Care of Mice And Rats
(Murine Rodents) Index of Topics General Information Problems Requiring Veterinary Attention Domestically raised mice and rats are very popular pets in the United States. They are readily available, relatively inexpensive and easy to care for, and usually enjoy human handling. These animals have been used extensively in research laboratories for many years. Consequently, their medical problems (many of which are inherited disorders resulting from intensive inbreeding) have been traditionally approached on a group basis rather than on an individual basis. As a result, very little practical and useful information exists on the medical care and treatment of individual pet mice and rats. Furthermore, even less information is available to the pet owner on responsible home care of murine rodents and recognition of their potential medical problems.
Mice
The mouse, bearing the scientific name Mus musculus (interesting in light of the fact that the Great Blue Whale's scientific name is Balenoptera musculus , is thought to have originated in Asia. Its tremendous adaptability, long-time association with people and our dwellings, and unbelievably prolific breeding potential (one reference cites one million descendants from one breeding pair in 1 1/2 years) has allowed mice to enjoy a worldwide distribution. Mice are timid, social and territorial animals that spend a disproportionate amount of time in the wild pursuing an omnivorous (animal and plant material)diet. Feeding is most often carried out at night to escape predation. Laboratory and pet mice are not strictly nocturnal (night-active) but tend to exhibit alternating periods of activity and rest throughout the day and night.

Back to: Advice about Pets Feb 2002 Several years ago we had a pet rat (now deceased). Now my daughter wants one or two mice. Most people we've talked to have rats so we'd appreciate any information about the pros and cons of having mice as pets. Thanks. Stefanie Mice don't live very long. Neither do hamsters, although they can be awfully cute, especially the teddy bear ones. Rats live longer which is why they make better pets. Pet deaths are never pleasant to deal with. My son went through a mouse phase a few years back and we ended up with so many mice. The males would fight with each other and had to be separated. The problem was solved when my husband brought home two orange tabby kittens so the mice had to go for breeding stock. If you really want to get two mice, make sure they are both females. They are not as territorial and will not fight as much. Marianne What makes a good pet? We vote for RATS!

Caring for your pet rat
Domestic pet rat care, these clean and intelligent petsmake wonderful pets. Caring for a pet rat is easy and very rewarding.
When some people think of rats, they think of a dirty, disease carrying, undesirable rodent. This could not be farther from the truth. Domesticated rats are clean, disease-free, and very intelligent. Rats make wonderful pets for children or adults. They are easy to care for and will give lots of pleasure in return. According to the website "Our Rats - Rats as Pets", written by Tanja Saily, rats have been kept as pets as far back as the 1800's in England. She says that rats were not the cause of the Black Plague in the middle ages, It was cause by fleas on the rats and people living in unsanitary conditions. bodyOffer(21058) Rats can live approximately two to three years, and they are about sixteen to twenty inches long including the tail, according to "Mice and Rats: The General Care of Pet Rats and Mice", published by Petswarehouse.com, Inc. It says an adult male rat can weigh up to two pounds but typically weighs less. "Mice and Rats: The General Care of Pet Rats and Mice" recommends the following housing for a pet rat. Rats like to chew, so the cage should be designed to resist chewing and gnawing. Aquariums make great cages for rats since they are very easy to clean and disinfect. They are also relatively inexpensive and come in a variety of sizes. An aquarium for two rats should be at least fifteen gallons.

The General Care of Pet Rats and Mice
GENERAL
Rats and mice in the wild can be one of the worst pests for mankind, notwithstanding their indispensable part within the ecosystem. Domestic rats and mice, on the other hand, contribute a great deal to the advancement of research for the benefit of man. Domestic rats and mice are not the same as their wild counterparts, having been domesticated for over 100 years. Rats and mice AS PETS suffer from bad "press" with much prejudice and misunderstanding directed toward them. As urban sprawl continues to limit the necessary space needed to keep dogs and cats, rats and mice as pets are gradually emerging as an ideal substitute. Easy to keep, with minimal space and care requirements, they provide all the pleasure and satisfaction of a warm, cuddly, intelligent, and friendly pet companion. They are also very inexpensive to obtain along with the required accessories needed to make them happy. Domesticated rats make excellent pets for children and adults alike. They are highly intelligent (being the most used in studies for intelligence and psychology research), clean, and very sociable. They interact with their owners the same as dogs and cats do and may be easily trained. Although rodents are nocturnal (sleeping during the day and active at night), rats will quickly learn to adjust their schedule and be ready to come out and play when you get home from school or work. Pet rats and mice require no vaccinations and carry no diseases. The Plague of the twelfth century Europe was caused by the

http://www.animalhospitals-usa.com/small_pets/mice_rats_care.html
Handling and Restraint: As stated above, domestic mice and rats generally tolerate gentle handling, though both may bite if startled or handled roughly. Mice are more likely to bite than rats under these circumstances. In fact, mice housed alone are more likely to be aggressive with a handler than those housed in groups. Cage territoriality (possessiveness) may be exhibited by some pet rats. We have encountered a large number of pet rats, normally docile in nature, that attack the fingers hands of a handler opening and entering its enclosure. This aggressive behavior is not noted when attempts to pick up these rats are made outside of their enclosures. Mice: It is customary to pick up a pet mouse by gently lifting it up by the tail and placing it into a cupped hand. If a more secure hold is necessary (giving medications or food orally), the handler may grasp or pinch as much skin as possible over the neck, just behind the head. The mouse can then be picked up and turned over on its back by rotating the wrist. The tail can be restrained by gently grasping it with the other hand, or between the fourth (ring) and fifth (pinkie) fingers of the same hand. Rats can be lifted by their tails but great caution must be exercised in doing so. The skin of a rat's tail can easily tear, so it is best to grasp only the base of the tail. Furthermore, suspending the entire weight a rat by its tail is, no doubt, painful for the rat. Therefore, this practice should be only momentary. Tall-lifting a rat that is grasping a fabric (wire mesh, etc) may injure the tail and may also break or tear the toenails. The best way to pick up a pet rat is to place one hand over the back, just behind the head, gently grasp it around the rib cage, and lift it upward. The rat can then be gently cradled against the handler's body, using minimal restraint.
