If you just hop into a strange car and race across a city you've never visited, you'll probably be in for a rough ride that doesn't get you where you want to go. The same thing is true of reading. Knowing how the brain effectively speeds the mental processing of print and knowing how to find what you want produce the best results. People have researched the behaviors of rapid readers to see how the eyes behave and how the eyes and brain work together to produce such good results. Consider the following points as you search for a way to increase your speed and efficiency. Before You Read Preview the selection you need to read to see what it is about in general and to plan how you will attack it. For example, assume your psychology assignment is to read chapter seven, pages 325 - 350. To preview you read the chapter title, the introductory paragraphs, and the section headings and subheadings. Perhaps you notice that the chapter does not have any concluding paragraphs; it just ends. You notice it is about early childhood mental development and that each section explains a different theory. No one section appears to be complex, so you can read each section at about the same rate of speed. You decide to use a hi-liter to mark names and definitions. This professor does not give chapter tests but expects you to participate in class discussion after the lecture, so you will read primarily for the main idea about each theory.

TIPS FOR IMPROVING YOUR READING SPEED The purpose of this section is to teach you how to increase you reading speed. Shortly we will be adding a section for reading BETTER as opposed to FASTER. We all have a capacity for reading much faster than we typically do. Our reading speed changes as we go through life. When we are in high school, we go through about two hundred words a minute. We get to college and, because we have to read faster due to more time constraints and a much greater amount to read, we read faster. Most people in college average about 400 words per minute. Then we get out of college, and now we don't have to read so fast. There are no longer time constraints, and we can read slow and easy. We find ourselves dropping back down to about 200 words per minute. The key to improving our speed is to SIGHT READ, and that's what we are going to show you how to do. We are going to start being pure sight readers. Obstacles get in our way, however. What do we mean by obstacles? Well, these are things that impede us from reading faster. REGRESSIONS are the most wasteful. Regressions are going back over words. You can call it back-skipping if you want. You go back over words you previously read. People do it for two reasons. Initially we read it to clarify the meaning of what we're reading. We want to be sure of the words we read as we go along. In our early years in school, when we were first taught - incorrectly - to "read slowly and carefully," it became easy to go back over words.

How To Test Your Reading Speed and Reading Comprehension
This reading speed test is designed to measure the average English reading speed in the U.S.A. which is slightly less than 200 words per minute. When you are ready, scroll down the page so that the entire test area is visible in your window. Click once on the start button and start reading. After 20 seconds a pop up window will appear and your computer will beep to indicate the end of the test. Note where you stopped reading; to the right is the number of Words Per Minute (WPM) at which you read this passage. (Please note that your reading speed on your computer screen may be slightly lower than if you were reading a book. Most people read slower on their computer screen, and for this reason even our online course requests that you print out all reading examples.) Read Instructions before testing.

"I tend to read the same line over and over again."
"I have loads of readings to do and I don't think I would ever finish them." Do these comments sound familiar to you? If yes, don't feel bad because you are reading in a foreign language. When people read in a foreign language, very often, they don't have enough confidence in their text interpretation; and therefore, they usually read more slowly than they do in their own language. After these words of comfort and reassurance, of course, you still want to improve your reading speed. Before you read on, consider the following: How fast (or how slowly) do I read? It is important to measure your reading speed before and after your practice in speed reading so that you know how much you have achieved. To do so,
  • Choose two reading passages of about the same length and the same difficulty level. (For convenience sake, choose two passages from "Practical Faster Reading" in the SAC.)

  • Reading rates
Each type of reading has a different rate;
an exciting novel is a quicker read than a text in biology. Text books vary in how well they are written;
as a consequence some are more difficult to read. Each semester, time yourself reading a chapter
in each of your text books. See how many pages an hour you can read. Once you have an accurate estimate of your reading rate, you can better plan your reading time and studying time.
  • Comprehension
Scan the chapter first.
Identify the sections to which the author devotes the most amount of space. If there are lots of diagrams for a particular concept, then that must also be an important concept. If you're really pressed for time, skip the sections to which the least amount of space is devoted. Read the first sentence of every paragraph
more carefully than the rest of the paragraph.

