It has been widely used for decades. Almost all gears, instruments with digital control interface, and communications devices are equipped with the RS-232 interface. The typical transmission speed of an RS-232 connection is 9600 bps over a maximum distance of 15 meters. RS-422: Is a serial communications standard that provides a much longer transmission distance, but fewer signal lines compared to RS-232. RS-422 uses differential transmission technology, and thus provides high-speed transmission of up to 10 Mbps. The maximum transmission distance is 1.2 km at a transmission speed of 9600 bps. RS-485: Is an enhanced version of RS-422. It uses a 2-wire bus topology, and is compatible with the RS-422 interface. By using an RS-485 2-wire bus, you can establish a very economical network. However, RS-485 only defines electrical signal specifications; users must define the software protocol themselves.

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Sparks, Waves and Wizards: Communications at Sea is an interactive, one-of-a-kind Bay Area exhibition that tracks the colorful history of maritime communication, from hand-held semaphore to orbiting satellite. The first new permanent addition to the Maritime Museum since 1992, Sparks is stationed on the ship-shaped Museum's top floor a unique vantage point which offers stunning bridge-to-bridge views of San Francisco Bay. There, for the first time in San Francisco history, the general public can see, hear and chart the movements of boats at work on the Bay with the aid of a computerized Coast Guard map of Bay vessel traffic. The exhibit also features a walk-in, authentic recreation of a 1943 Victory ship radio room (on the Museum's second floor) which contains a working radio operator's station. We invite you to "visit virtually" via the Quicktime presentation below. The "VR" may take some time to download (it's about a 450K file), but then you will be able to explore a 360-degree view of the exhibit.
