Feedback The National Ragtime and Jazz Archive In March 1974 the Board of Trustees, in recognition of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's part in the St. Louis metropolitan community and its rich cultural tradition of jazz and ragtime music, established the National Ragtime and Jazz Archive at Lovejoy Library. The archive documents early recorded jazz and the lives of notable jazz musicians from the St. Louis area. The John Randolph Collection, with approximately 10,500 78-rpm records, provided the basis of the archive's record collection. Today there are more than 20,000 records in the archive. Audio and videotapes, sheet music, piano rolls, and oral history materials are also included. The Old Guys From the creation of the archive, many dedicated musicians and members of the University community have donated time, funds, and materials to develop the archive. A group of SIUE faculty members formed a jazz and ragtime band called the "Old Guys." Included in the group were W. Deane Wiley, Dan Havens, Ray Helsel, Jack Ades, Lyman "Zeke" Holden, Warren Brown, and the ever-popular ragtime pianist and vocalist, Jean Kittrell. The Old Guys performed benefit concerts and issued three recordings which have been sold to further benefit the archive. Two albums in particular, Hot Ginger and Dynamite and Jazz In the Parlor , have been well-received. These albums can be purchased for $10.00 each in the Music Listening Room to support the archive.

Songs, Music, Sheet Music the History of Tin Pan Alley and Its Publishing Houses We present a study on the Tin Pan Alley publishing house:
PART II We are going to use this space during the next few weeks to present the Tin Pan Alley publishing houses of the early XXth century, along with some examples of their production, today a fast growing collectibles market. Be sure to bookmark this page and return in about 10 days to read about one of the other Tin Pan Alley publishers. This enterprise was established in 1886 and was bought out eventually by Warner and the Hollywood interests in 1929. The Witmark "Sons" were Isidore (1869-1941), Julius (1870-1929) and Jay (1877-1950)- the Whiz Kids of Tin Pan Alley! They were respectively 17, 16 and 14 when they started their publishing business. The boys were songwriters and carried out a small but successful home business as music printers until their own pieces, especially one by Isidore, started to become what one could call "popular". In fact, the meager royalties given to Isidore by Willis Woodward for his first songs, "A Mother Is A Mother After All", and "A Sister’s Lullaby" caused them to form their own music publishing company. As they were minors at the time, their father Marcus formed the company in his own name but evidently had little real intervention in it. They were the first to publish "professional copies" and to provide them gratuitously to performers, as well as free orchestration.

Eighteen-ninety-nine, late in the year, Scott Joplin's first successful rag "The Maple Leaf Rag" is published out in Sedalia, Missouri. Prior to that, by the way, he had had another rag published in Kansas City. We're talking 1899. Now the underground is finally beginning to surface, to simplify it, and to begin its takeover of popular music, which will take some time. Joplin's rags were not the first rags and it's only fair to say that as much as we, I, love the music of Scott Joplin, who has emerged as "the" master and certainly with good cause, was only one of thousands who were doing this. He happens to have been the best, but to say that Joplin himself, with his emergence in 1899, started the whole thing is nonsense. It would be like saying there was only one rock group in Liverpool in 1962. I mean Joplin was one of many. Ragtime songs are out there. There is the beginning of syncopation in lyrics of songs. There is the beginning of syncopation in marches and in instrumental pieces, but ragtime as a full development, as "the" thing, as the one that the critics are now saying, "Wow, what's going on here," had not happened yet. It's simmering. It's going to take some time for the pianists, not to mention the ears of Americans, to say, "What is that? Wow, I like that. What are they playing, Harriet? I mean it's exciting. What do they call that? Oh, they call it rag time," two words in those days, they hyphenated, then one word. A phenomenon. Again, we don't know about a lot of this.

    Ragtime Music
Ragtime music first appeared in the early part of the 20th century, rising in the 1890's and fading away by 1920. It is one of the first purely American musical syles and has strong African-American influences.
Originally created by professional performers in honky-tonks and saloons, 'ragtime' evolved as a distinct style through the years as piano players began to compete with each other.
    Scott Joplin
The king of ragtime music writers, Scott Joplin brought ragtime to its classic form. An American composer and pianist, he was one of the most important developers of ragtime music. He elevated the "piano rag" to an artistic level unmatched before or since.
Born in Texarkana, Texas, Joplin taught himself to play the piano as a child, learning mostly classical music from a German neighbour. In his late teens he became an itinerant pianist in the low-life districts that provided the chief employment for many of the local black musicians. He settled in St. Louis in 1885. In 1893 he played at the  World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and in 1894 he moved to Sedalia, Missouri.

