Easter pets need lasting care
Letter: Easter pets need lasting care
SABRINA ERNST AND 16 OTHERS Dear editor, With the approach of the Easter holiday, merchants in the Manhattan area are promoting the sale of cute Easter bunnies and chicks to well-meaning parents and their children. While many of these animals may come into homes where they are well cared for, many end up neglected; their novelty and cuteness wear off, and many people simply do not have the time, facilities or adequate information to properly care for these animals. Buying or adopting a pet, whether it be a pony, dog or rabbit, should never become a spontaneous decision. Potential pet owners need to ask themselves several questions before acquiring any animal. Can I afford this pet? This does not only include the purchase price of the animal. Can I afford veterinary care for the animal, such as vaccinations or medical treatment, if the animal becomes ill? Unfortunately, many people do not have information on the husbandry needs of their animals and are often given incorrect information. Many times, this ignorance and misinformation can lead to health repercussions and unfortunately may lead to the animal's death. Can I provide adequate housing for the animal? Rabbits need to have a hutch where they can sleep, feel secure and be protected. Giving them free roam of a house or apartment can lead to problems with curious cats or dogs, and rabbits who are curious themselves may consume objects such as carpet fibers and toxic house plants, which may require medical treatment (refer back to question one). Ducks are simply not meant to be house pets. Adult birds are messy, and even well-meaning owners who keep a duck in the backyard need to worry about protection from roaming dogs and cats and from inclement weather.

    RABBIT CARE
    WHERE FROM

A reliable breeder is your best source. Visit the breeder if possible to see the young rabbit's parents, which is a good way of seeing how big your rabbit will be on maturity. Usually most breeds of rabbits reach maturity at six months of age. WHICH BREED
Domestic rabbits are divided into two classes, Fur and Fancy. For pets, usually the Fancy type rabbits are chosen, as the are smaller and more patterned. CARING FOR YOUR BABY RABBIT
A rabbit can leave the doe (mother) at eight weeks of age. If the rabbit is to be a child's pet, eight years old is a recommended age to be responsible for a pet rabbit. Baby rabbits in particular are very lively, so help will be needed for the child to look after his/her new pet at first. Grooming and handling soon has your pet manageable. Meal times are a good time for this to be done. HOUSING
Hutches made of wood are the most common form of keeping your rabbit warm and dry. They should be weatherproof and at the same time, well ventilated. If the hutch is outside as opposed to in a shed or lean-to, extra weatherproofing is necessary, such as a cover for the front of the hutch after dark and during wet weather. Rabbits can withstand cold, but wet is not for rabbits.

community diaries shop Bringing Home the Easter Bunny Should Your Child Have a Rabbit as a Pet? By Donna Smith With Easter right around the corner, pet stores are stocking up on bunnies for sale. Doesn't everyone at one time or another think about buying a bunny for their children at Easter? Many of these bunnies are bought on impulse, without knowing all the responsibility a rabbit requires. Not too long after Easter, many of these bunnies are neglected or taken to local shelters once the novelty wears off. Before buying that cute, fluffy bunny in the window of the pet store, give it some thought. Do you have the time and patience to devote to a rabbit? And did you know that rabbits and young children are usually not a good combination? The Truth About Rabbits
Melissa Stockton bought a bunny for her 4-year-old last Easter. "We bought a baby bunny, and things were fine for a while," she says. "But when the bunny got a little older, he started to kick when Daniel picked him up. The kicks sometimes resulted in scratches and tears." "Rabbits are ground-loving animals," says Roxanne Snopek, a registered animal health technician and Suite101 guide for Family Pet Care . "They do not particularly like to be picked up." Rabbits are also easily startled, and the energy of an active preschooler can frighten them. "The sudden movements and loud noises of young children make them nervous," she says. "They are physically unsuited to rough handling."

    SUMMER PET CARE TIPS
Heat Stress Hot summers in Davis and other hot places
Any pet can suffer heat stress, dogs, cats, birds, horses, rabbits, etc. but some animals are more prone or susceptible:
    • very young or very old animals
    • short-nosed breeds of cats and dogs
    • overweight animals
    • pets with cardiovascular or respiratory problems
    • heavy coated breeds
    • animals with a history of heat stress
    • so-called arctic breeds of dogs
    • Rabbits cannot tolerate temperatures above 85-90 degrees very well
    [menu]
    Help Prevent Heat Stress
    • Provide plenty of clean, fresh water at all times, change water daily
    • provide adequate shade and/or shelter from the sun and, if pets are kept in a kennel, adequate air circulation
    • avoid exercise during hot weather
    • hot pavement can mean hot or burned paws, avoid walking your dog on hot pavement or roads
    • baby pools filled with cool water can be fun and cooling for most dogs (use the hard plastic pool)
    • fill a gallon milk container with water, freeze, place it in cage or in a cool spot in the yard so rabbit, cat or dog can lay next to it and get cool
    • NEVER leave pets in a parked vehicle!!!!
