62. How To Become A Radio Amateur
How to Become A radio amateur. Section A. Introduction. Why must I take a radio and electrical theory examination before I can become a radio amateur?

How to Become A Radio Amateur
Section A
Introduction
This booklet is intended to introduce you to amateur radio; a hobby that is challenging, rewarding and educational. It also serves to answer some of the questions which are asked by prospective, or even existing, radio amateurs about the hobby.
What does amateur radio offer me?
Amateur radio is unique in the freedom it allows you to develop and experiment with radio communication equipment. It can even enable you to communicate around the world. Radio amateurs may make contact with people in any country. Even language differences need not be a barrier by using Morse code and ÎQâ codes (these are three-letter codes which have the same meaning throughout the amateur radio world). Radio amateurs are often at the forefront of radio technology and increasingly they are able to use their home computers to combine computer technology and radio. By becoming a radio amateur you can prepare yourself for a world which is increasingly technology-based. For example, you can experiment with antennas, television, RTTY (radio teletype), data (including computer controlled communications such as packet radio), satellite communications and, of course, short or long range voice or Morse code transmissions. The hobby frequently leads to participants making lasting friendships both in the United Kingdom and worldwide. In this way it has proved to be a great asset to those who are housebound, or who find mobility a problem, because of the opportunity it provides to make friends. Many other amateurs are able to offer their services to the first aid organisations and even the police at public events and during disaster relief operations at home and abroad. For most amateurs, however, it is just the sheer excitement of that chance contact with an individual hundreds or even thousands of miles away that is so absorbing.

Amateur Radio Propagation Studies Science, research, engineering, operating What do you propose to do this night? Welcome to the latest update of the Amateur Radio Propagation Studies web site providing actual information on sporadic E, Aurora and FAI dx propagation on very high frequencies. In the European sector, we already got some sporadic E openings in the month of May. Compared to last year, this openings were much less spectacular though. A remarkable Aurora QSO was managed by IK2YXK, IK2GSO and HB0/HA5OJ in April, see the below editorial and the paper discussing this QSO in detail. If you never worked FAI dx QSOs before, you are requested to consider the article on the left. You may also find a paper dealing with this disturbing spam messages in the dx cluster network and you may download new monitor wallpapers featuring moonbounce communication.

Join field-aligned backscatter tests in 50 and 144 MHz In ham radio terminology, FAI (field-aligned backscatter) denotes a propagation mode in mid-latitudes involving skewed radio paths very similiar to Auroral backscatter. The 50 MHz SESCAT radar located on the island of Crete investigates this type of backscatter on a scientific basis. The radar echoes originate from unstable plasma structures drifting westward in the pre-midnight summer nighttime (

The data herein indicates that some Amateurs are qualified in sending and receiving the Morse Code. It should be noted that, although the only legislated requirement for operation in all Amateur bands is now Basic Qualification and a code speed of 5 WPM, many Amateurs have qualified at much higher speeds. RAC now offers a Certificate of Proficiency in Morse Code , to be administered by the RAC Awards Manager, to recognize voluntary candidate Morse code reception proficiency at speeds of 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 WPM.
