http://www.johnroachemusic.com/biopage.html
BIOGRAPHY A pharmacist living and practicing in Torrance, California (a suburb of Los Angeles), John Roache was also an amateur ragtime MIDI musician. He had been playing the piano for over fifty years and, although an accomplished musician, he had not been so fortunate as to have been born with hands large enough to play ragtime and stride piano to satisfy his expectations. In the mid-1980s, he developed a desire to share the joy of ragtime with the younger generation and thus began to create ragtime music files on his Commodore-64 computer using COMPUTE!'s SIDplayer music program. His SIDplayer music files were uploaded to the Q-Link Commodore network (the granddaddy of AOL) and their fame spread. In 1987 his Commodore ragtime music was commercially published by Softdisk, Inc. Early in 1994, John discovered the power and flexibility of MIDI sequencing. Still wishing to spread the joy of ragtime, he created his Ragtime MIDI Library web site and uploaded his MIDI sequences to the Library. Over the next few years his MIDI music received worldwide attention and acclaim. He was very pleased when many fans of his original SIDplayer music visited his new web site and signed his Guestbook. It had been well over a decade since his SIDplayer efforts, and the music was still remembered. Originally created with Cakewalk Pro 3.01 for Windows and a Soundblaster AWE32 sound card, John's MIDI sequences had most recently been produced using Cakewalk Pro Audio 6.0 for Windows, a Soundblaster AWE64 Gold sound card, and a Roland RD-500 digital stage piano.

WALLY ROSE Wally Rose was a skilled pianist who helped revive interest in both Ragtime and classic early Jazz. He loved and played all kinds of music: popular tunes, Jazz, classical and piano rags. As Wally played Ragtime audiences rediscovered this lost American musical treasure, sparking wide interest which has grown steadily since.
Today, enthusiasm for Ragtime music is a worldwide movement dedicated to preservation of piano rolls and sheet music, research and scholarship; festivals and recordings. Much of it thanks to the modest and self-effacing Wally Rose, his love of Rags, and the records he made in the 1940s and 50s.
Wally Rose was born 193 in Oakland, California. Fascinated as a child by the player piano in his home, Wally showed an early and determined interest in piano; before out of high school Rose had already played professionally on a cruise ship and earned a music scholarship.
He later played with dance bands in San Francisco, performed in bars, hotels and night spots, concertized with the San Francisco Symphony, and helped launch a revival of Traditional Jazz in the bands of Lu Watters, Turk Murphy and Bob Scobey.

Ragtime may be first American music
By Jennifer Brummett
Staff Writer ``I learned so much about circus music last year, I thought I would come and learn about ragtime this year,'' said Edward Berlin, a speaker at the conference on American band history as he began the symposium. The remark was met with much laughter as author/scholar Berlin is recognized as an expert on ragtime music, the theme this year. Berlin, of New York, gave an overview of the musical genre. He has written a number of books about it and lectures extensively all over the country. Distilling it, ragtime is ``march music played in a special way,'' Berlin said. He said it was the ``purest manifestation of American music,'' and likely the first American music. It is punctuated by syncopated off beats that, in its heyday from 1896 to 1917, were associated with black American musicians. ``It's always connected with the march, even on piano,'' Berlin said. ``The typical rag is a close cousin of the march.'' America was undergoing a cultural inferiority complex when ragtime was popular, so newspapers would run stories saying the king of England or the czar of Russia liked ragtime music. Pianist Scott Kirby of New Orleans underscored Berlin's talk with musical accompaniment and illustration. His renditions of ``Maple Leaf Rag,'' ``My Coal Black Lady,'' a medley of John Philip Sousa marches, and ``American Beauty Rag'' were definitely crowd pleasers, all followed by emphatic rounds of applause.

This is an article about Ragtime music . For other uses of the word "Ragtime" see: Ragtime (disambiguation) Ragtime is an American musical genre, enjoying its peak popularity around the years . Ragtime is a dance form written in 2/4 or 4/4 time, and utilizing a walking bass , that is, the bass note played legato on the 1-3 beats with a staccato chord played on the 2-4 beats. Much ragtime is written in Sonata form , with four distinct themes and a modified first theme appearing in the work. Ragtime music is syncopated , with the melodic notes landing largely on the off-beats. The etymology of the word ragtime is not known with certainty. One theory is that the "ragged time" associated with the walking bass set against the melodic line gives the genre its name. Table of contents 1 Historical context

The Issues
Ragtime research is all over the map. On one side of the map reside an established group of researchers and writers who have made a career of repeating the old clichés, half-truths, and outright fictions. Some newcomers, lacking the insight and imagination to see beyond the bluster, continue the pattern of perpetuating baseless stories. In another part of the landscape we see resourceful investigators who do the legwork required to illuminate unsuspected facets of a history that is obscured as much by the unthinking repetition of unfounded myths as by the unspoken, forgotten truths. Among the latter are several who are little known and unheralded, but who have been unearthing nuggets of splendor. One would think these latter researchers would be celebrated and encouraged; in some circles they are. But a significant segment of today’s ragtime community prefers to retain the familiar, prefers the comfortable myths to any upsetting new versions of the ragtime story. At the root of this seemingly perplexing attitude is the pioneering study of ragtime
