    Muslims in Quebec
Part III: Spiritual geography Tuesday, March 30, 2004 @02:00AM by Simon Latendress This is the third of a four-part series on Muslims in Quebec. It is an attempt to giving insight into the ways in which Muslims deal with sharing private and public space in the practice of their religion. As my interviewee, "Sana," in last week's article pointed out, it can be difficult at times to follow certain Islamic principles or practices within shared public spaces in Quebec. This week's interview shows that the "geographic" nature of the issue also holds much importance and that Islam cannot exist in a vacuum or be dissociated from strong cultural ties. I had the fortune to finally meet with professor Perwaiz Hayat. Having emmigrated to Canada from Pakistan a number of years ago, Hayat teaches in the religion department at Concordia. While being primarily focused on religion in advancing my questions, his answers opened the discussion to a wider spectrum.

The small farms of the lowlands yield dairy products, sugar beets, and tobacco. Quebec is second to Ontario among the Canadian provinces in industrial production. Its main manufactures include refined petroleum, food products, beverages, motor vehicles, aircraft, clothing, furniture, iron and steel, chemicals, and metal and paper products. The fur and fishing trades are still important in Quebec. The service sector has grown significantly since 1970. Although many anglophone businesses have abandoned the Montreal area since the 1960s in response to separatist agitation and provincial laws requiring the nearly exclusive use of French, Quebec continues to be a center of international commerce. Montreal and Quebec city are both tourist magnets. Sections in this article:

Matagami Highest Tides A long-simmering feud between Arctic Quebec and the Maritimes over who has the world's highest ocean tides has been settled by federal scientists, but neither side is happy with the outcome. Authorities at the Canadian Hydrographic Service, the agency responsible for mapping domestic waterways, have declared a tie between the famous tides of the Bay of Fundy and those of Ungava Bay on the northern coast of Quebec. ... the world's largest tides, "with a range from low to high tide that can exceed 16 metres at the head of the bay," has been wiped out after scientists determined it was in a tidal tie with Leaf Basin in the southwest corner of Ungava Bay. They say the highest tides in Leaf Basin are 16.8 metres. The latest high tide data from Burntcoat Head, N.S., on the shore of the Minas Basin shows 17-metre tides.

North America’s only walled city has long outgrown its ramparts, spilling across surrounding countryside. The hub of Quebecois life today—the street known as the Grande Allée, home of Quebec Province’s parliament—lies outside the old Upper Town. But within the old city walls a quaint, European brand of enchantment awaits: Bounded by gray stone houses and churches, small streets twist in the shadow of the iconic, cliffside Château Frontenac hotel, as do the mighty St. Lawrence River and the walkways of Lower Town, many precipitous feet below. Photo: The majestic Chateau Frontenac, a world-class hotel, towers above old Quebec.
