122. Early Recordings Of African Americans/Early Ragtime
Essay on important ragtime performers and their recordings.
http://www.garlic.com/~tgracyk/early_ragtime.htm
Early Recordings of African Americans/Early Ragtime
By Tim Gracyk
Try to find the above book that has duplicated issues of a rare African-American music journal of 1919 and 1920, with extra pages of trade journal advertisements promoting black musicians, including Okeh ads from the 1920s promoting Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven records! Page above shows Mamie Smith. Click here to visit (or return to) Tim Gracyk's main page listing all articles. Above is a page from a mid-1898 catalog issued by the Kansas City Talking Machine Company. May C. Hyers was the first African-American female to make recordings. Her records were issued as brown wax cylinders, but none are known to have survived. She covered a variety of genres, from sentimental favorites such as "Ben Bolt" to hits of the day, including "Pumpkin Colored Coon" (KCTM cylinder #203). The above image of Hyers was made in the months that record companies began to take notice of a new American musical form, namely ragtime. The words "rag" and "ragtime" were added to record titles and record catalogs in the summer of 1898. I will discuss some African Americans who made early recordings and then early ragtime recordings. A few books claim that blacks never recorded before Mamie Smith cut the historic "Crazy Blues" for Okeh in August, 1920, but I can identify a handful who recorded in the 1890s and can think of about 25 black artists who recorded prior to 1920. Their names should be better known.

126. The King Of Ragtime Guitar: Blind Blake & His Piano-Sounding Guitar
Article about the artist, by Jas Obrecht. First appeared in Guitar Player magazine.
http://www.garlic.com/~tgracyk/blake1.htm
By Jas Obrecht During the mid 1920s, the unexpectedly strong sales of Blind Lemon Jefferson's Paramount 78s sent record scouts scrambling to sign male blues artists. One of their best discoveries was Blind Blake, a swinging, sophisticated guitarist whose warm, relaxed voice was a far cry from harsh country blues. Some of Blake's 78s cast him as swinging jazzman or jivey hipster, while others walked the long, lonely road to the gallows. The man with the "famous piano-sounding guitar" is still regarded as the unrivaled master of ragtime blues fingerpicking. "Lord have mercy, was he sophisticated!" says Jorma Kaukonen, who helped introduce Blake's guitar style to rock audiences during the '70s. "He would have been sophisticated in any era. I really like the completeness of his piano-style playing, his left- and right-hand moves. He could play a complete band arrangement by himself. That appealed to the lone-wolf mentality that I aspired to when I was learning his songs. Later on, it gave me depth for playing double-guitar and piano-guitar stuff with other people. It taught me a lot about putting music together." "Blind Blake is a great player, a great musical figure," echoes Ry Cooder. "In the years where he was on top, he was fabulous. Blind Blake just had a good touch. He played quietly, and he didn't hit the guitar too hard. He had a nice feeling for syncopation. He's from down there in the Geechie country, and all those people have a real nice roll to what they do. He was a hell of a good player, and he had a lick that was great. And Blind Blake played all over the place, with all kinds of people, including Johnny Dodds, which is just way too much for me."

Besetzung: Joachim Deichmann Kornett, Arr.

Search for a Craftsman Home

Identifying Characteristics of a Craftsman Home
The search for Craftsman homes is a continuing project for Ray Stubblebine, the curator of this exhibition and author of the accompanying brochure. Ray has discovered many houses himself, and many have been pointed out to him by people all over the country who have been alert to their distinctive Craftsman features.
Gustav Stickley and The Craftsman Home
GUSTAV STICKLEY (1858-1942) so synthesized, romanticized and popularized the Arts & Crafts style of architecture during the first two decades of this century that today the style is known generically as "Craftsman." However, only a house originating from plans published by Stickley through his magazine The Craftsman can be a true Craftsman Home. He published descriptions and drawings of homes in this magazine beginning in 1901. In the January 1904 issue, he featured the first official Craftsman Home and announced that henceforth the magazine would feature at least one house a month, and subscribers could send away for a set of plans for one house from the series per year, free of charge.
