Students will understand the following: Scientists are conducting experiments to verify the powers attached to herbs and other plants by native peoples. A reader must evaluate the accuracy and biases of all so-called scientific studies, especially those reported only on the Web. For this lesson, you will need: Access to the Internet Discuss with students how they would go about using the Internet to find material about new or potential uses of plants as medicines. Where would they begin? By going straight to Web sites hosted by pharmaceutical companies? By doing keyword searches? You may have students proceed to follow their own instincts to locate sites and articles. Or to save time and focus students on the same sources, you may want to refer groups of students to the following three sites screened for this project:

Home: El Bosque Nuevo
About El Bosque Nuevo Our Advisors Contact El Bosque Nuevo ... Version en Espanol About 14 million hectares of tropical rain forest have been lost each year-that's each year, every year-since 1980. El Bosque Nuevo is working hard to reverse this appalling trend. Our efforts prove that biology and economics can be combined in behalf of human and biological needs. Too often, they are represented as being at odds or at war. The value of tropical rain forests can't be calculated in dollars or measured in biological terms. Their value is priceless on one hand as well as beyond full understanding on the other…but most experts can agree that losing rain forests to single-minded development is a devastating blight. The danger is, can humans survive if the rain forests don't? Rain forests are intimately bound up with the larger, subtle, absolutely vital rhythms and cycles of life on Planet Earth. They are as fundamental to our collective lives at this scale as cell division is to our individual lives at that scale. We cannot do without the unique range and depth of flora and fauna they nourish in their natural state. But that natural state is being torn apart by a short-term focus on profit that remains blind to the harmonious merging of economic desires with biological needs. There is a middle path that serves both priorities in a sustainable way. El Bosque Neuvo has found-and is moving with growing success up along-that ignored but sustainable "middle path."

T. Sibona. F.A.O Plants Animals Climate Southeast Asian Rainforests The tropical rain forest is a forest of tall trees in a region of year-round warmth. An average of 50 to 260 inches (125 to 660 cm.) of rain falls yearly. Rainforests now cover less than 6% of Earth's land surface. Scientists estimate that more than half of all the world's plant and animal species live in tropical rain forests. Tropical rainforests produce 40% of Earth's oxygen. A tropical rain forest has more kinds of trees than any other area in the world. Scientists have counted about 100 to 300 species in one 2 1/2-acre (1-hectare) area in South America. Seventy percent of the plants in the rainforest are trees. About 1/4 of all the medicines we use come from rainforest plants. Curare comes from a tropical vine, and is used as an anesthetic and to relax muscles during surgery. Quinine, from the cinchona tree, is used to treat malaria. A person with lymphocytic leukemia has a 99% chance that the disease will go into remission because of the rosy periwinkle. More than 1,400 varieties of tropical plants are thought to be potential cures for cancer. All tropical rain forests resemble one another in some ways. Many of the trees have straight trunks that don't branch out for 100 feet or more. There is no sense in growing branches below the canopy where there is little light. The majority of the trees have smooth, thin bark because there is no need to protect the them from water loss and freezing temperatures. It also makes it difficult for

GLOSSARY
Q: WHO ARE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE? A: Tropical rainforests are bursting with life. Not only do millions of species of plants and animals live in rainforests, but many people also call the rainforest their home. In fact, Indigenous, or native, people have lived in rainforests for thousands of years. In North and South America they were mistakenly named Indians by Christopher Columbus, who thought that he had landed in Indonesia, then called the East Indies. Q: IN GENERAL, HOW DO INDIGENOUS PEOPLE LIVE? A: Although many Indigenous people live much like we do, some still live as their ancestors did many years before them. These groups organize their daily lives differently than our culture. Everything they need to survive, from food to medicines to clothing, comes from the forest. FOOD Besides hunting, gathering wild fruits and nuts and fishing, Indigenous people also plant small gardens for other sources of food, using a sustainable farming method called shifting cultivation. First they first clear a small area of land and burn it. Then they plant many types of plants, to be used for food and medicines. After a few years, the soil has become too poor to allow for more crops to grow and weeds start to take over. So they then move to a nearby uncleared area. This land is traditionally allowed to regrow for 10-50 years before it is farmed again.

Take a Walk in the Rainforest A Self-guided Tour
Tropical Rainforests are home to 50-90% of all the world's species of plants and animals. Rainforests provide us with oxygen, help maintain our climate and give us essential foods and medicines. Rainforests have intense tropical sunlight, high temperatures and virtually constant rainfall. This environment has enabled organisms to develop specialized adaptations to the environment and to each other. Over time, this specialization has promoted extraordinary biodiversity in the rainforest.
Please follow this self-guided tour of some
of the various plants and animals you would see
as you take a walk through the rainforest. Begin your tour by selecting an arrow that interests you:
Most of the monkeys and apes in the world live in the rainforests. Monkeys spend most of their time leaping around the trees of the the rainforests.
Rainforests are also very busy at night when different animals, called nocturnal animals, wake up. Some of the sounds you would hear at night are frogs croaking, monkey hooting, and bats squeaking as they fly.
Many different types of plants can be found in the rainforest. The plants live at different locations in the rainforest depending on their need for light and water.

  • Why study the rainforest? Though we often take the plants and trees around us for granted, almost every aspect of our lives depends upon them. They feed us, clothe us, absorb carbon dioxide, provide us with oxygen, and give us building materials and medications. Drastic changes to the vegetation around us affect our health, economy, and environment. Wondrous in their diversity of species, prolific in their plant growth rates, rainforests are particularly important ecosystems. Scientists observe that both natural climate changes and human activities are stressing tropical rainforests in some regions, and so scientists are collecting the data they need to predict how these important ecosystems will respond. Terra Aqua , and Landsat
About 3 million years ago the Isthmus of Panama formed a land bridge between the continents of North and South America. Situated just north of the equator, Panama enjoys a warm climate year round and is mostly covered by lush tropical rainforests. Participants in the JASON XV expedition will visit Barro Colorado Island, which sits like an emerald jewel in the sapphire waters of Lake Gatun at the northern end of the Panama Canal.
