STRATEGIC PLAN 1999-2004 Founded in 1880 as a small fraternal organization which brought together like-minded outdoor enthusiasts. ACA Vision:
Within the near future the ACA will be a household name ~ recognizable and respected by all people who share our love of the outdoors, paddlesport in all its various forms, and clean, accessible recreational waters. The ACA will be America's canoe, kayak and rafting organization of choice. ACA Mission:
To promote the health, social and personal benefits of canoeing, kayaking and rafting and to serve the needs of all paddlers for safe, enjoyable and quality paddling opportunities. A new millennium -marking the third century in which it has operated -the membership of this venerable American institution took time to reflect on its past, evaluate its present, and set a bold new vision for its future. That vision is summarized in this strategic plan. With its creation in 1880 as a small fraternal organization which brought together like-minded outdoor enthusiasts, the ACA's 118 year story of success has always been grounded in its rich history and centered on the invaluable contribution made by its founders and active volunteers down through the years. Against the backdrop of this history and building on the solid foundation established by all of those involved in the ACA's century old tradition of service, the ACA is today an organization with nearly 35,000 members nationwide and is a recognized leader in the fields of outdoor recreation, waterway conservation, amateur athletics, safety, education and instruction.

click on any picture for a larger view The Sevier River, or as the Paiute Indians called it, the Seve'uu , starts it's journey northward from two distinct head waters. Mammoth Creek some 80 miles to the south originates near Cedar Breaks National Monument, and empties into the south fork of the Sevier, which originates south of Bryce Canyon National Park. The other main head water, or East Fork of the Sevier, originates in the Fishlake National Forest north of Otter creek State Park. As the river flows north it is impeded by Paiute Reservoir. From Paiute Reservoir the water is dam released mainly for irrigation purposes. Because it is dam controlled, we are assured of a consistent long season for rafting and kayaking. The river flows through scenic Marysvale valley, surrounded by mountain peaks rising up to 12,189 feet. It then enters Marysvale Canyon and begins a drop of 60 feet per mile. The steep canyon walls present a scenic backdrop with formations and sheer cliffs rising 500 feet above the rivers course.

Whitewater Kayaking and Rafting
Whitewater is an adventurous recreational sport for those who love the speed, the challenge, and the competition of man against nature. It can be done safely and without injury if the person takes along knowledge and skills. The rivers are constantly changing depending on water flow, debris, and rock formations so knowing the river and educated about the hazards is the best way to have a fun, safe time. Below are a few terms to familiarize you with the whitewater features.
1. A wave is created when the water flows upward. Kayakers will surf waves just like a surfer rides ocean waves. The only difference is one is stationary and the other is moving.
2. A hole is created when the river current drops over a rock or ledge and circulates instead of continuing its downstream flow. A significant feature because it either offers play opportunities or danger of trapping, depending on the power of the hole.
