Product Description: It would be a pity if this interesting, humane, and practical book were read only by parents of recently bereaved childrenfor two reasons. First, the book is about grief in a broad sense. Its lessons apply not only to the child whose pet, aunt, or parent has died, but also to the child whose parents have divorced, who has suffered a debilitating injury, or who has experienced other forms of traumatic loss. Second, let's face it: every child will suffer a loss at some point, so it behooves parents to be prepared in advance. As the authors say, "our task as parents is to prepare our children to deal with the experiences they will have."

Reading and language for teenagers and young adults
Bird G. Abstract - There is little information about language and reading for teenagers and adults with Down syndrome. We know that many of the adult population today have speech problems, both with structure and intelligibility, but we are not sure how best to help them. Some approaches will be described briefly, including the use of reading. These can involve specialised help from a speech therapist working individually or advising groups about how to develop their pragmatic skills (social use of language). We advocate that learning to read can help with aspects of language, speech, communication, memory and independence, as well as being a very pleasurable activity and valuable skill Source - Bird G. General Information about Learning Disabilities
Learning Disabilities

Adults who have trouble reading or learning usually have had these problems since they were children. Their problems may stem from having a learning disability that went undetected or untreated as a child. If an adult has a learning disability, he or she will experience many of the difficulties described in Dr. Larry Silver's article about learning disabilities in children. The difference for adults who have learning problems is that they no longer spend their day in school and cannot turn to the public school system for evaluation and special instruction. They may not know why they have trouble learning, and don't know where to go to find out. Help is available. It's important, however, to know what is causing the adult's problem with reading or learning. Knowing the reason makes it possible for the individual to get the kind of help he or she needs. The problem may arise because the person has a learning disability. If so, then the person needs to work with instructors who know about learning disabilities. He or she needs to receive instruction designed for individuals with learning disabilities. But not all reading or learning problems are caused by learning disabilities. Perhaps as a child the person did not get enough basic instruction to build the foundation that leads to skilled reading and learning. Becoming involved in a literacy program might meet this person's needs.

ROCHELLE RILEY: Adult literacy gets an assist on 2 fronts
April 24, 2002 BY ROCHELLE RILEY
FREE PRESS COLUMNIST The growing effort to improve adult literacy rates across Metro Detroit has gotten two big boosts. First, a coalition of literacy center directors from Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, which has been working with Rep. Mary Waters, D-Detroit, and the Free Press to find solutions to double-digit adult illiteracy rates, now has a toll-free phone number. For the first time, potential students and volunteers in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties can call one place to get help or to help. The number, 866-310-READ (7323) , is sponsored by Literacy Volunteers of America-Detroit, Oakland Literacy Council, Macomb Literacy Partners, Detroit Pistons, Downriver Literacy Council, Siena Literacy Center and New Prospect Baptist Church. Second, the Pistons' Read-to-Achieve Program is donating 3,000 books to the adult literacy effort. The books are among more than 10,000 collected at area Starbucks and Pistons' home games last month. The Pistons program donated 2,000 of those books to an east side youth center and will donate the rest to area schools.

Adults Learning
to Read and Write
Across Iowa there are several sites that help adults who can not read and write to become literate. Many of the sites are connected with a community college. Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa has nine sites where tutors help adults learn to read and write. The Adult literacy program is for people over 18 years of age. It is a place where they can go to improve their reading, writing, math, life skills, and prepare for continued learning. We interviewed three people who have, as adults, learned to read and write. Linda Bruce We found out that when Mrs. Bruce was a child, she found it frustrating to learn to read because she had trouble with her vowels and spelling. During her childhood other children made fun of her. She quit school in the eighth grade. One of the jobs Mrs Bruce had was at a hospital as a janitor. When they found out she could not read she was fired. She has cleaned houses for 24 years but she has always wanted to be a secretary. She said it hurts not being able to read and write because she couldn't help her children with homework. Mrs. Bruce has gotten help learning to read and write at the Lincoln Learning Center (one of the centers associated with Kirkwood Community College). She is now doing great in reading plus she loves to read.
