    Squash Bids for the
    2012 Olympic Games

The (IOC) made an extremely important announcement on 8th April 2004 concerning the forward plans for deciding which sports will be on the programme of the Olympic Games in 2012. After the Athens Olympics of 2004, the IOC Olympic Programme Commission will start a process of evaluation of all the sports currently on the programme and, most importantly for Squash, a “certain number of recognised International Federations”. We hope and believe that Squash will be one of a small number of Recognised Sports selected for this review.
After Athens, the selected sports will be asked by the IOC to complete a questionnaire that covers a sport’s history and tradition, popularity, universality, image, athlete’s health, presentation, development and cost, which must be submitted by 10 November 2004. The Commission will evaluate the responses to these questionnaires and present the findings to the IOC Executive Board in April 2005. The decisions they make will form the basis of a recommendation on the programme for 2012, to be approved by the IOC Session in Singapore in June 2005.

This year, 1996, marks the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic movement. In this spirit of celebration we acknowledge and recognize the names and publications of more than 50,000 historical and contemporary scholars, linked by the thread of a united, common interest in athletics, sport, and recreation. Athletics, games, leisure pursuits, physical education, play activities, and sports lie at the junction between the humanities, social sciences, and biological-medical sciences. While athletic activities most likely had their origin in military training, it is difficult in modern times to separate each theme: athletics from games, games from leisure pursuits and physical education, physical education from play, play from recreation, or recreation from sports. During past and present centuries research on human athletics, games, play, recreation, and sports has been conducted by a broad range of scientists, whether dietitians, nutritionists, physiologists, or physicians. Research on these themes also has been conducted by a broad range of scholars representing the humanities and social sciences, whether anthropologists, artists, classicists, dancers, economists, geographers, historians, musicians, psychologists, social theorists, or sociologists.

Karch Kiraly is to the sport of volleyball what these modern-day icons represent in their respective sports. “Having Karch Kiraly join the advisory staff of the Association of United Wallyball Players (AUWP), the official governing body of the sport of wallyball, is one of the crowning moments in the history of the sport,” states Joe Garcia, inventor of wallyball and executive eirector of the AUWP. “One of our primary goals is to develop a grass roots program to grow the sport. Karch also understands that the similarities the two sports enjoy - such as basic volleyball rules, ball handling techniques and the availability of wallyball/racquetball courts - can help both sports work together more effectively to attract new players and help them improve their skills.” Wallyball is a version of volleyball played on a racquetball court with two, three or four players per team. Play and scoring are similar to volleyball; however, the side walls become part of the playing area and contacting two or more walls constitutes a fault or side-out. There are several million players worldwide who play wallyball in health clubs, YMCAs, and college intramural programs.

Students in the Pfeiffer dining room enjoy a dress meal served by elegantly attired student waiters. In the early years, the students and faculty dined in Old Sem. From 1885 to 1930, most students who took their meals on campus ate in Bowman Hall. After Pfeiffer Hall was opened in 1930, half the students were assigned to eat there while the other half continued to dine at Bowman. This arrangement continued until The Commons opened in January 1966. The Commons, the central gathering place for students, features large dining areas, a short-order counter, small private dining or meeting rooms, classrooms, a bookstore, a pool and game machines room, and student mail boxes, all centered around a two-story atrium space for lectures, debates, and performances.

    Racquetball History
Racquetball was invented in 1949 by Joe Sobek, a tennis pro from Greenwich, Connecticut, who combined the rules of squash and handball to create a new game dubbed paddle racket. At present, over 7.5 million people in the United States play regularly, compared to less than 50,000 in 1970 It is estimated that there are approximately 15 million players participating in 87 countries world wide. Racquet frames have undergone significant changes in size and composition, from the original strung wooden paddle, to aluminum alloy (1971), fiberglass (1972), graphite (1978), boron (1982) and finally titanium (1997) Of course many racquets today are composites of two or more of these materials. Racquetball - it's a sport for the millennium and beyond... truly a sport for a lifetime. You can play day or night, rain or shine, male or female, young or old. If you are not playing today and you enjoy the thrill of competition while benefiting from the results of an outstanding aerobic workout; racquetball is for you!
    In more detail
The game of racquetball evolved from other racket sports like French court tennis, Spanish Jai alai in the seventeenth century, Irish immigrants introduction of handball to the United States in the 1900s, English squash in the 1850, and the British game of Rackets played in the early 1800s. The evolutions of these various racket sport was inevitably racquetball in the 1950s.

The author does a good job of identifying the different aspects of the game and describes each well. The various shot drills and court diagrams are also a great learning tool. Anyone who wants to improve their racquetball and follows this manual can't help but get better. This is a worthy book to have around. It includes many drills to help you home in, especially useful are the "what youre doing wrong" sections.
