Can anyone give me some advice on how to improve students' reading speeds?
Do you have any tips and teaching ideas that help improve reading speeds? What problems do your students have? Contact us Your answers Thair J. Rahman, Iraq
I think that I have the same problem. Most of my students if not all of them want to improve their reading speed but they are lacking behind. Anyhow my piece of advice for all English language teachers is to tell their students to read with their eyes before they read with their voices.
Mei, China
Students can improve their reading speed by learning speed-reading skills and doing more practice, as practice makes perfect. Speed reading skills, on the other hand, are closely connected with the students' level of grammar, vocabulary, understanding of the particular cultural background in which the reading is introduced, etc. Thus if students want to improve reading skills, they have to have learn aspects of the language that are related to reading speed. I do not know the levels of the students, but I recommend you a set of texts-College English Band 1 and 2 by Shanghai Fudan University. In them there are speed reading materials and some reading skills are in the intensive textbooks.

DYNAMIC SPEED READING SEMINAR You will double your reading speed by the end of this exciting seminar and you will increase your reading comprehension and reading pleasure! You will read more in less time! We get more printed information thrown at us in one day than our great-grandparents saw in a lifetime. (Beyond a seed catalog and a book or two, what did they have to look at and absorb?) Today, information is coming at us from all directions. Books, memos, periodicals, email, newspapers, reports, faxes, magazines, the Internet, and more leave many buried, able to wade through just a fraction of what they need to know. Do you happen to know anyone who has a stack a stuff that they haven't had time to go through? Maybe that's you. Knowledge is power. This is the Information Age. Half of what we know today, we didn't know just fifteen years ago. The amount of information has doubled just in the last fifteen years and some experts predict it will be doubling again every two years. Everyone has books on the shelf they've never read because they didn't have the time. Some even find reading a slow, laborious task because they read slowly, their mind wanders, they're often having to go back and re-read what they just read.

Reading Faster
by Ron Kurtus (revised 10 January 2001) Students often must read and comprehend a tremendous amount of material. Being able to read rapidly is an important skill that will make school work easier, as well as help you advance in your career. Most speed reading methods are based on skim reading first and in reading groups of words. It takes discipline and a mind-set to become a super reader. Questions you may have about speed reading include:
  • How important is reading fast? How is skim reading used? How do you read groups of words?
This lesson will try to answer your questions and give you some tips on how to improve your reading speed. There is a mini-quiz at the end of the lesson.

by John Bailey
John Bailey From the Editor: The following article first appeared in the Spring 2003 issue of the NFB Vigilant , the publication of the NFB of Virginia. John Bailey is first vice president of the Virginia Association to Promote the Use of Braille. John learned Braille in his later years after his vision began to fail. He has made Braille an important part of his daily routine. He writes about several successful techniques that can get people beyond the Braille reading speed plateau. Most Braille readers would love to increase our reading speed. We know of those who have mastered the techniques well enough to achieve Braille reading speeds of several hundred words a minute. Although it would be nice, it is not necessary for everyone to read Braille at lightning speed in order to use it productively. If your only use for Braille is to mark objects for easier identification or to take quick notes, lightning-fast Braille reading speed may not be important to you; however, for those who need to digest a lot of information quickly, any increase in reading speed can be very beneficial. Unfortunately, many of us have reached a plateau in increasing our Braille reading speed. Many of us have struggled to overcome a speed limit of about sixty words a minute. The truth is that surpassing the sixty-wpm barrier takes work and the honing of specific skills. By using the proven techniques outlined below in combination with daily practice, the sixty-wpm barrier can be broken.

[PHOTO/CAPTION: Susan Ford] [PHOTO/CAPTION: Ramona Walhof] Braille Reading Speed Are You Willing To Do What It Takes? by Susan Ford and Ramona Walhof From the Editor: Susan Ford and Ramona Walhof are sisters. As you will read, between them they have a broad range of reading and Braille-teaching experience. Susan now lives in Missouri and is an active and contributing Federation leader wherever she goes. Ramona, of course, is Secretary of the National Federation of the Blind and President of the NFB of Idaho. This is what they say: Many Braille readers have never been encouraged to work to achieve good speed. Slow reading is a disadvantage throughout life and causes the reader to under-use and undervalue the reading skill. But there is no need to continue forever as a slow reader. Some Braille readers develop a speed of 200 to 400 words per minute as small children. They will retain that speed with little or no effort. Braille readers who could not attain good speed as young children, however, can do so with some work, and it is certainly worth the effort. It is also desirable for teachers of blind children to encourage good Braille-reading speed. Susan Ford developed good Braille reading speed as a small child and retains it; Ramona Walhof had fair speed as a child and has had to work to improve. Our experiences in reading Braille and teaching for years have given us some ideas which may help others in achieving increased speed. Try these suggestions and talk with other good Braille readers. You should experience significant improvement.

