. Soon after, French coureurs de bois arrived, eager to trade in precious furs.
Colonization
In 1642 Paul Chomedey, Sieur de Maisonneuve, landed with a group of French colonists at what is now mission named Ville Marie. From 1660 to 1713 the settlement of New France accelerated as France established colonies in Acadia (now Nova Scotia and New Brunswick) and along the shores of the St. Lawrence. By the late 18th century, Ville Marie had grown from a trading post into the thriving port of During the French and English War, the armies of British Major General James Wolfe attacked Québec City on September 13, 1759 and defeated the French troops of Commander Louis Joseph de Montcalm. This Battle of the Plains of Abraham, in which both generals lost their lives, altered the destiny of New France. Four years later, under the Treaty of Paris, the King of France granted to "His Royal Majesty, the sole ownership of Canada and all its dependencies." This transfer of power and territory from France to England sparked a flood of new colonists from England, Ireland and Scotland. cities , and the process of urbanization accelerated. By 1830, Montréal - the "Paris of the North"- had become Canada's major industrial center, welcoming waves of European immigrants fleeing war and misery in their homelands.

How to kill Quebec separatism
WILLIAM JOHNSON
It's time to give Quebec separatism the . It can be done. What's needed is the nerve, the vision, the political will. The separatist leaders are now in disarray. Last week's election results in Quebec were the culmination of a bad year for separatism. And yesterday, a personal blow landed on Lucien Bouchard: The editor of the closest thing to a separatist house organ, Michel Venne of Le Devoir, questioned the Premier's commitment to the sacred cause. "If Mr. Bouchard no longer believes in sovereignty, let him say so. . . . Let others take up the cause. As long as he does not commit his government to a process [preparing for sovereignty], no one will believe any more in his incantations. His calls to mobilize will remain a dead letter. And his speeches will only bore us." The RIQ claims not to oppose the PQ, but to help by whipping up public support for secession. But it proposes dropping the PQ's commitment to offering a partnership with Canada in the aftermath of secession. This choice of full independence embarrasses the PQ, whose leaders notably Mr. Bouchard believe that only sovereignty accompanied by a partnership offer can ever be saleable. True believers are convinced that secession can be won by talking it up constantly, by harnessing the government's powers to its promotion, and by funding committed non-governmental groups. But that assumption is naive, and an attempt to implement it could backfire.

Canada's largest province is unlike the rest of Canada and North America. Not only that the majority of the population is French, but the unique culture, architecture, music, food, and religion make a visit a truly experience for itself. Its modern cities and charming rural towns offer a wealth of diversity. 'Kebec' - meaning 'where the river narrows' - is an Algonkian Indian word.
Montréal, the province's largest city, where English is still widely used, is noted for its nightlife, food and museums. After Toronto, ON, Montréal is Canada's second largest city.
English and French culture is somehow mixed and results in an unique blend. It's a friendly and romantic place where couples kiss on the street and strangers talk to each other. The Montréal Museum of Fine Arts and the Notre Dame Basilica are some of the must-see if you visit Montréal. Québec City shouldn't be missed out, if you visit the province. It is the heart of French Canada, with a rich history, culture and beauty. Its European appearance and atmosphere and the charm of an old-world city make a visit to an unique experience nowhere else found in North America. The entire old section of town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don't miss the historic battlements on the Plains of Abraham, which is one of the most important historic places in French and British history.
Québec in Figures
The country's largest province covers an area of 1,540,680 sq. km and is in many ways a country for its own. It is twice the size of Texas and seven times the size of the United Kingdom. It stretches approx. 2,000 km from north to south, and 1,500 km from east to west. It extends from the fertile St. Lawrence Lowlands bordering four US states (New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine), to the vast expanse of Baffin Island and the northern boreal seas. Québec borders Ontario on the west and New Brunswick on the east.

