About this site
Statement of Mission and Goals:
My perspective is that of an academic writer. It is not my purpose to entertain the visitors at the site, although I hope that navigating through it will be pleasant enough. It is my hope that they will find serious information on a wide variety of subjects. Ideally, I would wish to make the site "complete", that is that much of the pertinent information regarding important issues be found right at the site. It is with this view in mind that the site was constructed. For most subjects that are tackled, there are (or will be) one or more texts written by the author and placed in the Readings category. These texts wish to impart knowledge, but especially to provide an interpretive framework on a significant question. In the category of readings are also placed a number of historiographical essays that seek to analyse the debates between historians on an important issue, or to introduce a specific historian to the readers. The reader should be made to grasp that debate is an inherent part of the study of history and that different people provide different answers to the same question. My objective is to try to explain why that is so, giving support, when necessary, to the views that seem to most accord with the facts as they are known presently. As well, the interpretive section is supplemented by a subdivision on

Marcel Pepin, one of three labour leaders imprisoned by former premier Robert Bourassa during a public sector strike in 1972, has died. He was president of the Confederation of National Trade Unions from 1965 to 1976, the second-largest labour federation in Quebec. He was instrumental in the movement during the Quiet Revolution, which modernized Quebec and moved it away from control by the Roman Catholic Church.

Samuel de Champlain: The Foundation of Quebec, 1608
HAVING returned to France after a stay of three years in New France, I proceeded to Sieur de Monts, and related to him the principal events of which I had been a witness since his departure, and gave him the map and plan of the most remarkable coasts and harbors there. Some time afterward Sieur de Monts determined to continue his undertaking, and complete the exploration of the interior along the great river St. Lawrence, where I had been by order of the late King Henry the Great in the year 1603, for a distance of some hundred and eighty leagues, commencing in latitude 48 E 40', that is, at Gaspé, at the entrance of the river, as far as the great fall, which is in latitude 45 E and some minutes, where our exploration ended, and where boats could not pass as we then thought, since we had not made a careful examination of it as we have since done. Now, after Sieur de Monts had conferred with me several times in regard to his purposes concerning the exploration, he resolved to continue so noble and meritorious an undertaking, notwithstanding the hardships and labors of the past. He honored me with his lieutenancy for the voyage; and, in order to carry out his purpose, he had two vessels equipped, one commanded by Pont Gravé, who was commissioned to trade with the savages of the country and bring back the vessels, while I was to winter in the country.

Quebec City offers indisputable proof that
North America has a secular history
and an ancestral culture.
Three centuries of colonial conquests, a French, English and finally Quebec regime, are at the origins of the unusual architectural aspect of Quebec City.
The juxtaposition of French, English, North-American, modern and secular constructions in the same urban scenery, gives the city a very interesting anachronic character, and is at the very least unexpected... you either like it or don't like, but you can't remain indifferent...