Speed Reading The Net
Speed Reading? The first time I heard the term Speed Reading I wasn't quite sure what to think. I was really dumbfounded when I heard people were able to read at 2000 to 3000 WPM. Was it real? I wanted to find out. What follows is what I have learned from my own experience. The first thing I learned was that speed reading has been around for quite awhile. In fact some people are speed readers and do not even realize it. Evidently this is how Evelyn Wood, the quote on quote founder of speed reading found out about it. One of her instructors read through a paper of hers at amazing speed. She asked him how he did it and he said he wasn't completely sure. Evelyn's research lead to the following key points.
  • Slow readers read one word at a time
  • Speed readers read groups of words with every eye fixation
  • Speed readers tend to have higher comprehension because the mind is focused almost entirely on reading.
The concepts are pretty basic. In fact if you think about it reading one word at a time slows you down to about what you can vocalize (say out loud). This is about 250 WPM (max). The great thing about speed reading is that everyone has the ability to become a speed reader. In fact a great demonstration can be found at

BUILDING BRAILLE READING SPEED: SOME HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS
Building Braille Reading Speed: Some Helpful Suggestions
by Jerry Whittle From the Editor: For those of us who were not taught to read Braille efficiently as children or who did not become blind until adulthood, there are three Braille-reading options. We can sit around lamenting our bad luck and wishing that we could read Braille the way President Maurer does during his banquet addresses. We can learn a little Braille and use a gratefully but with some difficulty-complaining all the while about the frustration of not having Braille as a really first - rate tool of literacy. Or we can set to and work on increasing our reading speed on the theory that any increase will improve the usefulness of Braille and our competitiveness in the job market and in life. Speaking personally, I have chosen the last alternative and have been working to increase my reading speed for several years now. Perhaps that is why I found the following article both interesting and challenging. Finding the time to read 10,000 pages or more of Braille a year, as Harry Whittle recommends, sounds like a tall order to me, but I have discovered that the more one reads, the faster the words slide past under one's fingers, and I am already reading between ten and fifteen pages a day. Mr. Whittle teaches Braille as the Louisiana Center for the Blind. He certainly knows what he is talking about when he gives advice about increasing Braille reading speed. This article first appeared in the Winter, 1993 edition of the Pathfinder, the publication of the National Federation of the Blind of Louisiana. Here is what Mr. Whittle has to say:

If you can spare just 10 minutes a day over a 6 week period to read an easy paperback, you can improve your reading efficiency without a great deal of effort. Here's how: Choose a fiction or non-fiction paperback: one you've always wanted to read but just never had time to.
  • It's best to choose a book that you consider "easy reading" and one where you will be satisfied knowing only the main ideas and not all the details. You will also need 2-3 paper clips and a stop-watch or timer.
Day 1: Set your timer for 10 minutes.
  • Read as much as you can of your paperback during that time. When the timer goes, stop reading and insert a paperclip at the top of the last page you read. Then close the book and summarize out loud everything you remember reading. Put your book away until the next day.
Day 2: Count the number of pages you read on Day 1 (from the beginning of the book to the paper clip you inserted). Then, starting at the paperclip:
  • Count off the same number of pages plus one more and insert a second paper clip.

Teaching Resources CAE Reading Reading Skills ... Reading Faster
Reading Speed For many students the CAE Reading paper presents a reading challenge. If students find, during a mock exam for example, that they are having difficulties with finishing the paper then there may be a number of reasons for this. They could be applying the wrong reading skill to that section of the paper by, for example, always reading closely and not skimming or scanning where appropriate. The teacher will need to guide the students as to the appropriate strategies to be used in each part of the paper as outlined here: Reading Skills in the CAE Reading Paper Some students may feel that they are simply reading too slowly. There are about 3,000 words of text, plus the questions and then any necessary re-reading as students locate the answers to the questions. As a wide range of topics and text types is covered in this paper there is always the possibility that some will be more familiar to students than others. Most students, including the good readers, will appreciate help with their time management of this paper as not having enough time is a common worry for students. Improving reading speed, therefore, can have the direct consequence of allowing the student to deal with the tasks quicker as well as the indirect consequence of boosting their confidence as they see a measurable increase in their reading speed.

