America's Quilting History
Facts vs. Myths About America's Quilting Past
As in all topics in history we need to do the best we can to discern between fact and fiction. Myths about quilt history are a part of our culture and many have romantic appeal. We can enjoy the myths but need to remember they are tales sometimes passed through generations. As you explore this site on America's quilting history you will find the truth is often more fascinating than the myth. Quilt historian, Virginia Gunn introduced her article, "From Myth to Maturity: the Evolution of Quilt Scholarship" in a way that says it so well that I am going to quote it here. "Quilting myths are realities of quilt history. Romantic myths have been combined with historical facts as people interpreted America's Quilting past. They continue to be accepted as true even when proven to be inaccurate. Myths survive and thrive because they reflect people's dreams, ideals, and values. They provide images and stories that unite and inspire members of society. Signs of maturity in quilt study, as in other fields of research, involve a willingness to revise past scholarship in light of new knowledge, and an ability to recognize and appreciate myth, without letting them impede interpretations based on accurate and documented facts."
From Uncoverings 1992
MYTH #1 ~ Quilting was a common task in a woman's life in Colonial America.

    AFRICAN AMERICAN QUILTING TRADITIONS
Wahlman, p. 38 Loom house used by slaves on Melrose Plantation Interior of a loom house on Melrose Plantation The textile traditions of African peoples are less thoroughly documented than other aspects of folk art such as music, dance, or speech. However what is known can be traced back to the prominent influences of four civilizations of Central and West Africa: the Mande-speaking peoples (in the modern countries of Guinea, Mali, Senegal, and Burkino Faso); the Yoruba and Fon peoples (in the Republic of Benin and Nigeria); the Ejagham peoples (in Nigeria and Cameroons); and the Kongo peoples (in Zaire and Angola). Wahlman, p. 21 As slaves, and also their textiles, were traded heavily throughout the Caribbean, Central America, and the Southern United States, the traditions of each distinct region became intermixed. Thus by the time that early African American quilting became a tradition in and of itself, it was already a combination of textile traditions. The segments that follow are an overview of the general themes and patterns of quilting that have been influenced by African aesthetic, religious, and cultural traditions.

Enjoy the 'Spanish Experience' at 'La Drova'
Nestled in the mountains outside Barx, La Drova offers magnificent views, clean air and a calm haven away from the stresses of everyday life. After your relaxing scheduled flight from Gatwick, Sally will collect you for the hours transfer from the sophisticated city of Valencia through the orange groves to arrive at the Spanish Experience in time for dinner. Spanish experience is an impressive residence where quilting is the ‘order of the day’. The workshops will begin after breakfast at approximately 10am and will run, with the exception of a lunch break, until 4pm. Should you wish to continue your quilting or any other techniques the facilities are at your disposal for the duration of your stay. However, you may prefer to just relax in the evening and enjoy the company of others who share this same interest with you. Wednesday afternoon and all day Saturday have been specifically left free should you wish to make visits to places of interest or just enjoy the warmth of the sun around the private pool. What we offer: The Spanish Experience can facilitate 8 people plus a lecturer, which enables Sally to maintain a friendly atmosphere together with the obvious advantage of a 1 to 8 lecture/student ratio.
