Birders now generate many of today's data on species' distributions and field-identification aspects of North American ornithology. Most professional ornithologists recognize that the large volume of data generated by birders, especially that involving extralimital records, cannot and should not be ignored just because most of it is not based on specimen evidence. There has been considerable debate, however, over what sorts of other documentation are acceptable. In recent years, rare-bird committees (RBCs) have been formed in most states, provinces, and many foreign countries (Roberson 1990) to help bridge the gap between specimen and non-specimen records. RBCs are composed of experienced amateur and professional ornithologists. The RBC process includes acquisition and protection of rare-bird documentation, evaluation by a panel of knowledgeable peers, and publication of proceedings. Many RBCs that must limit the volume of records they receive (or be overwhelmed) compile a

Preparing for Field Observations Look Beyond Field Marks Size nevertheless can be determined fairly accurately from a photograph of a bird next to some object that can be measured. Louisiana's first Great Black backed Gull (Larus mariyius, LBRC no.82-5) was photographed on a pier piling (Figure 3). To determine the size of the gull, one of the observers subsequently swam out to the piling and measured its diameter. This allowed a fairly exact calculation of the bird's size to confirm identification. A more precise measurement was that obtained for the first record of Green Violet-ear (Colibri thalassinus) from Arkansas. The bird was photographed at a hummingbird feeder (American Birds 1986, 40:128). The bird's bill length was obtained by measuring a plastic "flower" on the feeder and then extrapolating to determine a value for the bill. The measurement was able to clinch the identification of Green Violet-ear, separating it from the very similar, but distinctly larger, Sparkling Violet-ear (C. coruscans).

Rare birds at risk in Hungary fire
The fire came during record high temperatures in the country BUDAPEST, Hungary Army helicopters and dozens of firefighters are trying to tackle a wildfire which is sweeping through a national park home to rare birds. The blaze, which began in the Hortobagy national park on Thursday, has already engulfed about 70 square kilometres (27 square miles) of the plain's reedy grassland. Record high temperatures, reaching 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit), and strong winds are fanning the fire across the "puszta" plain in the northeastern park. Several villages have been warned to prepare for evacuation. Tibor Dobson, a spokesman for the National Emergency Centre, told Reuters: "A strong wind is strengthening the fire, and the marshy area is almost inaccessible to vehicles." The cause of the fire is not yet known, but it threatens the nesting areas of several rare birds, including the large bustard which is almost extinct in Europe.

Hen Harriers are among Britain's rarest bird of prey One of Britain's most endangered birds of prey is to receive police protection as forces across the country launch an initiative to halt its persecution.
Hen harriers prey on grouse chicks, and many are shot or poisoned and their eggs destroyed on shooting estates. Tuesday's launch of Operation Artemis makes harming hen harriers one of the most serious wildlife crimes in the UK. Anyone harming the birds, their nests or eggs faces a fine of up to £5,000 or six months in prison for each incident. Rural beat officers will visit game and land managers to inform them of the police powers and ask them to support the initiative. Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) wildlife crime investigations section head Graham Elliott called the initiative a "wake-up call to hen harrier persecutors". "Any suspicion of crime against hen harriers will be a high priority for police officers," he added.

No love nest for rare birds
World's most endangered bird puts home comforts before sex.
9 May 2002 JOHN WHITFIELD One of the last three po'ouli on earth. An attempt to bring together a pair of the world's rarest bird has failed. The female headed home without meeting her intended mate. There are only three po'ouli ( Melamprosops phaeosoma ) left - two females and one male. The finch-like birds live in a forest reserve on the Hawaiian island of Maui. But their home ranges do not overlap, stunting the birds' love lives. After a month of trying, conservation biologist Jim Groombridge and his colleagues caught one of the females - the male eluded them. The researchers released her in the male's home range at dusk. But by the middle of the next day, she was on her way home, apparently without having encountered the male. "It's obviously disappointing," says Groombridge, who heads the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. "But it came as no surprise - we're very pleased it went as well as it did." The island's rugged terrain, strong winds and high rainfall hindered the operation. The knowledge gained in the attempt will be vital to future conservation efforts, says Groombridge. The female po'ouli fed and behaved normally in captivity. A radio tag fitted to the bird also allowed the team to track her movements for ten days.

BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) A protected species of bird is devouring rare fish in the German state of Bavaria and creating a dilemma for local officials who now want federal permission to kill birds that once appeared headed for extinction. The population of cormorants black, long-beaked fishing specialists which can stay underwater for up to 30 seconds has ballooned to over 6,000 in the Alpine state. And they are feeding on rare fish species such as grayling and pearl fish, which are unique to the region, German officials said.

Rare Birds
Rare birds are a colourful part of the birdwatching landscape and the unexpected sighting of a rare species is a unsurpassed pleasure. The collation and assesment of such reported sightings is under the remit of the Irish Rare Birds Committee (IRBC). This committee, whose members work in an honorary capacity, operates under the auspices of BirdWatch Ireland.
The Northern Ireland Birdwatcher's Association (NIBRC) provides a similar role in Northern Ireland, and both committees work together to maintain a comprehensive list of rare birds found on the island of Ireland.
