Join the Rare Bird Club
Who we are
The Rare Bird Club is for keen birders, conservationists and nature lovers from all over the globe, who gather for birding trips, fundraising events and to share their love of wildlife and the natural environment. People also join because they care about the future of the planet and know that being a Rare Bird Club member and supporting BirdLife International makes a difference in species survival.
How it began
The Rare Bird Club was established in 1988 by BirdLife International with Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands as its Honorary President and Jane Fenton as the current Vice-President. Today there are nearly 400 members from 40 different countries. The club is seeking a member for each of the 1200 or so threatened bird species on the planet, so we are already a third of the way there.
Who benefits
When they join, new members 'adopt' a bird from the official BirdLife International Red List of globally threatened species and receive a painting of their chosen species by a recognized wildlife artist.

County Hotline Birds (Oregon)
Admittedly, some species may occur more often than would be implied by the number of records. Accuracy is limited by how well areas have been covered, and whether or not I have been provided information about these species. I welcome any and all information that will result in updating and clarifying the status of these county rarities. Review species are NOT listed. It is assumed that these species, rare anywhere in the state, will be considered rare regardless of location, and it is hoped they will be documented and reported to the Oregon Birds Records Committee. How should you use these lists? At the very least report any rare species to other birders that you know have an interest in the county. Record the date and exact location where the species has been found, and write down a description of the bird (or better yet, photograph it). In addition, please provide me your records by clicking [here] to access the report form or send them to me at the address below. I am interested in past records as well as new records of these countywide rarities. I will update the lists as new information becomes available. Craig Miller

Black-tailed Gull photo by Brian L. Sullivan Hello and welcome to the Virginia Avian Records Committee (VARCOM) webpage. We thank you for visiting us and we hope that you will find the information here helpful and interesting. Mission Statement: VARCOM was conceived in the fall of 1986 and was initiated with hopes of achieving three specific goals and these were to: (from bylaws section II) A. Maintain the official list of Virginia birds . Publish annual updates of this list in the VSO journal, The Raven, or in the VSO Newsletter. B. Validate documentation of birds from the State of Virginia and adjacent ocean. "Adjacent ocean" is defined as that area bounded on the north by latitude 38ø02'00", on the south by latitude 36ø33'05, and on the east by all points 200 statute miles from the nearest point on the Virginia coastline." C. Serve as the repository for all documentation of the occurrence, status, and distribution of Virginia birds.

Banker stole $3m to buy rare birds
Gardiner spent £450,000 ($700,000) on exotic parrots. Story Tools LONDON, England A British financial adviser who stole more than £2 million ($3.1 million) from elderly and vulnerable customers to buy a vast collection of rare birds has been sentenced to nine years in jail. Lee Gardiner, 32, of Kent, southeast England, used his position at Lloyds TSB bank to take cash from customers' accounts. He spent £450,000 ($700,000) on exotic parrots and bought a £450,000 four-bedroom house in which to keep his massive collection said to be one of the biggest in Britain. Gardiner was caught when he transferred £928,000 ($1.45 million) into the account of his partner, Claire Richards, taking the total stolen to £2,172,432 ($3.4 million), Maidstone Crown Court heard Tuesday. Judge Andrew Patience described Gardiner's conduct as "outrageous and disgraceful" and said his actions had undermined the public's confidence in banks.

Rare birds thwart antenna installation
The Detroit Free Press When the men kept on working Wednesday and Thursday, the birds flew away. That may not have been good for the three eggs the couple are tending. "There is a chance those eggs may already have been lost," said Jim Kortge of Fenton, a member of Osprey Watch of Southeast Michigan, a volunteer group that monitors the fish-eating hawks told the newspaper. However, work was stopped when a cameraman confirmed that there were eggs in the nest. On Thursday, Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist Lori Sargent warned Sprint by e-mail that "osprey are . . . protected by state law" and "harassment or disturbance of their nesting is considered a violation of state law." Sprint spokeswoman Susan Kristof said company officials decided to "delay at least a few weeks" the antenna's installation. There has been a program to reintroduce the osprey to southern Michigan, where they had recently become scarce. Three pairs of ospreys are nesting in southeastern Michigan this year, Kortge said.
