Rainforest Destruction
How is the rainforest threatened?
A major threat to the rainforest is the logging companies that come in and clear land to harvest big trees. There are only about two upper canopy trees (higher trees) per acre, and cutting down these trees almost destroys the upper canopy which is home to most of the birds in the rainforest. Another threat is farming and cattle ranching. People chop down the trees to clear areas, but the soil is not good, so soon they have to move to another area. Sometimes the forest grows back, but it takes many years. A third reason the forests are destroyed is for gold and silver mining.
Where is it happening?
The worst destruction is in Brazil, Indonesia, and Southeast Asia. There is also widespread destruction in other parts of South America and Mexico.
Why save it?
The rainforest is home to over fifty percent of all plants and animals on earth. It is the earth's living lungit breathes in carbon dioxide and breathes out oxygen. Some rainforests are an unexplored frontier, with all kinds of new animals and even new tribes of people. The National Wildlife Federation in 1993 listed ten reasons why we should save the rainforests:
  • People have no right to destroy the rainforests for their own purposes.

ANIMALS OF THE TROPICAL RAINFOREST R ainforests provide us with oxygen, help maintain our climate, and give us essential foods and medicines. Rainforests have intense tropical sunlight, high temperatures, and almost constant rainfall. 7% of the world is covered in rainforest. More than 50% of the world's plant and animal species inhabit rainforest areas. Dozens of animal species a day become extinct. TASK ONE The Indianapolis Zoo would like to expand their rainforest exhibit and need to learn more about animals who live in the rainforest. Your group will be scientists from the Indianapolis Zoo and go to one of the large rainforests in South America, Africa, or Southeast Asia. Pick 5 birds, mammals, amphibians, or insects to learn more about. Here is some information to look for: 1. Common and scientific name of animal. 2. Which rainforest does the animal live in? 3. Describe the animals' habitat. 4. What does the animal eat? 5. Find descriptive details or pictures of the animal. 6. Is the animal an endangered species?

He gazed at me tranquilly out of his rheumy washed-out blue eyes and sat there dressed like the last of the beachcombers with that disgraceful house crumbling and tilting around him. God, the whole thing was just unbelievable. 'What are you doing here for God's sake?' I yelled into his deaf old ears, leaning right up into his face so that he would have to hear me. 'Why are you here anyway?' And now hearing me he smiled a secret and superior smile, as though he knew something that I didn't, and croaked out in an old voice that was equal parts W.C. 53. COCORI Complete Costa Rica-Nature's Cathedral-Rain Forests
Article on the conservation of the rainforests, by Cocori.
    http://www.cocori.com/library/eco/naturcat.htm
by Michael L. Smith It's quiet. Very quiet. But it isn't silent and it's far from dead. Listen closelya faint rustle of leaves high overhead, a bird calls, some strange insect punctuates the air with an alien sound. And the colors! So many greens and browns; with an exclamation of velvety red or yellow or white scattered around; just enough to keep it interesting. The air is warm, humid, sometimes stifling; it stirs very little here. Looking more closely, one realizes that there is tremendous activity all around. This is a unique environment; highly fragile in the hands of man and extremely important to the survival of man. O ne hundred years from now, historians may be compelled to refer to the second half of the 20th century as that brief period of time when much of the earth's biological diversity was eradicated in the name of survival, progress and profits. Paleontologists speak of the end of the dinosaur age as a period of massive extinctions, yet during that perioddespite the assistance of asteroids and volcanic dust cloudsthe planet lost an average of only one species every 1,000 years. Today, human activities are exterminating plant and animal species at a rate of 1,000 each year. By the end of this century, this rate is predicted to reach 10,000 species per yearmore than one species every hour! Unbelievable? These figures are the accepted estimates of some of the world's most eminent biological researchers. Man is on the way to destroying a quarter of all the species of plants and animals that live on the earth today. Most of the species are insects, but they are joined by a large variety of birds, mammals and reptiles, and by thousands of species of plants.

    http://www.cap.nsw.edu.au/bb_site_intro/stage3_Modules/rainforest_module/
    Background
Rainforests are a complex balance of plants and animals. This is called an ecosystem.
In the past, Australian Aboriginals have found food, shelter and medicine within the
rainforest, but have done so, without damage to the ecosystem.
Today human involvement is threatening the rainforest environment.
    Question
Why do you think the Australian government should make laws
    to protect our rainforests?
    Task
Congratulations, your school has chosen you to join a team of scientists who are
going on a dangerous two week expedition into unknown territories of an Australian rainforest. You are to provide evidence which will help support the government's decision to implement laws to protect large areas of rainforests. You are to use your time in the rainforest to study and investigate the plants and animals which live there, and their dependency upon one another. You must also consider the overall effects to the environment of any human involvement, and use this information to explain why the goverment should make

Everyone else has died and you are now all alone and the rescue party won't reach you for five days. You were able to find on the aircraft some food, water and geographical tools. CHALLENGE: During your five day saga , in the rainforest alone, you decide to record your observations in a diary format that is a written journal combined with sketches and photographs. You intend after the ordeal is over (so inspired by the natural beauty, wildlife and the indigenous peoples that you encounter) to prepare a report for the United Nations conference on "The Environments and Communities of Geographical Significance". Can your report save this isolated rainforest ? THINGS TO INCLUDE AND CONSIDER IN YOUR RESEARCH : 1. You must present a detailed map of the World's rainforests locations. 2. Your written reports should include the following information in a diary format and finally in a report format
