Dyslexia in Children: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments Reading and learning are the two things that determine the success of a child during his school career. First he learns to read. Then he reads to learn. Because the child with dyslexia battles to read, he is therefore also hampered in the learning situation. Dyslexia: Is the Shoe Perhaps on the Wrong Foot?
Reading is the most important skill that a child must acquire at school, because one must learn to read to be able to read to learn. The implication of this is that the child who is a poor reader will usually also be a poor learner. Unfortunately poor reading skills, and therefore poor learning skills, have become a reality for an alarming number of people. Perhaps it has become time to put the shoe on the other foot… By Susan du Plessis

What is dyslexia? Developmental dyslexia is characterized by an unexpected difficulty in reading in children and adults who otherwise possess the intelligence and motivation considered necessary for accurate and fluent reading. Children with dyslexia have problems translating the sounds within words (phonemes) into meaningful concepts, and therefore have difficulties learning to read and spell. This disability is also often marked by poor memory of spoken and written words. Other names for dyslexia are specific reading disability, reading disorder, and reading disability.........
For children with dyslexia, reading is a different matter. They often cannot recognize phonemes, divide words into individual phonemes, or blend phonemes into words. They may have problems recognizing other written symbols such as numbers and mathematical symbols......

Learning Difficulties and Diet
I have long been aware of the importance of diet and good health. I was first made aware of this connection in the writings of Linus Pauling and his theory of a high vitamin C intake in promoting good health. There is a growing belief that children with learning difficulties can benefit from dietary changes. I was sceptical of these claims, but more recently while watching a film, a drama documentary, called ‘Lorenzo’s Oil’ I realised that there might be truth in this assertion. The film made me aware of the importance of diet to facilitate cognitive development and its healthy functioning. The question which occurred to me was that the intake of vitamins and minerals is a variable factor in an individual's diet. For most of us the recommended daily intake is sufficient for our needs. It may be that some people such as LD pupils might need more than is commonly thought essential. Maybe the food they eat only gives them the dosage dieticians believe is necessary but they may need more than this. Fish may be a food they need to eat more of.

Her reading disabilities went undetected throughout her childhood. Today, she is a successful ad sales representative at a parenting publication in New York City. Q: When did you first realize you were functionally illiterate? A: I was meeting with a client who worked for the Department of Health. He was working on an advertising campaign that targeted the poor. He was telling me how difficult it was to reach many of the people he wanted to help since many didn't read mainstream publications. We started talking about illiteracy and his experience with a person who was functionally illiterate. It was the first time I had heard the term "functionally illiterate" and when he told me what it meant, it was like being hit with a ton of bricks because I knew that definition fit me as well. Before that, I did not consider myself illiterate since I knew how to read a little. But I was 26 years old and I probably read on a second grade level.

Frequently Asked Questions: Reading Intervention for Learning Disabilities Building Reading Skills Interventions for Reading Disorders Frequently Asked Questions about Reading Intervention For more information, Click Over to learn about our software, with instructions for parents and adults with learning problems. The answer to this question depends on the fact that the student has ADD rather than ADHD. The distinction is with hyperactivity (ADHD) or without hyperactivity (ADD). ADHD is a much more serious problem and would deserve a different answer. The general approach to working with students who have both ADD and dyslexia is to get the ADD under control and then work on the dyslexia. Getting ADD under control means using either medication or behavioral training so that a student can develop good academic habits related to assignment completion, sustained attention, assignment recording and other academic habits that can facilitate academic achievement. If these skills are in place, the intervention activities can then move to developing the word fluency and comprehension skills lacking in most dyslexic readers. The word fluency training in the CAAS SkillBuilder is an example of a reading intervention that has proven effective with students who have both ADD and dyslexia.

Tutorials and Share New Ideas. Over the Last Year The beta-test phase never made it to launch. Initially, the advances we were making with some new ideas seemed so promising that we thought the beta testing phase would come swiftly. Always it seemed just out of reach of becoming a true replacement possibility for the current version. Let’s take a minute for those who might not be that clear on the steps of software development testing. After deciding on a concept, the developing organization starts with the software engineer and the various potential components prepared by the development team are coordinated, then there comes alpha testing where we in-house test for bugs and glitches as much as we can, followed by a beta testing where we ask a select group to seek and find anything we may have missed. Ideally, after a suitable period to allow beta testers time enough to thoroughly explore, development gets everything back to go over. Once development has addressed the reported bugs and solved all problems, a release version is offered. The development obstacles may have been solvable with enough resources. However, the funding criterion where we have applied for grant moneys didn’t allow for this concept as a solution. Painfully apparent as it might seem, technically advanced solutions are still not as warmly utilized as one-on-one tutelage with the technologies of yesteryear such as print materials and the more marginally accepted video resources.