56. Increasing Your Reading Fluency
One way to increase your reading speed is to improve your fluency. This allows youreyes to make fewer fixations, which in turn increases your reading speed.
http://www.wwu.edu/depts/tutorialcenter/readingspeed.htm
Increasing your Reading Fluency
One common problem that students have with textbook reading is how long it takes to do. High-powered speed-reading is usually not appropriate for college reading. Often textbooks are dense with information and you will need to give your mind time to comprehend and make connections. One way to increase your reading speed is to improve your fluency. The most common factor that interferes with fluent reading is regression. Regression is the tendency to re-read a sentence, phrase, or passage that has already been read. Often people don’t even notice when they do it. Usually, regression is a result of a lack of concentration the first time through. The best way to control regression is to notice when you do it and make a conscious effort to increase your concentration. You can use a note-card when you read to cover what you have already read as you go along. If you go back to re-read you will have to move the note-card, which will bring the regression to your attention. Another way to improve your fluency is to reduce word-by-word reading. Try to look at phrases instead of individual words. This allows your eyes to make fewer fixations, which in turn increases your reading speed. Reading in phrases will also make it easier to determine the author’s meaning.

Double Your Reading Speed Now!
Do you read fast enough? Do you need an edge to satisfy the reading demands this "Information Age" has placed upon most of us? Would it help you to double your reading speed right now? One of my favorite tricks when I was teaching Psychology of Learning to graduate students was to offer them "Dr. Clarke's Two-Minute Course in Speed-Reading." I'd give them a timed reading test before, tell them the first technique I'm about to tell you. Then I'd time them while they first practiced the technique. Everyone improved their time immediately while learning the technique. You will, too.
O.K., here's the secret of how to double your reading speed, right now, quick and dirty.
First, if you are reading this on the web page, stop and take a moment to save the page as text. Offline, print this article in hard copy. Then, grab a standard size bookmark (most are 8" x 2" or 6" x 1 1/2") or fold a sheet of paper to that size. Now, while reading the rest of this article (and from now on, everything else you read) place the bookmark lengthwise across the page with the lower edge immediately above the line of text you are currently reading. As you finish reading a line, pull the bookmark down to cover that line.

Speed reading. A measurement of reading speed is meaningful only when combinedwith information on how much of the text was understood by the reader.

Speed reading
Speed reading is the skill of reading and comprehending text at a high rate. On the average, a person with a college-level education reads at around 300 words per minute, assuming that the material is not of a technical nature. On the other hand the fastest readers can read more than a thousand words per minute. A measurement of reading speed is meaningful only when combined with information on how much of the text was understood by the reader. It has been found that people with higher reading speeds also have higher comprehension. Even more surprisingly, a person usually improves their comprehension as well when they improve their reading speed. There are several factors that inhibit speed reading:
  • Poor vocabulary Regression - going over the same material repeatedly. Word hopping - reading one word at a time Subvocalization - pronouncing the words in one's mind as one reads them Faulty perception - either due to faulty eye movement or slow perception time
  • Most casual readers can double or triple their reading speed by practising speed reading.

    An Introduction to Speed Reading
If you are an average reader without any knowledge of Speed Reading Techniques your reading speed is probably in the region of 200-300 words per minute. You might feel a little smug at having what appears to be quite a reasonable reading speed but before you congratulate yourself, understand that despite being the average, this is extremely slow and way below what we as human beings are capable of achieving. Speeds in excess of several thousand words per minute as a minimum are well within the capability of most readers and what prevents us from achieving these seemingly incredible levels is first of all our technique, secondly practice and thirdly and probably the most crucial factor is one of belief. Now I don't have time to deal with your beliefs but you can make some dramatic improvements in your reading speed and reading effectiveness simply by improving your basic technique ie the way you actually use your eyes and your brain to read words. Many people when asked to explain how they think the eye moves across a page of words will describe smooth jumps from one word to the next and to the next, starting at the left hand edge of a line of words travelling to the right hand extremity of that line and then starting again at the first word of the next line and so on.
