Executive Summary
Pet food and pet care registers steady growth in 2003
Pet food and pet care in Portugal is expected to register current value growth of nearly 6% in 2003, bringing sales to a total value of EUR165 million. This represents a slight downturn against the previous year but is nevertheless a steady rate of growth.
Sales as a whole are being affected by a slowdown in volume growth. Economic difficulties in Portugal and slower growth in pet populations largely caused this. However, it was partly compensated for in value terms by unit price increases and a greater focus on premium products, as consumers are encouraged to buy products with added value and quality.
New products are becoming available that tend to the increasingly specific needs of pets in Portugal. Similarly, Portuguese pet owners are becoming more aware of their pets' dietary needs and health requirements, as well as having a greater affectionate bond with their domestic companions, leading to a diversification of products and a tendency towards more premium purchases. Added-value products such as vitamin-enhanced food, single-serve dishes and a greater variety of variants within each brand helped keep value sales positive in 2002, despite economic difficulties in the country and poor growth in the pet population.
Dog and cat food still strongest in 2003

Rabbits may be easy to love, but they're not quite as easy to care for. Rabbits are social creatures and wonderful companions to people who take the time to learn about their needs. To learn about providing care for these adorable creatures, check out books and web sites on rabbit care. This set of quick reminders will give you the basics. Want to learn more? Get the Pets for Life e-newsletter. Enter e-mail address: 1. Help Them Hop to It Just because rabbits are little doesn't mean they don't need room to roam. A cage or a run for a six-pound rabbit should be at least 18 inches high, 24 inches wide, and 24 inches deep. Cages with wire flooring are hard on rabbits' feet, which do not have protective pads like those of dogs and cats. If you place your rabbit in a wire cage, be sure to layer the floor with cardboard or paper. Place a cardboard box in the cage so the bunny has a comfortable place to hide, and respect the animals' need for quiet time. (Rabbits usually sleep during the day and night, becoming playful at dawn and dusk.) Always house rabbits indoors and maintain comfortable room temperatures, as rabbits do not tolerate extreme temperatures. 2. Please Put Litter in Its Place

    Behavior:
    Litter Training Your Rabbit
You may be surprised at how easy it is to train your rabbit to use her litter box. By nature, rabbits tend to go in the same spot. You may have noticed your rabbit backing up into a corner and lifting her tail. Many times, it’s as simple as identifying where she likes to go and putting a litter box in that spot. However, there are many factors that can make or break your rabbit’s litter box habits. The simple choices you make, such as the type of litter to use, are crucial to your rabbit’s health, as well. Spay and neuter first
Spaying and neutering your rabbit is essential to successful litter training. Unaltered mature rabbits are extremely territorial and typically mark territory with urine and fecal droppings. Spaying and neutering can curb territorial marking behavior considerably. In addition, you will rule out any chance of unwanted babies and significantly decrease the chance of ovarian cancer in females. Rabbits need to be sexually mature to be spayed and neutered. The minimum age is about 6 months old. Rabbits adopted from shelters are typically spayed and neutered before you take them home. If you have an unaltered rabbit on your hands, be sure to choose a veterinarian with extensive experience performing these operations on rabbits.

Rabbits can be kept as pets where it is impractical to keep other animals such as dogs and cats. A rabbit makes little or no noise and if properly looked after, it does not smell. HOUSING They are best kept in an outdoor weatherproof hutch. The hutch should have a weatherproof box which lucerne hay can be placed as bedding. In bad weather your rabbit should be placed under cover. DIET Vegetables can also be fed in moderation, your rabbit will enjoy carrots, celery, apples, broccoli and lettuce. Also bread, thistles and fresh grass can be given but remember the Guinea Pig and Rabbit Meal should be the staple diet and the green matter a supplement. A Salt Lick Block hung in the cage will provide minerals in your rabbit’s diet.

    Introduction
The domestic rabbit, Oryctotagus cuniculus , is a descendant of wild rabbits living in western Europe and northern Africa In their natural environment, rabbits are gregarious and reproductively successful. They are completely herbivorous (eat only plants) and most actively forage in the twilight or nighttime hours. Rabbits use their claws to dig and burrow into the ground for shelter and protection. They rarely stand their ground when threatened but instead use their considerable speed and maneuverability to escape harm. Domestic rabbits or wild rabbits kept in captivity, however, can display an amazing degree of aggression when upset or threatened. Domestic rabbits are bred and kept for commercial meat and fur, teaching and research, as indoor and outdoor pets, and for exhibition by rabbit fanciers. Rabbits make excellent pets. They are relatively easy to care for and can be litterbox-trained. Their fastidious nature, unaggressive behavior and quiet manner make them increasingly popular house pets.

How to care for your Rabbits

    About Rabbits
A girl rabbit is called a 'Doe' and a boy rabbit is called a 'Buck'. Girl Rabbits are nicer to each other than boy rabbits, you can usually keep 2 girl rabbits in the same cage, but 2 boy rabbits would just fight. (Kate says "typical"...what does she mean)
    Choosing a Rabbit
Rabbits make good pets, they can live indoors or out. Our rabbits live outside in the garden. Before you buy a rabbit you should be sure you are going to have the time to look after it. Rabbits usually live for between 5 and 8 years. If you are a little person remember that you will find it easier to hold a little rabbit than a big one, it may be worth paying that little bit more and getting a smaller breed.
When you go to buy a rabbit you should make sure that the rabbit is well. We think you should make sure that the rabbit is over 9 weeks old, before this they should still be with their mum. The rabbit should be well and lively. You should check that it has a dry nose, clean teeth and ears, short claws, and a clean and shiny coat. You should not buy a rabbit if it has diarrhoea or a runny nose and sneezes.
    The hutch
You should get or make the biggest hutch you can because rabbits can grow quite big. The roof of the hutch should be sloping so that the rain water will run off the back. There should be a closed in sleeping area and an area with wire mesh over the front so that the rabbit can see out. It is best if it has legs to keep the damp out and it should have a latch on the front to keep it shut.
