RAINFORESTS
Did you know the Strangler Fig is one of the best known of all rainforest plants. It actually grows around another tree - and may eventually kill its host. A FEMALE FIG-BIRD FEASTS ON RAINFOREST FIGS
A strangler fig starts to grow when a bird or possum dropping, containing the strangler fig seed, lodges somewhere high in the host tree. If nutrients, water and sunlight are present, the seed germinates and soon sends long, thin roots down the trunk of the host tree to the forest floor.
Once the roots reach the nutrient-rich leaf litter below, the strangler fig grows quickly. A network of roots envelops the host, and up in the canopy, the strangler fig begins to compete with the host tree for the precious light. In time, the strangler fig can grow to over 45 metres, and the host tree can be overwhelmed, and die. LARGE UPRIGHT LEAVES OF THE 'BIRD-NEST' FERN
The bird's nest fern is another plant that attaches itself to a host, though, unlike the strangler fig, it doesn't present a threat to its host. The bird's nest fern is an epiphyte, a plant that grows on another plant, or a rockface, or even a solid enough vine, without taking nutrients from its host.

Investment contacts Canopying in Costa Rica by Infocostarica Staff Do you remember the movie MEDICINE MAN, starring Sean Connery, and if you do, do you remember the scene where him and the other scientist (his romantic interest, of course) go flying through the treetops of rainforests hanging from harnesses tied to ropes, well, that is what canopying is all about. This adventure sport is new both to Costa Rica and to the rest of the world, and if the fact of flying through treetops at 40 meters from the ground seems to you as both an incredibly frightening and exciting idea, just imagine what it must be like to do it among the tree tops (also called canopies, thus the name of the sport) of the tropical rain and cloud forests. The sport originated from rappelling, which is a sport derived from mountain climbing in that it also uses safety climbing harnesses and ropes to displace the person from one inaccessible point to another.

Serengeti Nat'l Park ... GORPtravel Birding: Africa DESTINATIONS A Walk in the Treetops A Bird's-eye View of Kakum National Park Contributed by Sharon Safran, Conservation International The long-tailed Verreaux's Touraco floats down from the sky. From your vantage point on the canopy walkway, you see a brilliant flash of red on the wings of this magnificent bird as it lands a few feet away to settle on a Kuntan tree, one of the tallest trees in the forest canopy. This is something you'd never see from the forest floor. Located in Kakum National Park in the West African country of Ghana , Africa's only canopy walkway is suspended 100 feet above the ground, offering you what is truly a bird's eye view of the rainforest. At this height, you don't have to be an expert to identify the colorful patterns of tropical birds as they glide through the forest below you. "The slight swaying is intimidating, but it's an incredible sensation to walk along it. The experience is pure adrenaline, and is definitely not for people with a fear of heights," said Mari Omland, project manager of the Ghana program at Conservation International. Despite its scary appearance, expert designers and climbers were consulted throughout all the phases of its construction, to ensure that the walkway was safely built and able to meet world-class safety standards.

    RAINFOREST
    Diversity in the Rainforest
There are more species of plants and animals in a tropical rainforest than the rest of the world's ecosystems combined. Rainforests account for half the world's total biomass!
Tropical rainforests cover only 6-8% of the land area, yet they contain 50%-90% of all species of plants and animals.
Why are there so many different types of plants and animals in a rainforest?
In all habitats, each plant and animal faces the same basic challenges: to eat, stay alive and reproduce. Each animal and plant develops unique solutions to these problems; that is, it finds a niche that it can best exploit. A niche is not just the physical place where it stays, but also the other plants and animals that affect its lifestyle (predators, prey) and seasonal conditions. Over a long period of time, each animal and plant specialises in a narrower niche, thus vacating more niches for other specialists.
Just how diverse are the plants and animals in a rainforest?

    Subtropical Rainforests
Sub-tropical rainforests are generally found where the rainfall is more than 1300mm annually and growing in fertile eutrophic parent rocks (basalt and rich shales), you'll most likely find subtropical rainforest favouring sheltered gullies from sea level to about 900 metres. There is normally a well developed multi layered canopy of between 10 and 60 species of trees, many of which will exhibit the buttressing commonly associated with rainforest trees. Strangler species, including the ubiquitous Strangler Fig, stands of Bangalow Palms, woody vines and large epiphytes such as Orchids, Birdsnest, Elk and Staghorn ferns will be obvious, and the ground cover will consist of ground ferns and large leafed herbs. Despite the huge diversity of species, the more common ones are Booyongs (Argyrodendron spp.), Yellow Carrabeen (Sloanea woollsii), Rosewood (Dysoxylum fraseranum), the Fig (Ficus spp) and Lilly Pillie (Syzygium) families.
