Don't Learn to Read in School
I kept my oldest son out of school to make sure he would get good reading instruction. I have taught him to read English, and my wife has taught him to read Chinese, and he enjoys reading both languages and reads them well. Read on below for information on why you shouldn't risk sending your children to school to learn to read. I urge all readers of this page to read the latest thoroughly researched book on reading instruction, namely Why Our Children Can't Read: And What We Can Do about It by Diane McGuinness, Ph.D. Ms. McGuinness reviews the most up-to-date research on dyslexia, phonological awareness, the practice in most schools, and other vital subjects to provide parents and teachers with accurate, useful information about how to help learners learn to read. I would be delighted to hear from other scholars of reading instruction about your opinions on Why Our Children Can't Read and its method for teaching reading. I have already heard from many parents who are satisfied users of

Introduction Language may be our most powerful tool. We use it to understand our world through listening and reading, and to communicate our own feelings, needs and desires through speaking and writing. With strong language skills, we have a much better chance of understanding and being understood, and of getting what we want and need from those around us. Approaching language in these terms is valuable because it helps us recognize what kinds of language are more likely to be understood and what kinds are more likely to be misunderstood. The more abstract or general your language is, the more unclear and boring it will be. The more concrete and specific your language is, the more clear and vivid it will be. Let's look at these different types of language. Abstract and Concrete Terms Abstract terms refer to ideas or concepts; they have no physical referents.

    http://www.ccflt.org/adfl1.htm
Why Learn a Second Language? Learn about another culture! Get ahead! Get a better job! The world is full of languages. How far do you have to go from your front door to know that this is true? Think about how many more newspapers and books you could read, movies and TV programs you could understand, websites you could visit, people and places you could really get to know with another language! Professionals who know other languages are called on to travel and exchange information with people in other countries throughout their careers. Knowing more than one language enhances opportunities in government, business, medicine and health care, law enforcement, teaching, technology, the military, communications, industry, social service, and marketing. An employer will see you as a bridge to new clients or customers if you know a second language. What can you expect? You will learn a second language in exciting new ways using technology and focusing on communication (speaking). Learning a language is not just learning grammar and vocabulary. It is learning new sounds, expressions, and ways of seeing things; it is learning how to function in another culture, how to know a new community from the inside out. Published by SAMS (March 2002) ISBN 0672322870 Price $29.99 Buy from amazon.co.uk Customer Reviews This is a very good book if you have no previous C# experience. I decided to read this book after reading Sams Teach Yourself C# in 21 Days and I found that all the programming concepts were review. I did like this book's focus on the Visual Studio .NET IDE and Windows forms, though. It shows you some basics on using list views, tree views, etc. which Teach Yourself C# in 21 Days completely skips. If you're looking for some simple Windows form concepts or if you're looking to learn C# with no programming experience, this is a good book, but people with C# experience and some Windows forms experience can definitely skip it. I came to C# in 24 hours with a background in programming and management of the software development process. The book is easy to read, is well organized with helpful exercises for each hour (chapter). It contains essential information about the language that is missing from the core reference works. I will keep it on my bookshelf for ready reference.I asked James Foxall a few questions via email and he answered them promptly and with excellent care.

    Balanced Reading Instruction:
    Review of Literature
Pathways Home Page Contents Skills-Based Approach. Learning to Read: The Great Debate . She concluded that there are "consistent and substantial advantages to programs that included systematic phonics" (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). Phonics is an instructional strategy used to teach letter-sound relationships by having readers "sound out" words. In 1990, Marilyn J. Adams extended Chall’s work with her review of research, Beginning to Read: Thinking and Learning About Print . Like Chall, Adams emphasized that effective reading instruction is based on "direct instruction in phonics, focusing on the orthographic regularities of English" as well as lots of exposure to reading materials and time to practice reading (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). In skills-based learning, phonics skills are taught in isolation with the expectation that once sound-letter relationships are learned, meaning will follow. Emphasis is placed on intensive phonics instruction that is highly sequenced. Children learn letter-sound relationships by sounding out words. They learn letter sounds, consonant blends, and long and short vowels. Typically, this approach uses reading programs that offer stories with controlled vocabulary made up of letter-sound relationship and words with which children are already familiar. Writing instruction follows the same vein; children are asked to write only after having achieved mastery in basic spelling skills or when a correct model is provided for them to copy. This type of instruction was widely used in the 1960s and 1970s and today is being promoted as part of the back-to-basics movement.
