123. Japan Tours
Advice in setting up sightseeing, shopping and cultural tours to Japan which are of special interest to anyone interested in sewing, quilting, art, gardens and architecture. Based in Seattle, Washington, United States.

Home Page Sewing Patterns Dolls Fabrics ... About Us
SABER's TOUR TO JAPAN
Qualification for these Japanese tours began in 1980 when Jerry was assiged to the US Embassy in Japan. He met Carol in a flea market (also called a shrine sale) in 1989 while she was on a tour to Japan. These markets provide opportunities to liberate wonderous treasures including (click on any of the following to see what we have liberated and you can too) TEXTILES DOLLS ANTIQUES OB I, WOMEN'S KIMONO BOY'S DAY BANNERS WEDDING KIMONO CHILDREN'S KIMONO and BASKETS ! Within a short time, they were married. Carol, having already lived for several months in Kyoto, adapted quickly to her new surroundings. We returned to the United States in January 1995. Many requests from personal friends, guests attending Carol's lectures and students in Carol's classes led to our first Japan tour in November 1997. Unfortunately, we are no longer leading these tours, but it is with great pleasure that we announce our association with a well established but small company which offers many trips per year. Also, if you a "guest referral" there is the added bonus (at no cost) of gaining our expertise on a one-to-one basis. This includes a copy of our very helpful TO DO LIST, suggestions on what else you might do during any free time, how to get to various shrine sales, what to buy, how much to pay......all you need to do is let us know you are going. In addition to providing a copy of our very helpful TO DO LIST, we will provide suggestions and recommendations for additional places to visit or special interests during any free time you may have prior to the start of, during or after your scheduled itinerary in Japan. Having lived in Japan for over 14 years and returned frequently (we still do), Carol and I have been to all of the sites frequented by tourists as well as many others which are well off the tourist trail. The nformation we can provide is not only how to get there but when to go or not go for there is nothing more disappointing than arriving at that special place to discover it is closed that day.

Ponderings by Bonnie

TOO FUNNY!! A friend in California sent this pic!
This is truly a "Sign of the Times" :c) March, 2002: It's a WINNER!! I entered "Perkiomen Daydreams" in the Dallas Quilt Celebration held this past weekend and it won 3rd place in the Artisan's pieced category! YAY! There are 10,000 pieces in this postage stamp variation quilt. I love the "perkiomen valley" split 9 patch lay out, and played with that idea for this quilt. Curious as to how this quilt is broken down into units? Here is a break down of one block! Here is a pic of the beginning layout of 144 blocks before sewing together. There are 400 5" 25-patch blocks in this quilt, with each square measuring 1". Here is a pic of the quilt top before quilting.

Quilting patterns from Helen Squire, quilt teacher and author of the Dear Helen books
Welcome!

Dear Helen, Can You Tell Me…? , to the Helen’s Hints column in American Quilter magazine, she has continued to provide quilting advice and quilting designs for today’s quilters in her own unique style.
Historical Helen: See 30 years of photos of Dear Helen.
Helen’s “historical” one hour lectures on quilting are often called “hysterical”! Her informative facts about quiltmaking are presented in a humorous, light-hearted manner meant to entertain, as well as educate, today’s audiences by acknowledging the talents and skills of yesterday’s quilters. Choose from two titles, “ If Quilts Could Talk - Would We Listen? ” or the traditional “ Quilt Appreciation: How Quilting Makes the Quilt From beginner student to professional quilter, everyone wants to know more about quilting patterns! Helen’s quilting classes (and her quilting books) provide students with patterns useful for hand quilting, as well as the continuous line quilting patterns useful for machine quilting, including long arm machine quilting. As an experienced quilt teacher, Helen Squire can custom-plan her classes to the needs and skill level (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) of your individual group, guild, retreat, get-together, and/or quilt show and quilt convention. All day workshops, as well as half-day lectures/demonstrations are available. Choose from among four classes on quilting designs, including the more universal “

African American Quilting Traditions : Many quilts are shown, including a picture of a loom house used by slaves on the Melrose Plantation. Weakness of the site is its perpetuation of stereotypical views of quilting by African Americans Southern Quilting Traditions - On another page of this site, a "Star of Bethlehem" quilt made in the so-called "African-American tradition" is contrasted with one created in the "European-American" tradition. Artifacts We Don't Dig Up : As part of a lesson plan, this site has images of quilts made by: Phyllis, a slave imported from the Congo in 1818; Francis and Evelyn, two slaves belonging to Cynthia Evelyn Bush; "Yellow Bill", a male slave belonging to William Dean of New Orleans; Johanna Davis between 1845 and 1853, she may have been an artisan and not a slave; Hanna, a crazy quilt she began before the Civil War and finished by her daughter, Emma, in 1895. What is a Quilting Machine?
A quilting machine is an industrial sewing machine of special design that shares many features of domestic sewing machines. It also has some unique features such as an extended throat (American quilters call them "Longarms") and unlike it's domestic cousin is fully mobile. The machine rests on a movable platform fitted with wheels that ride along a track running the full length of a long narrow table. This provides "X" axis movement. The machine is also fitted with wheels that ride on a shorter track on the movable platform, at right angles to the main track allowing "Y" axis movement. Handles fitted to the machine allow the operator to move it in any direction in a horizontal plane. The table, up to 4.3 metres (14 ft) long is equipped with a number of full length rollers designed to hold the work in a fixed horizontal position inside the throat of the machine. The table dimensions allow quilting to be done on items ranging from the largest king size bed spreads down to tiny miniatures. The earliest "Longarm" quilting machines date back to at least the 1950's. Today there are several thousand machines located throughout the world, most of them in the U.S.A. where all are currently manufactured. There are about five major manufacturers and several smaller ones. Over 200 machines have found their way to Australia and the number is growing fast.

Tivaevae replaced tapa (bark) cloth, and, to a certain extent, woven mats in traditional ceremonies. Tivaevae have become the most valued treasure in every household."