Liberals take slight lead in Quebec campaign
Story Tools QUEBEC CITY, April 6 (Reuters) The Quebec Liberal Party under Jean Charest is widening its lead in the provincial election race, the latest polls say, but it still may not be enough to unseat the Parti Quebecois and its separatist agenda. Entering the final stages of the campaign for the April 14 vote, Charest, 44, was buoyed by his performance in last Monday's leaders debate and by surveys showing him ahead of Premier Bernard Landry, 66, and the Parti Quebecois. The Liberals had been running neck and neck with the Parti Quebecois, which is looking to form a third consecutive government in the French-speaking province of 7.3 million. But polls taken after the televised debate show the Liberals rising 3 points to hold 43 percent of voter support and the Parti Quebecois down a point at 39 percent. The right-of-centre Action Democratique, led by 32-year-old Mario Dumont is a distant third at 17 percent, but could divide the popular vote in favor of the Liberals. "I feel that we have been able to connect with the people after the debate. Mr. Landry is in panic mode and behaving like the leader of the opposition," Charest told reporters this week.

passenger train schedule available at an unaffiliated web site. The car carrying service, by contrast, is thoroughly undocumented. It apparently operates only twice a week in the summer and, for example, may necessitate your car spending the weekend locked up in the railyards in Sept Îles.
Logistics, aside, however, the ride was great, not least because of an ancient but thorougly serviceable Pullman Standard dome car at the rear of the train. The pictures below speak for themselves; the scenery and views are, in my opinion, the match of the Alaska railroad. Except for the fact that very few rail buffs seem to be aware that this route exists, much less that there is scheduled passenger service available! Around the Railroad Station in Labrador City
They actually sell tickets at this station, unlike the station in Sept Îles where you are directed to a nearby (?) travel agent for the purchase of transportation. The car carrier can be seen in one of the pictures. I was told there are no height restrictions, but don't expect to be able to put your car on the train if you've got a canoe (or other moveable object) strapped onto your roof.
Heading South Through Labrador and Quebec
The countryside becomes more dramatic as we head south. The iron ore freight on the route are the reason for the railroad's existence; indeed it's the mining company that owns and operates the railroad.

Laval University of Quebec
The University of Laval was founded in 1852 by the Seminary of Quebec; the royal charter granted to it by Queen Victoria was signed at Westminster, 8 December, 1852. By the Bull "Inter varias sollicitudines", 15 April, 1876, Pius IX Conformably to a decision of the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda, dated 1 February, 1876, an extension of the faculties of the university was made in favour of Montreal, the archbishop of which was named vice-chancellor of the university. The decree "Jamdudum" of 2 February 1889, modified in some respects the constitution of the Montreal branch of the university. The direction of this branch is now confided to a vice-rector proposed to the university council of Quebec by the bishops of the ecclesiastical Province of Montreal. The branch has thus become nearly independent of the mother university. numismatic museum, over eleven thousand coins and medals; the library nearly one hundred and fifty thousand volumes. QUEBEC BRIDGE FAILURE
by John H. Lienhard
Click here for audio of Episode 220. Today, a bridge collapses, and we ask why. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. I' m looking at two photographs, both taken in late August, 1907. In one, a great cantilever structure extends almost 900 feet from its pier half a huge bridge over the St. Lawrence River 40 million pounds of structural steel reaching toward Quebec. The second photograph is not so pretty. It shows 40 million pounds of what looks like wet spaghetti, splashed across the ground, leading away from the pier and off into the water. For eight years the Quebec bridge project had been under the direction of an American engineer. He was Theodore Cooper, the biggest name in bridge building. Cooper had never produced a true superlative, and his first move was to extend the span from 1600 to 1800 feet. That got the piers out of the water and on to dry land. But it also made this the largest cantilever span ever attempted. The contract was let to the Phoenix Bridge Company. And soon many factors were gnawing at the design's integrity. The Company lacked funds for preliminary design and testing. Cooper's health was poor, and he limited his travel to the site. But maybe the largest problem was that he was just too highly regarded.
