In comparison to the rivers on the western side of the Andes, these rivers are bigger and offer river runs throughout the year. If you are looking for some great rafting or kayaking, while at the same time experiencing the rainforest, then this is the place to go. Many tour companies will combine rafting trips with excursions into the surrounding jungle. Trips can range anywhere from 1-5 days. One of the most popular rivers to run is the Rio Napo. This river is one of the major tributaries that feed into the Amazon River. Most of the rapids on this river are classified as Class 3. The river definitely offers a little something for everyone. You will experience incredible jungle scenery, thrilling rapids, some calm areas of water, plus much more. The highest water levels tend to be from March through October.

Up for a last-minute river vacation? You've got lots of choices You don't have a prayer of getting on premium rafting runs like Idaho's Middle Fork Salmon or the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon this summer: they've been booked solid for months, if not years. Luckily, the West is blessed with many other rivers that offer good scenery, dependable summer-long water flow, and at least four days of fun for the whole family. Trips on these gems are generally much less expensive than those on the more popular runs. Prices listed below are per-person ranges for adults, and most companies offer family discounts. (Kids should be 7 or older unless noted.) One good general list of guides is the free directory from California Outdoors (800/552-3625), a clearinghouse for outfitter information; it focuses on companies offering trips on California rivers but includes a number of the bigger outfitters that offer trips elsewhere in the West. Another source of trip-planning advice is Western Whitewater (800/928-7238), which can offer advice as well as assistance with reservations.