Increase reading speed
increase your reading speed with these helpful tips.
The most important concept behind speed-reading is eye span. You know that fleeting moment when your eyes blink as you read a line in a book? Your eyes are not blinking without purpose. They are taking in the information, which that brain of yours will later process. The eye blink I am referring to has no more motivation than the textual material at hand. This is where speed-reading or slow reading is decided. If you read word-by-word your are definitely one slow reader. If you read by vocalizing every syllable, you are also slower. Unlike me, you probably listened to your mom when she said that the best way to retain information is to read it to yourself aloud. Overcoming this conventional wisdom alone will bring you a hefty gain in reading speed! bodyOffer(31077) So the big rule is avoid subvocalization which is the clinical term for reading word-for-word. The wisdom behind avoiding the subvocalization trap lies in the fact that your eye span works in conjunction with the eye blink to record the information in the brain. The shorter your eye span, the less information your brain assimilates. Do you get it? That's why the chief trick behind becoming a speed-reading freak is widening your eye span. That means that in one reading sweep at the blink of an eye, you should not only capture one word but words, phrases and eventually a whole sentence.

speed-reading
Speed-reading is the purported ability to read as many as 10,000 to 25,000 words a minute. For example, Howard Berg claims to be able to read 25,000 words a minute by reading "15 lines at a time backwards and forwards." That's about 80-90 pages a minute. Tolstoy's War and Peace should take Berg about 15 minutes to read. George Stancliffe claims he has taught a woman with a reading disability to read 18,000 words a minute. Such a feat, he says, is common in children, but rare in adults. Anne Cunningham, a University of California at Berkeley education professor and an expert on reading, reports that tests measuring saccades (small rapid jerky movement of the eye as it jumps from fixation on one point to another) while reading have determined that the maximum number of words a person can accurately read is about 300 a minute. "People who purport to read 10,000 words a minute are doing what we call skimming," she said. Speed in reading is mainly determined by how fast a reader can understand the words and expressions one is reading. The fastest readers are those with excellent "recognition vocabularies." Faster readers can see words and understand them faster than slower readers. To improve one's speed at reading, she says, one should work on comprehension and study strategies (Robertson).

There are 47 basic and 47 advanced speed tests, so it will be years before you ever repeat the same test. The text of the speed test is carefully selected to be of uniform consistency. Each reading is about 5 pages of text. After you select a speed test the Speed Test window appears:
You can start and stop the reading when you use the timer menu. The text scrolls on the screen when you hold the down arrow on the keyboard. You can adjust the smoothness of the scrolling from very-smooth (1 pixel at a time) to very coarse (for slower machines). If you have selected the timer-start option RocketReader will carefully measure and report your reading speed.

Suggestions for Improving Reading Speed
Improvement of Reading Rate
It is safe to say that almost anyone can double his or her speed of reading while maintaining equal or even better comprehension. In other words, you can improve the speed with which you get what you want from your reading. The average college student reads between 250 and 350 words per minute on fiction and non-technical materials. A "good" reading speed is around 500 to 700 words per minute, but some people can read 1000 words per minute or more on these materials. What makes the difference? There are three main factors involved in improving reading speed: (1) the desire to improve, (2) the willingness to try new techniques and (3) the motivation to practice. Learning to read rapidly and well presupposes that you have the necessary vocabulary and comprehension skills. When you have advanced on the reading comprehension materials to a level at which you can understand college-level materials, you will be ready to practice speed reading in earnest.
The Role of Speed in the Reading Process
Most adults are able to increase their reading rate considerably and rather quickly without lowering their comprehension. These same individuals usually show a

There are many theories of reading. Some regard reading as a skill which relies
heavily on our visual perception and ability to recognise words, letter shapes,
sound patterns and so on. Other theories regard reading much like looking at a
picture, where we read to get the whole message and the bits and pieces, like the
separate brush strokes of a picture, are not singularly important.
Reading instruction often focuses on items of knowledge - words, letters,
sounds. Most people respond to this type of teaching. They search for links
between the items and they relate new discoveries to old knowledge. They
