ATLAS F1 Volume 7, Issue 15 Email to Friend Printable Version The Bookworm Critique DAN GURNEY:
    THE ULTIMATE RACER

    By Karl Ludvigsen.
    Published by Haynes.
    by Mark Glendenning,
    Australia
Karl Ludvigsen's string of driver biographies shouldn't need much of an introduction. All have enjoyed a relatively high profile, both in the Atlas F1 forums and elsewhere, and one, 'Juan Manuel Fangio: Motor Racing's Grand Master', has featured in this space previously. This study of the career of Dan Gurney is the fourth in a series that, along with Fangio, has also featured Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart, and was recently expanded to include Alberto Ascari. Dan Gurney is a particularly welcome subject for such a book, partly because his impact upon the sport is possibly under-appreciated amongst Formula One's general fan base. Gurney is respected almost to the point of reverence by those sensitive to motor racing's history, but for some reason he seems to have made less of an impression amongst followers of the modern version of the sport. I did a quick poll amongst some friends who are casual Formula One fans. All knew Moss and Fangio, and Stewart's consistent profile within the sport through the years has cemented his fame amongst the newer generation, but quite a few people either knew Gurney only by name, or did not know of him at all. If this book goes even a small way toward changing this, then that alone will prove its worth. Not that much proof of the value of this book is really necessary, because by and large Ludvigsen has done an admirable job. 'The Ultimate Racer' follows Gurney's full professional career. Relatively little space is allocated to the early years of Gurney's life, and virtually none is devoted to his life after racing. But for brief excursions back and forwards through time, the book traces a chronological path through the years that Gurney spent in the cockpits of sports cars, Formula One cars, Indy cars, stock cars, and pretty much anything else that he came across.

[ Related articles ] We somehow guessed who number one was going to be. But we didn't expect this close a battle for the other top spots. After finishing up on the impressive gaggle of votes we even got a tie for second place, making this quite an exciting race to the end. A few trends here: the 8W audience generally voted in favour of accomplishment ahead of promise, while also appreciating continued genius above flashes of brilliance. In that respect it would indeed be harder to reward the pre-Nuvolari, pre-Rosemeyer dare-devils since it is hard to truly measure their accomplishments against their successors, as their significant victories were much smaller in number - although usually bigger in margin. But then numbers are remembered, while the margin of victory is often forgotten... Anyway, thank you for taking part and turning this into an interesting exercise for us. So here's how the poll went:

    Jack Avery
John Gilman Avery (1873-1927), known as 'Jack', was one of Urban's closest associates, being his friend, brother-in-law and camera operator for many years. Jack Avery and Urban first met when the latter was working in a stationery store in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Urban was becoming interested in Jack's half-sister Julia, whom he later married. Urban made a promise to do for the young Avery what he could, and when he became manager of the Warwick Trading Company in Britain, he invited him to join the company, which Avery did in 1899. He was appointed cameraman and assistant manager, and became one of Urban's most reliable workers, as well as a close friend. He naturally joined Urban at the Charles Urban Trading Company in 1903, and subsequently became manager of Kineto Limited. He later joined the Trans-Atlantic Company before trading under his own name as a film broker. Joseph Baucus

(Revised 1990) Section I o The following points are meant primarily as guidelines to members of the racing media. However, they also serve as a guide to promoters concerning the AARWBA position on the points noted. 1. The racing reporter's obligation to report fairly, objectively and completely is to accurately inform the interested race fan (paying public) of the activities before, during, and after a motor sports event and responsibly support the sport, the promoter and the competitors. 2. No responsible member of the media ever will intentionally falsely report or distort. Although mistakes can and do occur, any member found to be intentionally filing misleading, false or grossly biased reports will have his or her AARWBA membership suspended or revoked. 3. An AARWBA membership card is not and has no reason to be Carte Blanche for accreditation at any track. It simply identifies the bearer as a professional motor sports journalist. 4. Requests for special considerations (freebies, extra credentials, special parking) are just thatrequests. There is no obligation on the part of the promoter to grant them and rejection should not affect the media members treatment of the promoter.

The series, organised by SEAT UK and the BRDC is designed to help Britain produce the next Johnny Herbert – while the current Johnny Herbert, who has tested and raced the 250bhp SEAT Leon Cupra R, is very supportive of the new championship. "It is good for British motorsport that we have something like this where we can actually try and produce British stars of the future," says the former Formula 1 Grand Prix driver. SEAT Spain introduced their similar "Supercopa" chamoionship last year which achieved great success. By mid 2002, SEAT UK bought two cars for a selection of drivers to test to gain feedback. The positive feedback convinced SEAT UK to give the greenlight for a dedicated British series. SEATCupra.net will be present in the series both from the spectator banks and on track, where our sponsored Driver, ex BTCC Production front runner Spencer Marsh will be competing in Car No 10. Spencer will be reporting on the series giving a valueable exclusive insight into the series.
