Team Handball First Appeared: 1936 (men); 1976 (women) by Mike Morrison Despite the fact that South Korea won the women's gold medal in both and , and that over eight million people from over 150 countries play it, handball is largely considered a European-only sport. In fact, ask many Americans what they think handball is, and they'll probably describe a game similar to racquetball with two competitors slapping a small ball off a wall with their hands. Not so.
    Did You Know?
The NBA Houston Rockets center Hakeem Olajuwon began his athletic career and unknowingly honed his basketball skills by playing handball in Nigeria as a child.
The easiest way to describe handball is, "soccer with the hands instead of the feet." Much like soccer, it can be both physical and fast, with shots being thrown at speeds approaching 65 miles per hour. The sport used to be played on a large turf field with 11 players per side, but has more recently been moved indoors and played with with seven players, which has sped up the game even more. The object is to score more goals than the other team by throwing a ball (somewhat smaller than a soccer ball) into a D-shaped net. Games consist of two 30-minute halves. Players can only take three steps after catching the ball and can only hold the ball for three seconds before they must either pass, dribble (like basketball), or shoot. A defender can use his/her hands or body to block a ball but can't use the feet or lower legs (except for goalies). Like soccer, free throws, corner throws, and penalty throws become an integral part of the game.

This program emphasizes the study of movement as a force in one's life. Just as the forces of intellect and imagination give meaning and support to self development, so too can movement. For this to occur, however, people must have the skills to move effectively and efficiently. They must also have knowledge and attitudes about how participation in movement can give added meaning to life, help fulfill one's potential, and counter-balance stresses of today's world. Courses have these goals as their objectives and will include readings, reports, exams, and field experiences which will give students an opportunity to develop skills by participation in various sports.

Athens 2004: The Flame Is Lit
25 Mar 2004 13:56
In a tradtional ceremony held at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, GRE, the Olympic flame was lit today, March 25. It will now be carried across all five continents on a global torch relay - a first in Olympic history - before it is brought to the Athens Stadium on August 13. 78,000 kilometers of its journey will take the flame on a global tour to all past Olympic cities and - for the first time ever - to Africa and South America. A total of 260 million people will have the opportunity to see the flame, as it is carried and passed from one torchbearer to another in their cities. 'More than ever, this Olympic torch relay will convey a message of peace and friendship among peoples, and, in doing so, respect the tradition of the Olympic Truce or Ekecheiria , like in the Games of Antiquity,' IOC President Dr. Jacques Rogge commented on the premiere.

Customer Reviews This book has NOTHING to do with training for Squash or any other racqet sport. The only mention of squash and Racquetball is on the first 3 pages (and on the cover page). The rest of the book is just common basic boddyboulding techniques. They have made 30 "different" books "aimed" at different sports, however I'm certain that these books are IDENTICAL except for the 3 first pages (or maybee even them).I have never felt so much cheated !They state on the first pages that one should follow the shown exersize sets on page "ix" and page no. "x" however these sets are for everything else than squash/raquetball. They state that you should do many reps (10-20) But this way you just train endurance/strength and NOT speed which are very important in raquet sports.I am returning this book by using my 30 days returns rights Look for related books on other categories Physical education and training Racket Sports Racquetball Squash ...
