  • Trip Report from Amherst/Quebec - Sun, 21 Jan 2001 Hi Gord,
Here is a report for your sight if you are interested. It only covers 48 hours and two sites, so maybe not enough information to post. Good birding, Peter - Amherst Island, Ontario and Quebec 13 15 January 2001 Peter G. Saenger and Kevin F. Crilley 13 January
Kevin had to work during the day on the 13th and I lead a birding trip for the Lehigh Valley Audubon Society, so we did not leave until 18:45 (9,345). Crossed the New York State border at 20:55 (9,476). The weather deteriorated as we headed north and in the Watertown, NY area it started to sleet heavily and the temperature dropped to 33 degrees. This was one of those times were the outside temperature reading on the Jeep was very useful and watched. The road crews were out in force and the driving was fine, though we kept the speed down. We later found out the roads had been very bad a few hours earlier. Canadian Border at 00:15. The Duty-Free Shop was closed; meaning no supplies or money exchange. At the hotel, The Country Squire in Gananoque at 00:45. The room was OK, but not nearly a nice as the previous two visits- must remember to ask for the rooms on the lower east-side and not in the "pink" section. We had trouble sleeping. Finally turning the lights out at 02:45 and slept until 05:00.

    83. New Study Peers Behind The Fortified Walls Of Quebec City At The Americas Free T
Released by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
    http://www.policyalternatives.ca/whatsnew/fortresspr.html
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 29, 2001 New study peers behind the fortified walls of Quebec City at the Americas free trade negotiations (FTAA)
(Ottawa)The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives released a new report today that sheds light on the Free Trade Area of the Americas. In the absence of a public draft FTAA text, "Inside the Fortress: What's going on at the FTAA negotiations" provides a comprehensive road-map to the issues that are on the table at the Quebec City Summit of the Americas. "This report compiles information on the negotiations from a wide variety of sources so that citizens can know what is happening behind closed doors," says report author Marc Lee. "The secrecy surrounding the FTAA draft text and the heavy fortification of the Quebec Summit contradicts claims by leaders and trade ministers in support of democracy." The report provides background information on the progress to date for an FTAA and its future prospects. It finds that an FTAA deal is by no means a sure thing, due to a variety of internal conflicts among negotiating countries, plus growing opposition from a diverse array of concerned groups across the hemisphere. Overall, the report finds that Canada has little to gain from an FTAA. Canada's trade with Latin America is miniscule, representing well under 1% of Canadian exports, compared to 86% with the United States. Yet, the report notes that Canada has much to lose from a completed deal, and that the Canadian government has failed to take positions in areas of public importance.

Poll: Liberals could win Quebec election
Story Tools MONTREAL (Reuters) The pro-Canada Quebec Liberals could win Monday's provincial election thanks to a surge in support from French-speaking voters, according to an opinion poll released Friday. The CROP poll for La Presse, Le Soleil and the Globe and Mail newspapers put support for the Liberals at 38 percent, compared with 30 percent for the separatist Parti Quebecois, which is seeking to win a third straight term in office. The conservative Action Deomocratique trails a distant third, with 15 percent support. It is the second survey within 24 hours pointing to a big shift in public opinion in Canada's mainly French-speaking province in favor of the Liberals. The results show support for the Liberals up 8 percentage point from a mid-campaign CROP poll. Backing for the Parti Quebecois is down 6 points. "Should these numbers hold until the election, the Liberals will certainly form the next government," CROP Vice-President Claude Gauthier told the Globe and Mail. "We might even be witnessing a wave of support for the Liberals that could go up as high as 50 percent of the vote." If opionions of undecided voters and those who declined to give an opinion were redistributed based on whether they backed or opposed sovereignty, support for the Liberals rose to 46 percent, compared to 33 percent for the Parti Quebecois.

    WELCOME TO MY CANADA TRIP
This section of my web page deals with my 1999 trip to Canada (with a couple of days in New England thrown in for good measure).  Why did I go to Canada?  Well, as with most things in my life, that's a long story.
Shortly after I arrived back from England in 1998, my friends with whom I'd visit were reassigned back to the States.  While their reassignment was not unexpected, it was still a sad occasion for all of us.  We'd had such fun touring Great Britain with them that the thought of going back there without them just didn't seem right.
While Great Britain was off the list of places to visit, the impressions I had gathered on my trips there had a strong influence over where I wanted to go in 1999.  I was looking to go to somewhere that had a European flavor to the spot.  Three potential candidates emerged.  The first was the Portugal/Spain/France trip that I'd considered in 1998.  However, this option quickly disappeared under the same logistic issues that had scuttled it the year before.
The final option was to go to Montreal and Quebec.  I've been wanting to visit these places for some time; but, have always had other options to explore.  This time, though, it seemed like the perfect place to visit.  The French quality of Quebec would satisfy the "European flavor" criteria.  Plus, the American dollar was very strong against the Canadian dollar, meaning the trip would be relatively cheap.  Finally, the trip would afford me the chance to see ice hockey, which has become a new passion of mine.  As I said before, it seemed like a perfect fit.  Once I had decided, I got tickets for Tom Marihart (my usual traveling companion) and myself.  After a bit of schedule adjusting, we were ready to go.

Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... preconized him Bishop of Arath in partibus infidelium Sioux near Turtle Mountain, North Dakota . After a siege of two days (13 and 14 July), the assailants spied the missionary in surplice and stole, and withdrew, convinced that the Great Spirit protected the half-breeds. In 1856 he returned to Canada, where he taught mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy at Nicolet College, of which he was appointed president in 1859. In 1866 Bishop Cook of Three Rivers chose him for coadjutor, and in 1870, while at the Vatican Council, Bishop Lafleche succeeded to the vacant see. He was no less an able administrator than an eloquent orator. Besides his weekly sermons in his cathedral, where he often treated the great social and politico-religious questions of the day, his voice was heard on many important occasions. A dauntless exponent of Catholic truth and an ardent Ultramontane, his utterances were not always acceptable to the group of politicians who inclined towards Liberalism. When, in 1885, contrary to his wish, his diocese was divided, he bowed submissively to the decree of the Holy See BENOIT, Vie de Mgr. Tachi (Montreal, 1904); MORICE, Dictionnaire historigue des Canadiens de l'Ouest (Quebec, 1908); DESAULNIERS, Genealogie des familles Richer de la Fleche et Hamelin (Montreal, 1909).

Images of protesters clashing with police in Quebec City, Canada ON THE NEWS John King: Protests at Summit of the Americas QUEBEC CITY, Canada Police on Saturday turned water cannon on demonstrators beyond a fence separating them from officials attending the Summit of the Americas. Demonstrators waved at police across the barricade, presenting themselves as targets for the water cannon. Riot police are bracing for more violence as demonstrators plan a mass rally to protest trade globalization. U.S. President George W. Bush, making his first appearance at the summit, said Saturday he intended to listen to the voices "inside this hall and those outside this hall who want to join us in constructive dialogue" about expanded trade. Clashes broke out on Friday as anti-globalization protesters took over several streets, tore down a concrete barrier as riot police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to push them back.
