THORACIC RADIOLOGY
Conventional radiological techniques such as the chest radiograph (X-ray) have been in use for almost 100 years and produce relatively crude two dimensional images of structures within the thorax. Chest radiographs remain widely used, but the applications of computer technology in Radiology over the last two decades have led to new imaging techniques capable of demonstrating both fine detail of normal structures and subtle disease processes previously undetectable without invasive procedures such as surgery. The use of imaging techniques for the diagnosis of disease continues to increase rapidly, and familiarization with these investigations is valuable in virtually all areas of medical practice. Thoracic Radiology introduces first and second year medical students to various imaging modalities which may be used to identify and assess the anatomical structures within the thorax and to introduce the concept of living Anatomy by the use of real-time dynamic images. The purpose of this program is to demonstrate the various imaging modalities which may be used to identify and assess the anatomical structures within the thorax and to introduce the concept of living anatomy by the use of real-time dynamic images. Features of this program are: Chest radiographs, mammography, angiography

We are a regional referral center specializing in imaging guided procedures. Using imaging technology we are able to perform a wide range of procedures to diagnose and treat many common as well as rare disorders. Often with interventional procedures surgery can be avoided. In fact we are able to treat some disorders for which there is no surgical alternative.
Some of the more commonly performed procedures in Interventional Radiology include uterine artery embolization for treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids, vertebroplasty for treatment of compression fractures of the spine and angioplasty and stents for treatment of blockages of the arteries to the kidneys or blockages related to other peripheral vascular disease
Procedures are performed when indicated following consultation with one of our interventional radiologists. Most patients are dismissed within 24 hours and often the same day. Full pre-operative, anesthesia, recovery and observation facilities are available as needed.
Our doctors are subspecialty certified in Interventional Radiology by the American Board of Radiology. We have a dedicated staff of 14 nurses and technologists who work exclusively in the interventional suites. Our imaging equipment is the finest available anywhere and is completely state of the art. We have centralized scheduling and communications to make sure the patient's experience is well coordinated and hassle free. Daytime and after hours phone numbers are below.

On April 29, Academy President Ronald L. Arenson, M.D. submitted testimony to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education in support of a 12 percent increase in the budget for the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). "The Academy of Radiology Research, on behalf of the radiology and imaging science community, requests a fiscal year 2005 appropriation of $325 million for the NIBIB," Arenson said. "This represents growth of approximately 12 percent over 2004, a health increase in the present budgetary climate but relatively modest in comparison to the percentage increases that enabled previous new Institutes to succeed in the past. New Institutes need and deserve special consideration in the appropriations process in order to grow and develop at a reasonable pace. The NIBIB is no exception." What is Obstetric Ultrasound Imaging?
Ultrasound (US) imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, is a method of obtaining images of internal organs by sending high-frequency sound waves into the body. The sound wave echoes are recorded and displayed as a real-time visual image. No ionizing radiation (x-ray) is involved in ultrasound imaging. Obstetric ultrasound refers to the specialized use of sound waves to visualize and thus determine the condition of a pregnant woman and her embryo or fetus Top
What are some common uses of the procedure?
Obstetric ultrasound should be performed only when clinically indicated. Some indications may be:

Uterine Fibroid Symptoms and Diagnosis
Fibroid tumors are noncancerious (benign) growths that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus. While fibroids do not always cause symptoms, their size and location can lead to problems for some women, including pain and heavy bleeding. Fibroids can dramatically increase in size during pregnancy. This is thought to occur because of the increase in estrogen levels during pregnancy. After pregnancy, the fibroids usually shrink back to their pre-pregnancy size. The typically improve after menopause when the level of estrogen, the female hormone that circulates in the blood, decreases dramatically. However, menopausal women who are taking supplemental estrogen (hormone replacement therapy) may not experience relief of symptoms. Fibroid tumors of the uterus are very common, but for most women, they either do not cause symptoms or cause only minor symptoms. Fibroids can cause very heavy menstrual bleeding, clotting and pelvic pain, leading many women to seek treatment. Fibroids often fail to respond to medical therapy and then surgical procedures are often recommended. uterine fibroid embolization
