Reading Workshop Reading is a Strategic Thinking Process MAKING CONNECTIONS Making Connections: A Bridge from the Known to the New We know that knowledge about a reading topic helps to improve comprehension. Proficient readers use background knowledge to enhance their understanding. They use this background knowledge to connect to text in several ways. They use:
  • Text to Self Connections: Students use information from their own lives. T-S Text to Text Connections: Students use knowledge of other selections they have read. T-T Text to World Connection: Students use their world knowledge. T-W

Teachers can teach the strategy of making connections within a balanced literacy framework. Click each of the links to watch a video and learn more about teaching this strategy in each component of a balanced framework.

http://www.k12.nf.ca/fatima/readcomp.htm
Reading Comprehension Strategy Several studies about teaching reading stategies have been
performed. Strategic reading involves the use of cues to decode
the message of the written word. Reading the words of a
composition is one thing, but comprehension is the vital point for
the reader. Reading the words is of no benefit if he/she does
not comprehend what is being read.
(1993) state that "the metacognitive process involved in gaining
meaning from the act of reading requires knowledge from not
only of four basic variables but also of the way in which they
relate to one another to produce learning." The four variables
for the teacher and the student to follow include: Text the aspects of the material to be read which will determine the memorization, and later retrieval (e.g. vocabulary difficulty, sentence structure, writing style).

Program of Research on Reading Comprehension
The Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI) is sponsoring this program to expand scientific knowledge in several areas:
    • how students develop proficient levels of reading comprehension; how reading comprehension can be taught most optimally; and how reading comprehension can be assessed in ways that reflect, as well as advance, our current understanding of reading comprehension and its development.
The overarching goal of this program is to establish a scientific foundation for educational practice by supporting research on reading comprehension that is likely to produce substantial gains in academic achievement. The grant competition for this program, now underway, closes on May 31, 2002. The notice inviting applications is available at: http://www.ed.gov/legislation/FedRegister/announcements/2002-2/041002a.html. The notice of final priority is available at: http://www.ed.gov/legislation/FedRegister/finrule/2002-2/041002b.html. These documents complement each other and should be read in tandem. The authors of Mosaic of Thought Strategies That Work I Read It But I Don't Get It, and Reading With Meaning have taught us how to model and explicitly teach the strategies students need to become more proficient readers. The idea for this listserve was born out of the teachers taking the journey through this instructional paradigm. Wanting to jump right in and get started, but often feeling unsure and alone, we wanted a forum to share our questions, our joys, our successes, and our frustrations. Membership is open to any teacher who wants to hear from others teaching reading comprehension this way. You can subscribe from your classroom computer or your computer at home or both. Once you subscribe you will receive all postings. Feel free to "lurk" and just learn by reading what others post, or be brave and write about what you have tried. Tell about how you felt it went and what you plan to do next. Our strength is in our collective knowledge and experiences. We do not have to feel alone in the newness of this teaching.
