The late sixties revolutionised the world in many ways and its ideals were even reflected in Grand Prix racing. The arrival of the Cosworth DFV at the time of the Paris student revolts marked F1's own emancipation as youthful, exhuberant underdog garagistes finally found a powerhorse to match their kit-car machines, enabling them to enjoy unparalleled freedom. Then, in that hippie summer of '69, came three more technical innovations, of which one was to change the face of F1 and two went belly-up within one season. The one least likely to succeed, if only judging by the flimsy and uncharismatic looks of those

US cyclist who, just eighteen months after returning to competition following a life-threatening battle against cancer, won the 1999 Tour de France. In 2002 he won his fourth consecutive Tour.
    Career highlights
Tour de France: World Road Race Championship: Olympic Games: bronze 2000 Tour DuPont: Born in Plano, Texas, he showed early promise as a swimmer and triathlete, although when he left high school he was already a member of the US national cycling squad. He turned professional shortly after competing for the USA in the 1992 Olympic Games. In 1993, his first full season on the professional circuit, he gained his first stage victory in the Tour de France, and became only the second US cyclist after Greg LeMond to win the World Road Race title. Diagnosed as suffering from testicular cancer in October 1996, and given only a 50% chance of survival, he underwent chemotherapy and several operations before returning to racing early in 1998. In his 1998 comeback season he proved that he was still able to compete at the highest level, winning four races and achieving a top five finish in the Tour of Spain. His autobiography, It's Not About the Bike (2000), detailed his illness and subsequent recovery.

There is a continuing trend for sites to change to a different server. In most cases there will be an automatic link to the new site, though this is not always the case. In some cases there may be a change in the format so that links to specific pages may show a 'Not found' sign. Add to this the growing practice of making sites more complex to follow the general trend in computer technology and the poor modeller who simply wants information is having a harder and harder time. If you have noted that the number of links on this page grows less, or that some well-known sites are missing, you now know why. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, she helped tend invalid British soldiers when she was only 12 years old. At 18 she visited her relatives in Scotland and discovered a taste for adventure. In 1836 she married Nelson's godson Edwin Horatio Seacole, but was soon widowed. Her interest in nursing started early and she went to Latin America to tend to patients with cholera, where she devised her own medicines. She also learned to tend knife and gunshot wounds. She heard about the Crimean war and immediately set out for London. Aged almost 50, she planned to go to the front to use her medical skills to save the lives of men as she had done in Kingston. However, on application to the War Office, she was turned down without explanation. She heard that Florence Nightingale was recruiting nurses but was never granted an interview. She approached the Crimean Fund but was again refused. In desperation she made her own way across 3,000 miles to the Black Sea to set up a hotel similar to the one her family had run in Jamaica. Within a few months the 'British Hotel' was selling basic provisions and wholesome food, with Mary treating the sick and injured. Like Nightingale, she believed strongly in hygiene and ventilation, and also nursed in the Crimean War (paying her own passage). Here she worked in the field and treated disease, taking a more active role than the Nightingale nurses who did more basic tasks such as undoing bandages, washing wounds, spoon feeding and comforting the dying. She was Britain's first black nurse. She was commended by Queen Victoria. On her return she wrote her autobiography.

Fallen Heroes of Sprint Car Racing
Part of the excitement of sprint car racing is the danger. Clip another car's wheels, or enter a corner too hard, and you may find yourself upside down in short order. More often than not, the driver climbs out of the wreck unaided, and returns the next week or later that same night. It wasn't always this way. Sprint cars used to routinely maim and kill their drivers. Modern safety devices such as full face helmets, roll bars, multi-point harnesses, fire suits, and fuel cells have made most routine accidents survivable. Major advances in medicine and rescue techniques have saved many who would not have survived similar injuries in the past. But sometimes the worst happens, and no amount of safety equipment or medical technology can spare the driver. Or even more tragically, the driver survives, but is no longer able to drive, or even to care for himself. This page is a tribute to the men and women whose lives were claimed or changed by the sport they loved. I regret that I don't have more time and space to post the many tributes that have been sent to me, but write me if you wish to contribute. I hope to have more on display soon.
