, reading is a skill that is best accomplished with speed and precision. Countless adults bemoan their lack of reading efficiency, and wonder what they could achieve if only they could read and comprehend more effectively. Ultimate Speed Reader strives to help users achieve their reading goals. It does this through a series of activities that train the reader to track more effectively, improve concentration and perception, and use peripheral vision to read more words at once. Educational Value According to Ultimate Speed Reader , slower readers are often inefficient readers. They read every word, becoming so preoccupied with this endeavor that the overall idea being shared in a passage is missed. The reader soon becomes bored and begins to lose focus, often finding that s/he can’t remember what was just read with such painstaking precision. The Speed Reader method encourages the user to increase reading speed in a variety of ways. A typical training session lasts about 30 minutes, and begins with 'Reading Warm-Ups,' which are essentially limbering drills for the eyes and brain. Moving on, the user strengthens 'Eye Movement' skills by following along with highlighted text that tracks at targeted speeds, as does the 'Newspaper Reading' section which features columnar text. 'Paced Reading' includes longer reading passages at a preset pace, and 'Timed Reading' offers timed sessions so the user can monitor his or her progress. Having worked through these arduous reading tasks the user is rewarded with the 'Eye Max Game', in which s/he matches a central figure to its twin among four peripheral figures. The figures flash at ever increasing speeds, moving farther from center with each challenge level.

    Classical Speed Reading
If you have never thought about how you can increase your reading speed, you will find these tips very interesting. You can probably read at much higher rates without losing understanding. Your brain is faster than your eyes. If your're still sceptical about increasing your reading speed, consider this: If you learn the proper technique, with which you can greatly increase your reading speed, but choose to continue reading at your old speed, you will have more time to understand the text since less time is used for interpreting the symbols. It is also strange that many people say that they don't need to read faster than they do at the moment, but nobody wants to read slower than they currently do. Think about that for a while. Speed reading is not suitable for every type of written material. Text with large amounts of complex mathematical concepts or equations, for example, needs to be read many times, slowly. Written material describing a complex historical scenario likewise is simply too complicated to be understood quickly. Speed reading poetry will not improve one's appreciation of it, partly because in reading it too quickly, one loses much of the nuance of poetical metre. Speed reading tends to be a useful technique for light material such as easy-reading novels or magazine columns. Maybe it's a good idea to speed read slowly. That is, use a perfect reading technique, but don't do it as fast as you can. Using a bad technique doesn't increase the appreciation of poetry.

Do you wish to dramatically increase your reading speed?
Reading Speed is not just something you were born with. It is trainable and able to be developed just like any other faculty. Moreover, reading is to the brain as aerobic training is to the body - by increasing your reading speed you will likely find yourself with better concentration and memory, sharper thinking and analytical skills, and able to save days, weeks, or even months of time keeping up with your reading. If you are like most people then you will have a stack of unread reports or articles in your inbox or desk drawer. These regularly get moved to the unread pile of magazines and newspapers in the corner of the room, next to your book shelf full of books and textbooks, of which most have only been read to chapter 3. If this describes you then you are one of the millions of people that could benefit from learning how to read faster. Buzan's speed reading techniques have been shown to not only increase your reading speed, but to also allow better retention and comprehension of the things you read. Tony Buzan's speed reading techniques are based upon forty years research into how your eyes actually function and upon how your eyes interact with your brain. Buzan's techniques are entirely natural and more in tune with how your mind actually works that many of the 'ordinary' slow reading techniques that most people use.

Traditionally students progress through school for eleven years, college for two and then finish their time in education with three years at University. Today the process is more complex. HE does come after school and college, but not always immediately afterwards and not always in the traditional three year format. Increasingly students are returning after a break to participate in both undergraduate and postgraduate study. Throughout the 20th Century the challenge has been to increase levels of participation while maintaining standards.

Although it may seem strange, there is strong evidence to show that reading quickly also improves your understanding of the subject that you are reading. By learning the tips below, you will be able to read more in the same time and be able to remember more about what you read. There are two basic ways to read more quickly.
