by Darcey Rhyno This summer two pairs of the American Oyster Catcher nested on Cape Sable Island, at the southern tip of Nova Scotia. It was the first time in recorded history, the bird had nested in Canada. One of the pairs, successfully hatched and raised three young. It's this kind of exciting, ornithological news that appears on an almost regular basis among the pages of the North America Rare Bird Alert and even in national publications, like the Globe and Mail. Whether its Snowy Owls and Harlequin Ducks in winter, Egrets and American Oyster Catchers in summer or any number of rare and unusual species during spring and fall migration, Shelburne County seems to draw birds and birders from far afield. Recognizing the importance of this coastal region, to both avid birders and casual backyard bird watchers, the

get the BIG picture
Red-headed Woodpecker Melanerpes erythrocephalus The Red-head can hardly be confused with any other bird; its whole head is bright red down to the shoulders. The back, tail, and flight feathers are bluish black, while the remainder of its body appears immaculate white in the field. In the juvenal plumage the large areas of the black and white are present, but the bird's head is dusky brown. The young bird of the year retains this plumage only until fall, when it undergoes a long postjuvenal molt. After this molt it cannot be distinguished from the adult. The call of the Red-head is a loud queech , as well as a variety of other notes, including a rolling sound that many kinds of woodpeckers make.

Lucy's Warbler in Oregon:
Only Second Record in State History!
Sheila Chambers first discovered an unusual, small gray bird in her bushes in January 2004. After looking through her field guide, she thought it might be an Oak Titmouse. Then the bird came to her hummingbird feeder right outside her dining room window. Once Sheila was able to get a better look, she identified a Lucy's Warbler, the only small gray warbler with a rufous rump. For the rest of the winter Sheila kept the base of the hummingbird feeder coated with peanut butter or suet mixes (as shown at left). Photos by Sheila Chambers A Chestnut-backed Chickadee discovered the suet treasure and kept Sheila busy trying to maintain a constant supply for the warbler. As might be expected, Sheila’s discovery created quite a stir. Sheila hosted visitors from all over Oregon, and even a few from California, who were eager to see this special bird. Sheila wrote, "It’s amazing how far people will travel just to see a tiny, gray bit of lost fluff ." As of March 31, 2004, the warbler was still visiting Sheila’s feeders. 2004 Express written permission required for use of images or text on these pages.

    • Thick-billed Parrot at Engle, NM, in mid May, 2003 The bird was seen by several hundred birders from across the U.S. Also shown is a pine cone that had been dismantled by the parrot. If accepted, this would be a first NM (and U.S.) record since 1938. A primary feather of the bird was obtained and, to assist the NMBRC in it's deliberations, is undergoing isotope analysis to determine what the bird was eating (commercial versus natural), what kind of water it was drinking (rain water versus processed/bottled water), and an approximate location of where the bird was located when the feather was formed.
