Amazon Rainforest The Amazon Rainforest is like a giant "heat pump" that sends energy and moisture from the tropics into the colder high latitudes -it produces a climate in which we can live. The balance of nature is being destroyed. At the current rate of destruction the Amazon Rainforest will be gone in a few decades. 87. Travel Guyana:(Guyana Overview)
Short introduction to this land of tumbling rivers and dense rainforests.
http://www.interknowledge.com/guyana/
Kaieteur Falls
The tumbling rivers
and dense rainforests
of Guyana are filled
with extraordinary
natural sights.
Kaieteur Falls,
where the 400-foot
wide Potaro River
plunges 822 feet
downward from the Pakaraima Plateau, is the world's longest single-drop waterfalls.
G uyana, a country of exceptional natural beauty, is a splendid combination of the Caribbean and South America, with fascinating touches of a sometimes turbulent past. Perched on the north-east corner of the South American continent, Guyana stretches 450 miles from its long Atlantic coastline into dense equatorial forest and the broad savannah of the Rupununi. T he picturesque capital and primary port is Georgetown, a city of comfortable, modern hotels, fine colonial buildings, and broad, tree-lined boulevards. The striking wooden architecture is reminiscent of Guyana's centuries as a Dutch, and then a British colony. Georgetown offers an evocative introduction to the land of Guyana. Don't miss the imposing St. George's Cathedral, reputed to be the tallest wooden building in the world. L ife in Guyana is dominated by mighty rivers, including the Demerara, the Berbice and the Essequibo, which provide essential highways into the rain forests and jungles of the interior. Mankind has made little impact here, and today Guyana remains one of the world's most exciting destinations for adventuresome travel and exploration.

Coral Reefs: Rainforests of the Sea
All images in this document are taken directly from the film. Most of this planet we call Earth is covered by water a vast network of oceans and seas. We have given each body of water a separate name. But in reality, they are all connected an immense, watery habitat for a spectacular variety of plants and animals we rarely see, and therefore know little about. The larger marine creatures like whales, dolphins, and sharks get most of the attention. But some of the tiniest animals in the sea may be the most remarkable and most essential for supporting marine life. Within the world's oceans, the greatest variety of life is found on amazing living structures called coral reefs. These fragile reefs play a critical role in sustaining a thriving ocean habitat, especially in tropical oceans. They also provide many benefits to humans as well. Yet, coral reefs are built by tiny animals, each smaller than a pencil eraser. Come along as we discover the secrets of these wondrous, life-giving coral reefs and learn what is threatening their continued health.

Rainforest Information Centre Educational Supplement RAINFORESTS OF THE WORLD What Are Rainforests? There are many definitions. In ecological terms, rainforests have been defined as "multi-storied closed, broad leaved forest vegetation with a continuous tree canopy of variable height and with characteristic diversity of species and life forms" . Tropical rainforests in particular possess an astonishing array of flora and fauna. In fact, at least half of the Earth's species are found in rainforests. Contents 1. The Importance of Rainforests

1.2 Medicines
1.3 Food Diversity

1.6 Homeland for Forest Peoples
1.7 Non-material Values 1.8 Decay and Renewal in the Rainforest 2. Rainforest Facts 3. Deforestation in the Temperate North 1. The Importance of Rainforests 1.1 Biodiversity Because of tropical deforestation, it has been estimated that at least 40 species are perishing every day. This is a rate hundreds of times faster than at any period in recent geological time. Tropical forests cover only 12 per cent of the land area of the Earth, yet they are home to between 50 and 90 per cent of the world's species. They contain 90% of non-human primates, 40% of all birds of prey and 80% of the world's insects and over 60% of all known plants. Because one species in a tropical forest may be found in a small area and nowhere else, the destruction of relatively small areas of forest can cause extinctions.

These, the world’s largest freshwater carnivores, remain common only in Manu, having been hunted to extinction throughout most of their former range. Each animal consumes between 4 and 5 kilos of fish daily and often they can be seen eating large fish on logs at the lakeside.
