FACTS ABOUT RABIES
  • Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system. It kills almost any mammal or human that gets sick from it. The rabies virus is mainly in the saliva and brain of rabid animals. It can be transmitted through a bite or by getting saliva or brain tissue in a wound or in the eye or mouth. Only mammals get rabies; birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians do not. Skunks, bats, foxes, raccoons, dogs, cats, and some farm animals are most likely to get rabies. Rabbits, squirrels, rats and mice, and pets like gerbils and hamsters seldom get it. Rabies can be prevented in cats, dogs, ferrets, and some livestock with a rabies vaccination. For most wild and exotic animals, there are no rabies vaccines available that have been shown to protect them. At present, there is an oral wildlife rabies vaccine available only to State or Federal Rabies Control Programs. The use of an oral rabies vaccine may decrease the number of rabid animals, but will not eliminate the need for vaccination of pets or other domestic animals.

RABIES AND HUMANS
  • Because of improved rabies vaccination programs for pets and better treatment for people who are bitten, rabies cases among humans in this country are rare. The best way to prevent the spread of rabies to humans is by keeping pets properly vaccinated.

Update T he Wolf Dog Coalition submitted all wolf and wolf dog vaccination records we had acquired to the USDA in November of 1998. We were informed in January of 1999 that the USDA considered the data significant and sufficient to allow them to make a decision about vaccine approval for wolves and wolf dog crosses. In February, after a thorough analysis, USDA made the determination that all vaccines currently approved for dogs should also be approved for wolves and wolf dog crosses. The mechanism by which wolves and wolf dogs would gain vaccine approval was with an amendment to Title 9 Code of Federal Regulations. The amendment, in essence, declared that all vaccines are approved for any member of the species Canis lupus.

THE BIG SCAMRABIES VACCINATION
By: Dr. John Fudens, D.V.M.
I would like to give you, the reader, the truth about the so called required vaccinations, particularly rabies. There are two basic forms of law. One is the legal Constitutional and Common law that this country was founded on, and the other is "colorable" law passed by Administrative agencies/bureaucrats who have been given so called authority to pass laws. Black's Law Dictionary 5 th Edition defines colorable law as "That which is in appearance only, and not in reality, what purports to be, hence counterfeit, feigned, having the appearance of truth." Yes, I study the law, am a paralegal, and have an extensive law library. So any and all mandatory rabies vaccination programs are colorable law, in that they have been passed and mandated upon the pet owning public by certain vested interest groups. Who are these groups? First and foremost are veterinarians, in general, and veterinarian medical organizations. Second are the local animal control personnel, bureaucrats and politicians. What are their reasons? GREED, POWER AND CONTROL. Both these large powerful interest groups stand to benefit greatly by having rabies mandated by colorable law. Veterinarians receive a large percentage of both their gross income and profit from vaccines given in the office. On average vaccines cost 60 to 95 cents per dose and are charged to the client at $15 to $25 per injection and substantially more in the large cities. Therefore, if veterinarians lobby to have a colorable law passed to give rabies vaccine every year that enhances their financial picture.

125. Bats And Humans
Like all mammals, bats can contract rabies; a deadly viral disease of the central nervous system. rabies is a virus that any mammal can contract.
http://www.batconservation.org/content/batsandhumans/batsandhumans.htm
What is Rabies? Misconceptions Rabies incubation in humans is anywhere from 10 days to several years. Rabies is a virus that any mammal can contract. In almost all cases the virus is passed on through a bite from the infected animal. Rabies is a potentially fatal disease unless treated quickly. There are many rumors about bats and rabies, one of these rumors is that all bats carry rabies. Bats are NOT carriers of rabies, they can get rabies, but they die of it just like any other animal. Bats can get the rabies virus, but the incidence of bats and rabies is very low, usually only about one half of one percent of bats tested, test positive for the virus. If you take into consideration that people have a much higher chance of getting attacked by a dog, falling down a flight of stairs, or being struck by lightning and dying than dying of a bat bite you can see that rabies is rare. Chances are even better of winning your state lottery, than getting bitten by a bat with rabies. Here are a few notable diseases reported in 1995 in the United States: Chlamydia, 477,638; Gonorrhea, 392,848; AIDS, 71,547; Hepatitis, 41,000; Lyme Disease, 11,700; Syphilis, 68,953; Salmonellosis, 45,970; Whopping Cough, 5,137; E. Rabies and Feral Cats
Facts and Control Much of the U.S. is currently experiencing a wildlife rabies epidemic. Wildlife managers, animal control agencies and the animal protection community face important decisions on how best to control this disease. Feral cats are all too often caught in the middle of misguided efforts to protect human health by exterminating wild, feral, and stray animals. These efforts are not only cruel, but ineffective, costly, and difficult to implement. Alley Cat Allies promotes compassionate non-lethal solutions to problems resulting from human/wildlife interactions. Scientific evidence from around the world confirms the long term viability of non-lethal population and disease control through sterilization, birth control, and oral vaccination of wildlife. These methods represent an effective and humane approach to the rabies epidemic. Rabies and Humans
Rabies is an acute viral infection of the central nervous system. Of all the zoonotic diseases,(1) it is one of the most feared and misunderstood even though its threat to humans in the U.S. is very small. Left untreated, rabies is deadly, producing excruciatingly painful symptoms and usually fatal. Media accounts also tend to sensationalize and reinforce popular misconceptions. Much unnecessary anxiety and fear could be relieved by understanding that rabies in the U.S. is primarily a disease of wildlife which can be controlled, and its threat to humans and companion animals minimized.
Most cases are transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. All animal bites should be immediately flushed and cleansed with soap and water, then given prompt medical attention. Rabies is treatable when caught early, before symptoms appear. Exposure risk can be further minimized by following a few simple precautions.

    Dolphin With Rabies
    Life on beautiful Cape Cod.
Thursday, June 10, 2004 Recently Seen I've been indulging myself in my favorite genre, supernatural films that have a strong psychological element. Don't Look Now
I see why this made such a splash when it first came out. A British husband and wife have recently lost their daughter and are living in Venice. Then, there's indications that the daughter's spirit has returned. Or has it? I'm being extremely vague because I wish I'd known much less about this movie before watching it, much of the impact is greatly diminished by knowing even non-spoiler details. Mostly strong first two-thirds, with a lot of thought put into the symbolic use of color and camera effects. (I am a sucker for visuals). Creepy and atmospheric in a very "normal" way, the creep occurs in the mundane details, not the extraordinary. Unfortunately, the movie has a very weak ending and overall, the whole was less than the sum of the parts. (I'm reminded of the Legend of Hell House , another well-done horror movie from the same era with a weak ending.) But, if you appreciate movies that take horror and supernatural seriously and not as a throw-away genre, you should probably see it once. Just don't blame me if you say, "That's it?" at the end. What is rabies and what causes it?
Rabies is an infectious disease that spreads from animals to humans. The rabies virus causes the disease by infecting nerves in animals and people. The rabies virus travels to the brain (through nerves inside the brain), the virus reproduces, and then it travels back through the nerves to most parts of the body. Eventually, the virus reaches the salivary glands where it is released into the saliva in the mouth. By this time, the disease has usually damaged the brain, sometimes producing violent behaviour. It eventually causes death. How long does it take for rabies to develop?
