Rare Birds
takes a look at some of the more unusual residents of the Texas Panhandle and recounts the author’s personal experiences, joys, and frustrations in dealing with and living among these remarkable people.
Settled late in America’s history, the Panhandle is harsh land that attracted daring and hardy pioneers and continues to produce true individualists. Still sparsely settled, this area of the country is home to teachers and artists, horsemen and businessmen – many of whom live according to standards and priorities of their own creation. Some of the stories contained here are testimonies to the strength of the human spirit, some look at the vices and weaknesses that arise, while others simply recount the actions and feelings of people who hear “a different drummer.”
About the Author: As a lifelong resident of Canyon, Texas, Jo N. Walker offers her comical, and occasionally tragic, encounters with these Rare Birds of Texas. Her own family and the family she married into were comprised of just such pioneers, and she has found their traits in people from all walks of life. With captivating realism and candor, Rare Birds celebrates the varied songs of America.

Vermont Bird Records Committee Home Committee Members Reporting Rare Sightings VBRC Published Reports ... Links Welcome to our new website!
The Vermont Bird Records Committee is composed of expert birders and ornithologists from Vermont as well as the four seasonal New England editors of North American Birds. The primary purpose is to validate records of birds from the state of Vermont and maintain the Vermont state checklist. Bird records typically originate as written descriptions and/or photographs that are submitted by observers involved with the discovery of a rare bird, rare nesting species, or out-of-season reports. The committee actively solicits reports of any species on the review list as well as any species not currently on the official Vermont state checklist. Each year, the committee publishes an annual report detailing the decisions on all species reviewed during that year.
Nests contain valuable information! If you visited the same nest more than once, please take the time to also fill out a nest record form The last meeting of the Committee was on November 1, 2003. The next meeting is scheduled for November 6, 2004 at VINS Bradgon Preserve in Woodstock.

So please make an effort to document your sighting carefully and completely. Paying close attention to the types of information requested below will make it easier for you to document other rare birds in the future. But don't feel obligated to fill in every blank space for every bird if you don't feel that it is necessary/appropriate for your sighting! Click here for an excellent HTML tutorial on writing up rare bird sightings. And if you want to get a physical (paper) form to fill out and send to the committee via snail-mail, several options are available on the Kansas Bird Record Committee page. Questions, comments and suggestions can be directed to Chuck Otte , KBRC Secretary.

New Jersey Bird Records Committee

The New Jersey Bird Records Committee exists to collect data pertaining to records of rare birds reported in the state of New Jersey, and maintain a State List for ornithological purposes. When used in this context, "rare" describes a species which has never appeared in the state before, or has appeared only a few times; typically, such a bird is not in its normal range or habitat and is not present for a long period. In this usage "rare" doesn't mean endangered or threatened in the legal sense. Such species are not monitored by this committee, and should be reported to appropriate governmental or conservation organizations. The goals of the Committee are summarized in an article written by Richard Crossley.
What to report:
Please report only species on the New Jersey Review List or species new to the state; see the New Jersey State List for species which have occurred in the state. Please DO NOT http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/ensphome.htm http://endangered.fws.gov/ If in doubt, e-mail the Secretary and ask before you report.
How to report:
Reports may be on a printout of the NJBRC report form,

Birding Adventures: Reflections in an OL' COOT'S EYE
July 12-13-14, 2003 - Ensley Bottoms, Shelby Co. TN
On Sunday morning at the Maxson Waste Water Treatment Plant, I was enjoying the tremendous influx of south bound shorebirds. It was the first big push of the season and had swelled the population of "Wind Birds" to over 2,000 and the species total to 15.
I noticed they had started to pump waste water into a pool that is usually kept dry. I knew that one of the many Black-necked Stilt pairs had a nest on this flat and I went by to check it out. This is a large pool and the water had just started into the end far from the nest so no water had reached it at that point. The nest was typical of the nests built on dry surfaces and was nothing more than a few pieces of debris with the eggs laying at ground level. The following photos document the Life Drama that unfolded. The photo on the left shows the nest on Saturday around noon. In the photo on the right, taken Sunday at noon, the water had reached the nest. The two adults had already brought the nest up

Yellow-billed Loon Lesser BB Gull-WP Lake Recent photos Seven Ross's Geese ... Lake Juliette 1-19-04 I finally got a camera the other day and thought I might post some of the birds I've seen recently. The inexpensive camera definitely has serious limitations, but a few shots seem to turn out ok. I have found ducks to be the easiest to photograph and most everything else has been almost impossible, so far. I have used a video camera in the past and have been able to document a handful of rarities with it. Most rare birds though are difficult to find, photograph, and relocate unless you're birding in an area that has many birdwatchers. Many of which know each other, know the area, know the secret spots of that area, etc. I assume the day is coming soon when technology will allow birdwatchers to finally be able to capture on film what they see with their binoculars. Until then, the beautiful curves of a bird will continue to be reduced to a grainy, pixelated blob. Eric Beohm Nov, 2003

Rare Birds by Jim D. Wilson photography by Jim Rathert
Migrating birds occasionally wind up where they never intended to travel.
Have you ever found a needle in a haystack? If you can imagine the satisfaction of finding something extremely rare or beautiful, then you have a hint of what motivates an enthusiastic viewer of birds, or a "birder." Because they fly, some birds can show up in odd places. Migrant birds appear sometimes to simply head in the wrong direction. For example, a few years back a golden-crowned sparrow traveled 2,000 miles east from its western Canada breeding range to Missouri, rather than to the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Sometimes birds seem to forget to migrate altogether, such as the Cape May warbler that stuck it out at a north Kansas City feeder during the winter of 1995. Although the warbler should have been in the West Indies or Central America, instead it entertained countless birders who traveled to Kansas City from several states to see it. Not all the species of birds that interest birders are as spectacular or as beautifully colored as a Cape May warbler. A bird's appeal sometimes lies in subtle cues, such as plumage shade, body conformation or behavioral traits, that separate one species from another.

THE PLOT... THICKENS
Dave Purcell is ready to call it quits. On his marriage and on his restaurant "The Auk". The restaurant, which like the ill-fated bird for which it was named, has definitely seen better days. Everything changes when Dave's neighbor Phonse proposes a mad and ingenious scheme to save the restaurant. They'll report a sighting of an extremely rare (believed extinct) duck. Birder-watchers the world over will flock to the area and, hopefully, to the restaurant. To the skeptical Dave's dismay, the plan works to perfection. Business booms. Things become complicated; however, when Dave falls for Phonse's alluring sister-in-law and when he discovers that Phonse has been up to some other wild tricks.

Cons Weak plot, poor lead performance The Bottom Line The Bottom Line strayed from the herd and was last seen snoozing on the craggy cliffs of Newfoundland. Full Review Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot. Rare Birds . Sometimes the herd is right. Rare Birds stars William Hurt as Dave Purcell. Dave is a struggling restaurateur whose establishment, The Auk , is perched on the lonely and stark cliffs of the coast of Newfoundland. The Auk Dave has a good, albeit very The Auk . His scheme involves a sighting of the titular rare bird, the The story plays out from here, with the introduction of some subplots involving cocaine, a romance and a ground breaking technological discovery. Director Stulla Gunnarson and screenwriter (and writer of the novel upon which the film is based) Edward Riche serve up a movie that is rather cute, in a quirky sort of way. Dave is truly a schmuck. Awkward, dumpy and generally rather dim. He is something of an idiot savant, a brilliant chef who is otherwise pretty much a complete dork. Alphonse is squirrelly and intermittently funny, with manic energy and paranoia to burn. The eventual love interest, Alice (Molly Parker) is cute and likable.
