The ABCs of American Culture
Preface
This small book sketches American culture in simple English. It is designed for those who are new to America and those beginning to learn English. It may also be of some interest to my fellow Americans as we debate our own culture. Every culture has its own outlook on life. Through proverbs and sayings, the “ABCs” (the basics) of the culture are passed on to the next generation. This book looks at 234 proverbs that say a lot about the ABCs of American culture. Many of these proverbs are also found in other countries, especially European ones, but in this book they are arranged to emphasize the distinctive features of Americans. Of course a study of common sayings will never produce a complete understanding of any culture. All cultures contain some contradictions and all cultures are constantly changing. American culture is particularly hard to describe because America is such a huge and diverse country. The cultural observations in this book come from somewhere near the middle of American culture (if it has a middle). When the wealthy and powerful people in New York, Hollywood, or Washington, D.C. want to know if an idea will be welcomed by most of the ordinary American people, they may quote the saying, “Will it play in Peoria?” that is, will the people in Peoria like it? Peoria is a small city in the middle of the state of Illinois, which is roughly in the middle of the United States. Peoria’s people are proverbially taken to be typical of the “average” American.

WITH ALL THE DOTCOMS BITING the dust lately, you're probably getting a clearer picture of what makes a winner and a loser in the race to the Internet land of plenty. Take a look behind the curtain at LearningBrands, and decide whether this e-business model has what it takes to succeed. Form your own opinion, and see how it compares with the experts' commentary and that of the motley crew weighing in on the Web at webbusiness.cio.com/startup
AFTER YEARS OF THROWING silly gimmicks at customers, some websites are now trying to get sticky by offering something useful: "educational" content. Some of these sites create their own content, and some turn to third-party content providers such as Norwood, Mass.-based startup LearningBrands. Advertisers Here's a typical scenario: Potential investors visit the website of financial services company Liberty Funds and sign up for Liberty's free asset-allocation course to learn the ABCs of saving and investing. What these visitors don't realize is that they have actually clicked through to a minisite that LearningBrands' staff wrote and formatted for the Web. Another example: Cooks who want to learn how to make slow-rising pizza dough visit the website of Cook's Illustrated magazine and click on the How to Make Pizza guide. In fact, these budding pizza pie people are browsing a site designed and hosted by LearningBrands.

One service club on campus takes education to a different level.
STAR (Students Teaching Arithmetic and Reading) comprises Utah State University students from a variety of disciplines.
The program was started in 1994 by an elementary education major named Emily English. She started it in order to be a help in the community, said Jennifer Minchey, the director of the program and a sophomore majoring in elementary education.
"The STAR Program gets USU students into an elementary classroom for an hour each week. We are currently participating with eight elementary schools in Cache Valley and four after-school programs called the Boys and Girls Club," Minchey said. "The primary goal of this program is to expose children to quality literature and help them gain a love for reading."
Minchey said she hopes volunteers will see the benefit and importance of helping others, especially children, and it is a great opportunity for USU students to help out local schools.

The ABCs of reading
ABC books are found on all family bookshelves. Everyone has to learn the alphabet, but who knew that learning could be so much fun? C is for City by Nikki Grimes, illustrated by Pat Cummings (Wordsong, ©1995, $9.95). The city is a busy, bustling place, filled with every letter of the alphabet. This colorful and bright book takes children through a delightful multi-cultural city, while introducing them to letters of the alphabet and the delightful things in the city that begin with each letter. Arlene Alda's ABC by Arlene Alda (Tricycle Press, ©1993, $6.95). Photographer Arlene Alda has found the letters of the alphabet in places one would never look for them-inside an apple, on rooftops, in the water, in our closets. Children will delight in recognizing letters in unusual places and will be inspired to open their eyes and look around their environment for unexpected letter shapes. Alphabet Adventure by Audrey Wood, illustrated by Bruce Wood (Blue Sky Press, ©2001, $15.95). Charley's alphabet is preparing to go to school. They line up, but 'little i' falls in the water. She is quickly rescued but her dot is missing. The letters search everywhere and then look for substitutes for the dot. The dot finally makes her appearance and the alphabet heads to school to help Charley spell words. This is a fun new look at the alphabet that kids will enjoy. Crafts: Letter Sounds by Kathy Ross, illustrated by Jan Barger (Millbrook Press, ©2002, $8.95). This book contains a different craft for each letter of the alphabet, such as a tiny turkey necklace, a nice new nose, and an enormous elephant finger puppet. Instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the illustrations show the simple steps. This is a great way to provide kids with letter-based activities.