Ragtime jazz sprouted in St. Louis in the late nineteenth century. Centered around the Chestnut Hill area between Chestnut and Market around 20th Street, clubs in the Mill Creek Valley were a hotbed of new rag and improvisational music. Tom Turpin's Rosebud Cafe was a gathering place for these musicians and composers as well as those following their music. Scott Joplin worked as a piano player at the Rosebud during his two stints in St. Louis, and wrote his classic ragtime "The Entertainer" there. W. C. Handy's "St. Louis Blues" originated from the music experience in the Chestnut Hill area, giving St. Louis both a reputation for and heritage of jazz as the genre gained strong national attention starting in the 1920s. LAFAYETTE ESCADRILLE SQUADRON HISTORICAL INFORMATION The early members of the Escadrille Americaine. "I don't know a single one of the boys who didn't have a deep-seated desire to help France"
A quote from Edwin Parsons, Lafayette Escadrille, on the spirit of the American pilots fighting in France beginning in 1916. Brief Summary. The Lafayette Escadrille (LE) was made up of American pilots based in France that fought against the Jagdstaffeln of Germany prior to the United States entry into World War 1. Originally called the Escadrille Americaine , this group is perhaps as well remembered for their actions in the officer's club, as their success in the skies. The Lafayette Escadrille had 38 American pilots that rotated to other squads within the Lafayette Flying Corps, a part of the French Air Service. In all, 65 Lafayette Escadrille and Lafayette Flying Corps members perished during the air war effort over France. The Lafayette Escadrille was formed in April 1916 and carried the cause of freedom to skies over western Europe until the squadron was absorbed by the United States Air Service in 1918. The music of the times, that included ragtime, was played on a gramophone. Select a ragtime music

The 1910s from World War I to Ragtime Music
    - Book Reviews, by Feinstein, Stephen
    From The Critics
    Children's Literature

While the 1910s began peacefully and promising great prosperity for America, it was the decade that saw the rise of Communism and an horrific World War. The emphasis of this slim volume is on the political aspects of the decade but it does give a nod to the growth of labor unions, the birth of the motion picture industry, the sinking of the Titanic and the great pandemic of 1918. It is difficult to do more than briefly touch upon the many changes in the world in a mere 55 pages. The writing is straightforward with evidence of careful research. As an introduction to the era, this is a serviceable vehicle but readers will have to look elsewhere for books to flesh out the skeleton. The book includes a timeline, bibliography, web sites and index. It is part of the "Decades of the 20th Century" series. 2001, Enslow Publishers, $17.95. Ages 12 to 14. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey

History 426, History of the United States, 1877-1916 An Introduction to American Cultural Expression during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era These pages are intended primarily to provide links to websites that present major patterns in cultural expression during the years from the end of the Civil War to the beginning of World War I. Each category begins with a brief overview of developments, followed by links. Music Just as with painting, many aspects of American music derived from European influences. In music, some of the European models then in vogue dictated attention to the music of the common people. Antonin Dvorz¡k, a prominent Czech composer, lived in New York City in the mid-1890s as director of the National Conservatory of Music. He urged his pupils to express the spirit of liberty and to draw upon folk music in their work, and he incorporated some African-American themes along with other American folk music into his ninth symphony, From the New World (1893), perhaps the most popular symphony composed in the United States. Charles Ives drew upon American folk themes in his early compositions, dating to the first years of the 20th century even though they were not performed until much later. Better known at the turn-of-the-century was a black composer who drew directly upon African American themes: Scott Joplin. Joplin, more than any other single person, is associated with ragtime, which became popular during the late 1890s and early 20th century. Born in Texarkana, Texas, in 1869, Joplin piano with a local German music teacher and traveled through the African-American communities from New Orleans to Chicago. As he traveled, he came into contact with ragtime music and he began to write his own. In 1899, he published
