IATEFL ESP SIG Newsletter nº1 January 1994 What is the English We Teach? In 1969 Professor Olga Akhrnanova published an article (1) concerning the problems of the kind of English to be acquired and used by philology students at the Moscow State University; since then investigating E.S.P. has constantly been in the local limelight. It gave rise to the' multiform linguistic studies covering the whole range of subjects taught at the University. The present paper is aimed at summarising the results of the research in the field of E.S.P., initiated and supervised by the late Professor Akhmanova. The statement that it is impossible to explore, let alone teach, any subject unless one has tried to specify its domain does not sound very original. In the course of the studies the definition may become more detailed, but ¡it must be there from the very beginning. We believe that this obvious rule should not be suspended for E.S.P.. Unfortunately such dicta as "a definition of E.S.P. that is both simple and watertight is not easy to produce"(2) or "’special language’" and ‘general language’ are good as working concepts but resist clear-cut definition and delimitation" (3) are typical of most theoretical papers devoted to E.S.P.. As a result the proliferation of the special literature concerning the problems of teaching E.S.P. leads to making the original obscurity of the subject even more opaque. By E.S.P. we understand a variety of English characterised by the two most important features: 1) a definite conceptual orientation, 2) a set of linguistic restrictions imposed upon the contextual functioning of words.

Developing General Reading Skills As well as focusing on specific skills for individual parts of the Reading paper and on the general skills that students need to be good readers, teachers can also encourage good reading habits by practising some of the following: Report back Many students will be engaged in reading outside the classroom, perhaps only in their own language. Some of this will be school or work related and some for pleasure or informational purposes. In many cases the students will have become quite involved with the texts. At the beginning of class ask a student to talk about what they are reading or have read and how they feel about it. This will interest other students and may boost the students own interest in reading. Where and when This has a similar aim to 'Report back', but here students, in small groups, discuss where and when they like to read. Is it in bed, at night, or on the train to work? What are the ideal conditions for reading? Students may pick up some useful ideas from each other.

Parents are the primary educators of children's speech and it is uncommon to find a five year old going to kindergarten and not being able to speak at all. Preparing to teach literacy
  • staff's regular demonstration and modelling of effective teaching; the sharp focus in lectures and, especially, workshops on specific key aspects of the teaching of literacy; and staff's good use of student teachers' previous experiences to stimulate their thinking about how pupils learn to read and write.
HEIs should share their expertise to devise effective ways of demonstrating to student teachers that good theory and good practice are inextricably inter-related. In some HEIs, there was need to ensure more overt and consistent attention to helping student teachers develop their understanding of the role of language in learning their subject and effective ways of teaching pupils to read and write within it. Opportunities were sometimes missed to help student teachers see how significant language dimensions in activities and assessment assignments were related to effective teaching in a subject. However, this issue was raised by enough school staff with experience of supporting student teachers to suggest that the HEIs should consider how best to meet the need for more detailed information, possibly using print materials and/or web site facilities. However, in several institutions there were student teachers whose own command of language was limited. These students needed more proactive guidance and support from the HEI on where and how to find help.

I have a real love-hate relationship with this book. On the positive side, it is a pleasure to appreciate Coulson's obvious love for the language and its esthetics: just read his Introduction and groove on his lusty and generous enthusiasm. Also note the fullness with which he covers (in Chapter 15) two very essential topics which are usually omitted from primers: how to use Sanskrit commentaries, and how to recite and enjoy Sanskrit verse (with examples of the different meters). All this is wonderful and removed lots of scales from my eyes. The negatives, and they're major, are: (1) he constantly and infuriatingly interrupts his task of language teaching in order to go on disquistions about conparative indo-european phonetics and other linguistic issues; (2) he not only transliterates everything, making it much too easy for the student to be lazy about learning the script, but incredibly he stops using the script altogether, halfway through the book, relying on transliteration alone; (3) most unconscionably, he unnecessarily enhances the reputation of Sanskrit as a difficult language by (a) using a convoluted system of diacritics and punctuation in order to analyze compounds to death, and (b) making incredible statements like "The devanagari script is complicated, and most students need several weeks, even months, to read it with complete fluency." Bless your heart, the script is quite regular and logical, and every Sanskrit student I've talked to finds it quite simple once it's tackled.

        A teacher friend came to Korea with his 12 year old son and nine year old daughter about five years ago. He provided the children with Korean lessons for one hour a day as part of their home-schooling-education. The children played with the neighborhood Korean children. Each day, they had nearly unlimited opportunities to use what they had learned. The family had been in Korea for about four months when my friend was awakened in the middle of the night by somebody speaking rapidly in Korean. He jumped from his bed to investigate. He soon discovered the Korean speaker was his son, talking Korean in his sleep. Of course, my friend, his wife, and the rest of us, who have studied Korean for years, were envious. What happened was not unusual, but simply part of the process of learning. Brain researchers have unlocked some of the secrets of how the brain learns languages. An article in Time Magazine (2/24/97), "A Child's Brain: How It Develops; How Parents Can Help" reported that children who did not have a stimulating environment usually developed brains that were 20-30% smaller than normal for their age. "...the data underscored the importance of hands-on parenting, of finding the time to cuddle a baby, talk with a toddler and provide infants with stimulating experiences."

What Secondary Teachers Can Do To Teach Reading A three-step strategy for helping students delve deeper into texts By Vicki A. Jacobs You want me to teach reading?
But I'm a content teacher. I don't have time to stop and teach reading. Besides, I wouldn't even know how to begin.
These are typical concerns of secondary teachers when asked to take more responsibility for their students' reading. One reason for their concern may be confusion about what secondary reading is. To avoid feeling that they have to stop teaching content in order to teach reading, secondary teachers might think of reading as a comprehension or understanding process that involves three stages. (These stages are derived from a model of learning called "schema theory.") The first stage is called pre-reading. One of the purposes of pre-reading is to acknowledge the different contexts, experiences, biases, and background knowledge (often called the "given") of students that will influence how they read and learn from a text (the "new"). By knowing what students bring to their reading, teachers can provide them with bridges, or scaffolds, between the given and the new-clarifying unfamiliar vocabulary and concepts, and offering other necessary information in the process. Pre-reading activities also promote students' engagement and interest by providing them with means to preview and anticipate the text. Such preparatory activity is critical for comprehension to occur.
