The cirl bunting needs plenty of insects to survive One of the UK's rarest birds has come back from the brink of extinction, according to a new survey.
The population of cirl buntings has increased six-fold over the past 14 years, from 118 pairs to nearly 700. Conservationists say the bird was saved thanks to a scheme in which farmers are paid to maintain their land in a "cirl bunting friendly way". The scheme was organised by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, with funding from government bodies. Seeds and insects The cirl bunting, a relative of the more familiar yellowhammer, is confined to south Devon - but in the past it ranged widely across southern Britain. Cirl buntings rely on very particular conditions to survive. In the summer they require a large supply of insects, especially grasshoppers, to feed their chicks; while in the winter they need a rich source of seeds. Traditionally insects were plentiful in hay fields, and seeds could easily be found after the harvest.

The Rare Species Conservatory Foundation (RSCF) is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization dedicated to preserving biodiversity through grass-roots conservation programs rooted in sound science. RSCF employs the "flagship species" concept to identify and conserve high-profile, priority species in order to leverage protection for the ecosystems they represent. Propagation and management of such flagship species, along with field-based research and habitat protection, are ultimately directed toward long-term biodiversity preservation at a regional level. RSCF provides consulting and technical services to governments and conservation/research organizations engaged in conservation initiatives, and forms educational, scientific, and economic partnerships to expedite habitat and species preservation projects.
RSCF is lean and efficient in its finances and staff, so we move quickly and decisively. We leveraged 8 times our annual operational budget to help create the world's first new national park of the millennium, the Morne Diablotin National Park on Dominica-dedicated in January 2000. RSCF partnered with the Dominican government to ensure that the Caribbean's last, pristine oceanic rain forest would be protected forever. Similarly, we have forged new breeding and management programs for endangered species that many larger, wealthier institutions have ignored.

Since severe storm systems that spawn tornadoes usually travel from SW to NE, these clouds were undoubtedly involved in that tragic storm. I just pointed the camera at the ugly swirling clouds and took two shots. It was only in recent years while refiling a bunch of photographs that I discovered these startling likenesses of God and the Devil/ Satan is at the left and you can easily see the classic goat-like features and evil eyes. God is at the right, and you can see his stolid perplexed face and worried eyes framed by a beard. I couldn't help but think that maybe these two guys were up there duking it out. Mythical beings or religious icons, whatever. What do you think?
