Mouth guards worn for Olympic sports, what about chess?
—April is National Facial Protection Month focuses on sports injury prevention than teeth—
Rosemont, IL (April 1, 2002)—Whether or not chess becomes an Olympic (winter or summer) sport, you certainly do not see chess players wearing mouth guards. You do see hockey players, skiers, boxers, wrestlers and other Olympian athletes wearing them. You also see non-Olympians, such as roller bladers, baseball players, skateboarders and soccer players, wearing protective mouth and face gear. What’s the deal?
The boys’ parents do not mind paying for orthodontics, which is why they also do not mind paying for mouth guards.
The month of April finds people, children and adults alike, outside playing sports and exercising. Such healthy activities, however, can turn unhealthy when injuries occur. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American Association of Orthodontists are sponsoring the third annual “April is National Facial Protection Month.” Facial protection and injury prevention are the key messages from this “team” of dental specialists. Countless “team” members are not only doctors but also parents and athletes themselves. They know all too well the effects of facial injuries. Take Dr. Bill Baker for example.

    Profile HISTORY
Joe Sobek invented racquetball in 1949 on a Connecticut handball court. Seeking a game with fast pace that was easy to learn, Sobek designed the first short strung paddle, devised rules combining the basics of handball and squash, and named his modification "paddle rackets." His experiment was an overnight success; the sport caught on quickly and has since evolved into racquetball as we know it today. By the early 70's, court clubs could be found in every state and the sport enjoyed a rapid and steady rise in popularity. As Americans sought new and challenging athletic activities, the timing was perfect for racquetball courts were accessible nationwide and the sport was fun and easy to learn. The late 70's and early 80's saw racquetball become one of the fastest growing sports in America as thousands of new racquetball courts were built to satisfy the demand. But the sport saturated the market and reached its peak in the mid 80's, when many clubs either closed their doors or began converting courts to other uses. But by 1987 the decline leveled off and racquetball regained a steady, manageable growth rate.

    17. Dance Sport In The Olympics
Internationale de Polo, International racquetball Federation, International fact have cut some sports in recent order to protect olympic tradition ( 10,000
    http://www.eijkhout.net/rad/dance_other/olympic.html
    DanceSport in the Olympics
The state of affairs before 2000
On Sept. 8, 1997 IOC granted the International DanceSport Federation (IDSF) status as a recognized federation and a member of the IOC. This does not mean that dancing has been recognzed as a medal sport. It simply means that the IOC has recognized an international body for governing dance-sport. This recognition is granted under Chapter 29 of the IOC Charter. Chapters 30 and 57 of the IOC Charter grant the international federation for a given sport the right to set the technical rules for competitions in that sport. So IDSF gets to set all the rules for DanceSport including styling and technique. The reasons for having an international federation recognized by IOC, even though the sport is not included in the Olympics, are 1) because it is a requirement for ultimately becoming a medal sport and 2) IOC believes strongly in furthering sports on the international level. DanceSport will NOT be a medal sport in Sydney in 2000 or in Athens in 2004. Under chapter 52 of the IOC Charter, sports must receive medal programme inclusion at least 7 years before the games begin, which means the deadline for the IOC Session (members) to vote on inclusion in the 2008 Olympics is September 2001. IDSF is planning on submitting an application for inclusion in 2008. It appears that the biggest hurdle that DanceSport faces is the sport versus art distinction. The IOC recently held a roundtable forum on Sports and Culture. One of the general themes was that art was used to celebrate the sports - and that both art and sport form part of the Olympic Culture. Also, the panel members seemed to say that sports are inherently artisitic, but that which is artistic is not necessarily sporting. A number of commentators tried to define art versus sport, but they seem to have generally failed, and resigned themselves to "I know sport (or art) when I see it."

    18. A FINAL BLOW TO CHESS DRUG TESTING
IOC is reducing rather than increasing the number of olympic sports, and even popular sports of a physical nature such as bowling, racquetball, water skiing
    http://www.chessnews.org/blow.htm
A FINAL BLOW TO CHESS DRUG TESTING? The idea that chessplayers should be subjected to drug testing in order for the game to become part of the Olympics appears to be fading fast. Earlier this year, the U.S. Olympic Committee rejected chess as a sport, delivering a blow to support for drug testing in the United States. Now the International Olympic Committee has likewise refused to accept chess and other "mind sports" as part of the Olympics. The IOC is reducing rather than increasing the number of Olympic sports, and even popular sports of a physical nature such as bowling, racquetball, water skiing and squash have now been rejected. It should now be clear to even the drug testing diehards that the chances for chess to become part of the Olympics any time in the foreseeable future are nil. It is time to stop the debate and give up on FIDE's ridiculous idea that mandating drug testing now in various tournaments will lead to eventual recognition of chess as an Olympic sport. Congratulations to Executive Director Frank Niro for being the first USCF representative to openly challenge FIDE's ridiculous drug testing policy. Hopefully our Executive Board and FIDE representatives will follow Niro's lead. It is long overdue for USCF to stand up for what is right at FIDE meetings, and I believe that the result is likely to be the end of the idea that drug testing is needed in chess.
