Lost Dog - What to do Though we all would like to think we are responsible dog owners, accidents can happen to even the best of us. A child leaves a gate or door ajar. A leash snaps or collar slips. You are in a car accident and your dog escapes. Fire, flood, storm can all end in the escape of a pet. There are steps you can take to help prevent a loss:

Announcements
The word exotics comprises a multitude of non dog and cat species. Animal Health Center attempts to administer care and medical attention to all of God's creatures. We often see rabbits, guinea pigs, snakes, iguanas, birds, and ferrets. We are quick to point out to exotic owners that our desire is to administer the care we can and refer cases that we feel should be seen by someone with more knowledge.

Bunnies As Pets

Bunnies For Easter? (Photo: CBS/The Early Show)
(CBS) Many well-meaning parents buy a rabbit for their kids, only to surrender that bunny to a shelter weeks later because the rabbit requires more care than they are prepared to give, or the animal displays behaviors that they don't know how to handle.
While rabbits can make great pets, it is important to have the right living situation, be fully educated about proper rabbit care, and be ready to take care of this pet for up to 10 years. The Early Show resident veterinarian Debbye Turner explains.
Rabbits are not appropriate pets for very young children, since they are prey animals in the wild. Rabbits are naturally cautious and timid, so a boisterous child would only serve to stress-out and frighten a rabbit.
They also have very powerful back and leg muscles with fragile bones. If handled improperly, a rabbit can easily break his leg or back. In fact, while very social, rabbits don't necessarily like to be held and cuddled a lot. One veterinarian described the ideal rabbit owner as someone who enjoys observing as much as handling. And owners can't be too bothered by rabbits' natural tendency to chew and dig. Here is what you need to know about caring for pet rabbits Housing: A rabbit's cage should be 3 to 4 feet long. While many rabbit breeders use wire mesh at the bottom of their cages, this can cause significant damage to the rabbit's feet. It is best to use cardboard that can be removed and discarded or just a hard surface that can be thoroughly cleaned.

Who're you calling a scaredy cat? Your new rabbit might be a bit timid at first. Talk to him so he'll get to know your voice. After a couple of days, handfeed him some pellets. Make sure he's not disturbed by loud noises. To pick up your rabbit, place one hand on his neck and scoop up his bottom. Hold him secure near your chest. He'll probably start to love this special time with you, but if he squirms, put him down. Every day is play day for your rabbit! Let yours out to explore and get himself used to your world. You'll have to supervise, of course, and please be sure to bunny-proof the room firstthat means putting any loose electrical wires or anything else he could (but shouldn't!) chew out of sight. Your pet may even follow you around to see what you're doing. He should have about two to three hours of exercise outside his cage every day. Run, rabbit, run! You can let your rabbit play in your backyard when the weather is nice, but ONLY if you supervise and if you have a fence. Make sure that neighborhood animals can't get near your bunny. Fluff-n-stuff: Your bunny will enjoy a good brushing, especially if he's really hairy, like an Angora or Cashmere. Brush from the back of the head down to his tail. Use slow, even strokes. Don't be surprised if you notice him licking himself clean like a cat!

Read specialized articles from veterinarians, kids, humor, and more! Rabbit Information Rabbit Care Daily Rabbit Care: DietA rabbit's diet should be made up of good quality pellets, fresh hay (grass or timothy), water and fresh vegetables. Pellets should be fresh and high in fiber (at least 18%). Do not use pellets sold in plastic bags or cardboard boxes that pet shops and grocery stores sell since these may have been sitting in warehouses for a long time. Fresh pellets can be purchased at feed stores and some pet supply stores in bulk. Even fresh pellets can go stale after 2 months, so just buy 2 months worth at a time. Pellets should be limited in amount, as the rabbit grows older. To replace the nutritional value without the calories, increase the vegetable serving. Vegetables should be fresh and crisp. Look for a selection of different varieties of dark, green leafy veggies and root veggies such as carrots. Stay away from beans and rhubarb. For a complete list of veggies please click on "Diet".

"As a responsible breeder, I refuse to accept responsibility for creating pet overpopulation. And I do not buy the illogical argument that the birth of a healthy, wanted purebred litter displaces shelter animals. If you raise two happy, healthy children who are much loved and cared for, are you responsible for a battered child in the home of a substance abuser and a child in the third world who is forced into slave labor or who sleeps on the street? You may wish to help those children, too, but the care you provide to your own takes nothing away from them." by Margaret Anne Cleek (Animal People)
