Lesson Summary
Two students recommended from a GED class form a teaching team with a health literacy teacher. They discuss which topic they will teach to a GED class and decide on stress. After surveying the classes on the topic, they become familiar with the Internet via the LINCS Time:
Class Description
Southwest Georgia Technical College provides adult literacy services to three Southwest Georgia counties-Thomas, Grady, and Mitchell. Adult literacy classes are taught using a state-approved competency-based curriculum in a variety of classroom settings and times throughout the Service Delivery Area. In addition, Southwest Georgia Technical College offers a health literacy component. In health literacy, students learn to apply reading and numerical skills to health care settings. Students learn to comprehend the concepts and tasks necessary to meet their health care needs. Description of the Teaching Team The team submitting this lesson plan on stress includes the Health Literacy instructor and two ABE students, Melvina McDowell and Fred Stallworth. Both were recommended by their GED instructor, Ms. Susie Butler. The students selected the topic for this project. Although neither had used the Internet previously, they were very proficient with its use at the project's conclusion.

http://www.eduplace.com/intervention/earlysuccess/articles/summer.html
Summer School Plan
Many school districts want to use and in a summer school program. Since these programs are most often used during a regular school year, modifications need to be made in order to maximize the benefits to students. Several factors need to be taken into consideration: Length of summer school
A summer school session of 6 or 8 weeks is recommended for students receiving instruction in and . Students should complete two lessons per day during this 6 or 8 week block of time (see attached lesson plan). Even with this modified schedule, students may not complete an entire level, and the literacy gains are usually less than during the regular school year. and Amount of time for daily reading instruction
It is recommended that students complete two lessons each day. These lessons should be separated by a period of time devoted to related literacy activities (see attached lesson plan). A minimum of 1.5 hours of time is necessary to carry out this instructional model. Grouping of students
and and to use with students. It is not recommended that groups include more than two grades, since the interest levels of these students vary significantly.

Reading Literacy-Books on CD
LESSON PLAN
Students develop language and acquire information through listening. Listening to other people read is an important tool for this development. Parents, teachers, and books on tape are all ways students experience reading through the voice of others. How can older students help develop reading skills in younger students? How can students share their love of literature with others? Project Description In this project, students use iTunes to create audio CDs of books, stories, or poems. First, the class talks about the importance of learning to read by listening to others read. The teacher reads some of the students' favorite books or portions of books, poems, or stories. Students then work with students in another class, preferably at a younger grade level, to select books, poems, or stories to record for audio CDs. Students use a sound-editing application to record their stories that may include sound effects. Recording can be done straight through or in segments. Students save the audio recordings in MP3 files. Students import the sound files into iTunes. Using iTunes, they manage playlists of the sound files and burn audio CDs. Students share their recordings with the class, families, or school.

About Instruction at WIL A-Book-A-Week A-Rhyme-A-Week return to WIL home page If you have any questions, direct them to Laura Smolkin people have visited this page.
Classroom instruction at WIL is guided by a balanced view of literacy development. The document that best captures our orientation is Learning to Read and Write:Developmentally Appropriate Practices for Young Children . This 1998 publication was jointly produced by the International Reading Association (IRA) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) , and presents a "continuum of children's development in early reading and writing." Head Start children may mostly be seen as being in the phase of Awareness and Exploration . Our stance at WIL is to maximize the opportunities for children to notice, developing their awareness through the many opportunities we present to explore the delightful and complex world of literacy. WIL classrooms are literacy-rich. They abound with books good literature and class-produced. They offer opportunities for literacy-related play and experimentation with written forms. What they are not are classrooms in which children are skilled and drilled. Most Head Start children need opportunities to develop delight in the world that print affords us.
