If you acquire a rabbit, be prepared to give it as much time and care as you would a dog or cat. Rabbits, if spayed or neutered, have a lifespan of seven to ten years. Spaying and neutering are simple operations that tend to reduce or prevent territorial behavior, spraying by males, moodiness, aggressiveness, digging and chewing. They can also improve litter box habits. Brush your rabbit regularly to avoid fur balls, which they may swallow but cannot regurgitate.

Newsletter Archives happypets.org RABBITS A hunny bunny can be a wonderful addition to your household if properly cared for. They are very mild mannered and enjoy being handled, but please, don’t buy one as an Easter gift. Through my volunteer work at animal shelters I have seen countless rabbits become homeless during the months following Easter because people got them as gifts and didn’t want the responsibility after the thrill of a new pet was over. Nutrition Commercial rabbit pellets are available in most pet stores. Contrary to popular belief, they can not survive on a diet of lettuce and carrots, however, these can be offered as healthy tasty treats and make your rabbit a happypet. You can also treat your rabbit to sunflower seeds (it’s fun to watch them spit the shells out) nuts and fruits, but don’t overdo it. They might come to prefer these items and refuse their regular diet. You may be shocked, one day, to find your rabbit eating it’s own feces. This practice is called coprophagy. While disgusting to humans, coprophagy is a perfectly normal practice for rabbits that helps aid in digestion, and increases nutrient absorption within the body. As with any pet, fresh water should be readily available at all times. Housing Rabbits can allowed free run of the house if they are litter trained, but if your rabbit is to be kept in a cage, it should be housed individually in an enclosure no smaller than 5 square feet, 16 inches high and have smooth flooring. Wire mesh can be hard on the feet.

Dog Cat Bird Rabbit ... Rat Rabbit The 411
Scientific name: Oryctolagus cuniculus
Size: There are more than 60 different types of domestic rabbits. The small breeds are two to six pounds; medium breeds are six to nine pounds; large breeds are nine to 11 pounds; and giant breeds weigh more than 11 pounds....that's a lot of rabbit!
Lifespan: Seven to ten years
Colors: Many people think rabbits and hares are the same....wrong! Although they belong to the same scientific family, hares have longer, stronger legs and bigger ears than rabbits. Rabbits are born without any fur (brrrr!), while hares are born, well...hairy, and with full vision. Rabbits, on the other hand, don't usually open their eyes for their first seven to ten days. Their homes are different, too. Wild rabbits burrow, hopping around in underground towns called warrens, while hares live alone in simple, shallow holes. The most popular breed in the United States is the Dutch rabbit, who weighs about four pounds and usually has a white face with black, blue or brown on his back and headthis is called a saddle. The largest breed is the Flemish Giant. This big boy weighs more than 13 pounds. There's a lot of variety among rabbits. You can have a bunny with a long, thin nose and short, stubby ears, like a Mini-Rex or Netherland dwarf. Then there are rabbits with long, droopy ears and a flat nose, like a German lop. Some are super furry and soft, like the Cashmere breed, while others, such as the Rex or Tan, are sleek and fuzzy.

you ll need to provide your pet with a diet, lots of playtime, and regular veterinary care. Veterinarians specializing in companion rabbits aren t always easy

I. Rabbits: Veterinary Care INDEX Somebunny's just brought home a new rabbit? As a responsible owner, you'll need to provide your pet with a proper diet, lots of playtime, and regular veterinary care. As soon as the newest addition to the family is settled in, we recommend a trip the vet for a thorough examination. Veterinarians specializing in companion rabbits aren't always easy to find, but it's in your bunny's best interest to locate a doctor who regularly treats the species. Ask the members of your local rabbit rescue group or shelter for a referral. And you'll find great information on selecting a veterinarian at the House Rabbit Society's website, www.rabbit.org. This is also an excellent time to purchase a carrier to safely transport your bunny. Check out your pet supply store for a special wire rabbit carrier that includes a litter tray and a small travel-size water bottle. When you bring your rabbit for his first exam, be prepared to provide information on where and when you acquired your pet, what you're feeding him, what his living accommodations are like and anything unusual you've noticed about him. The veterinarian will then conduct a complete physical exam of your pet, from nose to tail. The doctor will pay special attention to your pet's teeth, examining the entire mouth for overgrown or broken teeth and signs of infection, such as abscesses.

http://www.animed.org/rabbits_spaying_neutering.htm

INDEX
First-time rabbit caretakers are often surprised to learn that their new pet must be spayed or neutered. "I don't plan to breed her," they reason, or "Why should I have him altered if he's never going to come into contact with any unspayed females?" The fact is, rabbits who have been spayed or neutered live longer lives, make calmer pets and are less likely to exhibit negative behaviors. So, you've heard that all bunnies are cuddly and mild-mannered? You haven't lived with an unneutered male! Countless intact male rabbits are surrendered to shelters because of negative behaviors such as chewing and digging, as well as aggression-biting, lunging and growling at other rabbits and even humans in the home. Unaltered males also spray urine to mark their territory. Many of these undesirable behaviors disappear once the animal is neutered. Without reproductive urges and the need to fight off competitors, male rabbits are much calmer and more easily litter-trained.

Rabbits as Pets
The Animal Rescue League adopts rabbits to be family pets. Under no circumstances should a rabbit be used for food for other animals; for experimentation or laboratory work; or for any other use other than as a family pet. The ARL strictly enforces this policy under the terms of the adoption contract.

Housing
Provide a roomy cage, six times the size of an adult rabbit. A front opening door is preferable for rabbit to come in an out on her own; top opening cages are nice too in that they allow humans to reach in and out. Both top and front opening door is ideal. Door must be large enough for litter box. Provide toys in cage.
Provide a heavy pellet bowl or clip-on feeder for food and a water bottle or crock for water. If rabbit tends to get wet chin from a water bowl, switch to a bottle. Running Space Outdoors: fenced patio, porch or wire playpen (with floor), daytime only, with supervision. Consumables For digestion, try the following:
