    THE ROMANI PROJECT
The ROMANI PROJECT considers itself a contribution to the preservation of culture and identity by codifying and developing teaching methods for the language varieties of the Austrian Roma. Due to the assimilation pressure the Romani - represented in Austria by several varieties -, which belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European languages, is threatened with extinction. Thus, not only from the point of view of the native speakers, codifying is essential in order to reduce the probability of the language being lost and consequently becoming extinct in the future. Reflections on Zionism From a Dissident Jew by Tim Wise
So it's official. The U.S. has withdrawn from the World Conference on Racism, being held in Durban, South Africa. And though the cynical and historically observant might suspect that this decision was merely in keeping with our long standing unwillingness to deal with the legacy of racism on a global scale, the official reason is more circumscribed. Namely, the mid-conference pullout was intended to register displeasure at various delegates who are pushing resolutions condemning Israeli treatment of Palestinians, and Zionism itself: the ideology of Jewish nationalism that led to the founding of Israel in 1948. As the conference speeds towards a no doubt controversial conclusion, perhaps it would be worthwhile to ask just what all the fuss is about? Although one can argue with the claim made by some that Zionism and racism are synonymous especially given the amorphous definition of "race" which makes such a position forever and always a matter of semantics it is difficult to deny that Zionism, in practice if not theory, amounts to ethnic chauvinism, colonial ethnocentrism, and national oppression.

    New racism declaration unveiled
DURBAN, South Africa (CNN) Host South Africa has presented a compromise draft declaration on the Middle East to try to save the U.N. conference against racism from collapse. A spokesman for the European Union which has been helping to broker a deal said that the wording put forward by South Africa "provided an acceptable basis for negotiation" but gave no further details. Earlier, the 15-nation EU bloc had said it would like 24 hours to consider the revised statement. There was fury when a previous draft talked of Israel as a racist state. The United States and Israel then walked out of the U.N. conference saying it had been "hijacked" by Israel's enemies. The European Union also made clear the language was unacceptable. Every individual on earth has his completing causes; consequently an individual with perfect causes becomes perfect, and another with imperfect causes remains imperfect, as the negro who is able to receive nothing more than the human shape and speech in its least developed form. Judah Halevi Kuzari (I, 4-6) [ A History of Jewish Philosophy in the Middle Ages , Colette Sirat, Cambridge University Press, 1985, 1990, p.2] Their qualities of character, moreover, are close to those of dumb animals. It has ever been reported that most of the Negroes of the first [climatic] zone dwell in caves and thickets, eat herbs, live in savage isolation and do not congregate, and eat each other. The same applies to the Slavs. The reason for this is that their remoteness from being temperate produces in them a disposition and character similar to those of the dumb animals, and they become correspondingly remote from humanity. The Muqaddimah, An Introduction to History , Franz Rosenthal translation, abridged and edited by N.J. Dawood [Bollingen Series, Princeton University Press, 1967, p.59] Be it known to you, that the Traffic in Slaves is a matter on which all Sects and Nations have agreed from the time of the sons of Adam, on whom be the Peace of God, up to this day and we are not aware of its being prohibited by the Laws of any Sect, and no one need ask this question [i.e. whether the trade in slaves be lawful], the same being manifest to both high and low and requires no more demonstration than the light of day.

    Introduction
Environmental racism can be defined as the intentional siting of hazardous waste sites, landfills, incinerators, and polluting industries in communities inhabited mainly by African-American, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians, migrant farm workers, and the working poor. Minorities are particularly vulnerable because they are perceived as weak and passive citizens who will not fight back against the poisoning of their neighborhoods in fear that it may jeopardize jobs and economic survival. The landmark study, Toxic Wastes and Race in the United States (Commission for Racial Justice, United Church of Christ 1987), described the extent of environmental racism and the consequences for those who are victims of polluted environments. The study revealed that: Race was the most significant variable associated with the location of hazardous waste sites. The greatest number of commercial hazardous facilities were located in communities with the highest composition of racial and ethnic minorities.

U.S. Catholic Bishops Pastoral Letter on Racism, 1979 Racism is an evil which endures in our society and in our Church. Despite apparent advances and even significant changes in the last two decades, the reality of racism remains. In large part it is only external appearances which have changed. In 1958 we spoke out against the blatant forms of racism that divided people through discriminatory laws and enforced segregation. We pointed out the moral evil that denied human persons their dignity as children of God and their God-given rights. (1) A decade later in a second pastoral letter we again underscored the continuing scandal of racism called for decisive action to eradicate it from our society.(2) We recognize and applaud the readiness of many Americans to make new strides forward in reducing and eliminating prejudice against minorities. We are convinced that the majority of Americans realize that racial discrimination is both unjust and unworthy of this nation. We do not deny that changes have been made, that laws have been passed, that policies have been implemented. We do not deny that the ugly external features of racism which marred our society have in part been eliminated. But neither can it be denied that too often what has happened has only a covering over, not a fundamental change. Today the sense of urgency has yielded to an apparent acceptance of the status quo. The climate of crisis engendered by demonstrations, protest, and confrontation has given way to a mood of indifference; and other issues occupy our attention.

    Israel may attend racism talks
DURBAN, South Africa Israel has said it may reverse its decision to boycott the U.N. conference on racism, beginning in Durban on Friday. Israel had previously threatened to boycott the talks unless language critical of Israel was removed from official conference documents. The announcement comes after weeks of negotiations by U.S. officials to remove phrases from official documents that equate Zionism belief in a Jewish state with racism and single out Israel as a "racist" occupying power. U.S. State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said on Wednesday the full "extent and nature" of the participation by the American delegation would depend on whether the language was eliminated from the conference documents. Israel is the foremost victim of the West's forgetfulness; the Arab world has been its chief beneficiary. And nothing illustrates this truth more neatly than the popularized version of Edward Said's celebrated concept of Orientalism. Orientalism is based on the astonishing premise that it is wrong for the West to try to imagine what life is like in the East, because (guess what!) the way the West imagined the East often differed from how the East really was, thereby presenting a distorted view of the East. But distorted by whose mirror? Did Said mean to suggest that the Arab world understood the Arab world because they were Arabs, and that however they decided to characterize themselves must be taken at face value and put beyond question? Would you turn around and do this with Americans? Would you endorse the idea that Americans alone have the right to characterize themselves, and that it is wrong for other cultures even to try to understand ours?
