86. Ragtime - A Musical By Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens And Terrence McNally
Brief history of the musical by Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens and Terrence McNally, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm53.html
Ragtime Music: Stephen Flaherty Lyrics: Lynn Ahrens Book: Terrence McNally Coalhouse Walker Jr. is a fiery black piano man who demands retribution when his Model T is destroyed by a mob of white troublemakers. Walker's love interest is a young girl named Sarahplayed in the Broadway production by Tony Award-winning actress Audra McDonaldwho has been taken in by a WASP family ruled by "Father," a patriarchal figure who dominates his household (and his submissive wife) with his overbearing presence. Tateh is a Jewish immigrant who unwittingly finds himself involved in the birth of the motion picture industry after inventing a flip book for his daughter. An adaptation of E.L. Doctorow's novel, Ragtime takes us into the lives of these characters in a tale of turn-of-the-century America that also features such historical figures as Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington, J.P. Morgan and Henry Ford. Before moving to Broadway, the show was previewed in Toronto and at the Shubert Theater in Los Angeles.

Caprice Rag (James P. Johnson)
Johnson cut a piano roll for this jaunty rag in 1917. Two piano roll versions played by Johnson can be heard on a Biograph CD (BCD 150). Although very much a rag, you can hear a suggestion of the stride style that James P. was to make famous.
The Cascades (Scott Joplin) Joplin was inspired to write this rag based on a water display at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. It was one of many "waterfall" pieces that were popular at the time. Castle House Rag (James Reese Europe) This rag (subtitled a fox-trot) was written by Europe for the then-popular dance team of Vernon and Irene Castle, whose image appears on the cover of the sheet music. The C-strain is a very captivating stop-time. Cataract Rag (Robert Hampton) A very interesting rag that illustrates the classical-music influence on some of the composers. Charleston Rag (Eubie Blake) Blake composed this rag in 1899, the same year Scott Joplin published "Maple Leaf Rag." "Charleston Rag" is considered to be among Eubie's finest compositions. It contains "tricks" galore, many of which became standard in later years. This MIDI was sequenced from Terry Waldo's transcription in the folio "Sincerely, Eubie Blake" (Hal Leonard, 1975). I heard Waldo play the piece at the 1998 West Coast Ragtime Festival. It takes a technician like him to pull it off. Classic Rag (Eubie Blake) A transitional rag written by one of the foremost writers of ragtime-cum-jazz.

Scott Joplin
Scott Joplin, the "King of Ragtime" music, was born near Linden, Texas on November 24, 1868. He moved with his family to Texarkana at the age of about seven. Even at this early age, Joplin demonstrated his extraordinary talent for music. Encouraged by his parents, he was already proficient on the banjo, and was beginning to play the piano. By age eleven and under the tutelage of Julius Weiss, he was learning the finer points of harmony and style. As a teenager, he worked as a dance musician. After several years as an itinerant pianist playing in saloons and brothels throughout the Midwest, he settled in St. Louis about 1890. There he studied and led in the development of a music genre now known as ragtimea unique blend of European classical styles combined with African American harmony and rhythm. In 1893, Joplin played in sporting areas adjacent to the Colombian Exposition in Chicago, and the following year moved to Sedalia, Missouri. From there, he toured with his eight-member Texas Medley Quartette as far east as Syracuse, New York. One of his first compositions, The Great Crush Collision , was inspired by a spectacular railroad locomotive crash staged near Waco, Texas in September of 1896 (see Crash at Crush In the late 1890s, Joplin worked at the Maple Leaf Club in Sedalia, which provided the title for his best known composition, the

100 Years of the Maple Leaf Rag
By Rex Levang
May, 1999 Go to the Ragtime Timeline
Sample Ragtime Through the Century Scott Joplin's piano roll of Maple Leaf Rag Solace , by Joshua Rifkin (1972) Harriet Island , by Brian Keenan (1998)
THE EXPLOSIVE POPULARITY of the Maple Leaf Rag, like so many other seminal events in American history, was founded on fortuitous chance. The club that inspired the song functioned for only a year and a half. Scott Joplin, the composer, spent only a few years of his life in Sedalia before he moved on to St. Louis and New York. The music publisher met Joplin only by chance; one story has it that he liked the music he heard one day when he stopped off for a beer. It was in all ways an unlikely combination. And yet it happened - with the result that later this month, Sedalia, Missouri, will be throwing a party to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its most famous export: Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag. Joplin wasn't the only composer of ragtime in the 1890s, or even the first one. The new music, which blended march tempos, minstrel-show songs, and the "ragged" or syncopated rhythms, was percolating throughout the Midwest wherever African-American musicians gathered. St. Louis and Chicago, with its World's Fair, were magnets for musicians experimenting with new styles.
